Hi All, I normally dont get this excited but I just tested a new version plugin converter. It will take your Truespace 7.6 ANIMATED characters and export them beautifully in to MotionBuilder, Cinema 4d, Carrara, Max, Maya, XSI and maybe other programs. I have been so disappointed in all the DAE, FBX and other exporters the last few years. I just exported the default Dexter Zye character with his animation and it comes in perfect. Looks and animates just like in Truespace Workspace. This free converter is for owners of many Autodesk products like Maya, Max, MotionBuilder, Softimage (now owned by Autodesk) etc.

Here is the workflow.

1. If you own an Autodesk product you can download the free newest autodesk FBX CONVERTER program from here ....

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=10775855

(it is near the bottom of the page)

this is the newest 2010 fbx converter version as older versions did not work right with Truespace.

2. Save your Truespace 7.6 WORKSPACE side characters with animations as a DAE file.

3. Drag and drop that file from your windows folder in to the FBX Converter and then save as an FBX file. Works great.

4. Import easily in to MotionBuilder, Carrara, Cinema 4d, Max, Maya, XSI, etc with all animation and textures.

Hope that is of interest to some of you .... :jumpy:

If you own an Autodesk product ...

This means Max or Maya. Veery expensive 3D apps. High end sector. With fully working tools. Question, why should somebody who has Max or Maya play around with trueSpace at all?

There is a much cheaper alternative. Ultimate Unwrap 3D. Reads the trueSpace Collada, and converts just fine to FBX.

Thats true. But there are many people who have old versions of one of the Autodesk products (or very cheap student versions) and love using Truespace with them. So ULTIMATE UNWRAP READS Truespace characters WITH animations and exports that perfectly? Wish I would of known that. I assumed it did not do the animations too. The autodesk converter really works well.

Hi Again, As I mentioned at the beginning of this thread that the free Autodesk FBX CONVERTER plugin works instantly and PERFECT with Truespace 7.6. No Dae dropped holes or screwy animation. I was thinking of ordering Ultimate Unwrap (just to have since it is so cheap) as just mentioned by the previous post but Iam reading in blogs and even some posts in this forum about some problems with ultimage unwrap conversions. Just wondering.

Couple posts I read ...

Just a heads up. The new ultimate unwrap 3d fbx plugin released on june 1 will destroy your mesh! do not upgrade. I use this plugin to get collada animations from truespace to other apps. Now I can't I did not back up the old one, and they do not have the old one on their site anymore.

......

Yes it exports fbx. I just tried going into maya ple with it and it went in. The interpolation of the animation was screwy, but you can probably fix that, i just dont understand maya. The fbx crashed max 8. I haven't tried messing with all the settings yet. What app do you want to get fbx into?

Not sure if the UU3D troubles are fixed, but here it works as thought. My mesh arrives correct oriented and textured including animation :)

Have tried the Autodesk FBX exporter now. Hey, it reads and converts the trueSpace Collada now. That's great news. Previous Version of the Autodesk FBX Converter crashed at it :)

Unfortunately the textures gets lost when i import it into MED, and my character is twisted away too. But at least the animation arrives intact :)

What I really love about the newest free motionbuilder converter is my workflow between Truespace 7.6 and MotionBuilder. Here is my workflow..

1. MotionBuilder has a terrible skinning tool and its not very good at placing bones one by one and building a skeleton in a mesh (thats not what it is for). So I import an object character model in to Truespace 7.6 via the Model side using LUUV plugin. I switch over to workspace. Add the bones and skinning (so EXTREMELY fast in Truespace) in workspace (I name bones so MB will accept it for characterization).

2. Then I export that via DAE and using the newest autodesk fbx converter I import that in to MB. Then using almost instant character charactizing in MB I have the most incredible IK/FK HUMAN IK (human IK is where your characters can react instantly with other characters or objects... kind of like Endorphin software) rigged model there is.

So for me Truespace and MB are a good team.:jumpy:

Question, why should somebody who has Max or Maya play around with trueSpace at all?I can think of a few reasons but I wonder what other TS users think. In any case actualy working FBX converter seems like a no brainer benefit for TS users.

Definitely a benefit :)

I needed a second look to find out that there is a standalone FBX converter too, means there is no need to own a Autodesk product. And i needed to download to find out that it reads Collada, which is not mentioned. But it doesn't work proper for me yet. As told, the textures gets lost, and the orientation is wrong. Hm, as long as there is a way to reapply the textures no big problem, the UV seems to be intact. But it can become complicated with a multitextured mesh ...
