Picked up a brand new magazine today called 3D Artist. It looks like it is from the same people who do the fantasy artist magazine but it is all 3D based.

http://www.3dartistonline.com/

To be honest, this is excellent, full of high quality images and tutorials with no real 'bias' like 3D Worold does each month. There is a bit of product, character, landscape in here and plenty of screen grabs and wireframes.

It reminds me of the old Computer Arts 3D specials but feels very inviting and varied. Frankly, the artwork is better than 3D World and there is a whole section on industry output and student work. I am really enjoying reading this..but the best thing is.....

Carrara 6.2 Pro.

No time limits, no watermarks or restrictions. The full software that I paid for last year. And, as an owner of 6.2 Pro, you can get a cheap upgrade to Carrara 7 Pro.

What a bargain. Add to this, UK subscribers can get the next 3 issues for just £1 each and there is a sub offer for US residents.

If they can keep up this standard each month then I will be cancelling my 3D World subscription!!

I really like Carrara Pro products.

I have 7Pro myself and it's well worth it to have it in one's tool box.

It has 3D painting now and a UV implementation that unwraps with seams and pins.

One of the advantages of Carrara is the ability to add shaders/textures on objects by assigning polygons names. Makes for easy material management.

The spline room is quite handy as well.

Glad to see Daz pushing their product out to try out and use.

hehe yeah Really Steinie. Extensive testing will be needed on this one.

Odd; I recall seeing a magazine with the same name. It definitely had the word Artist in the title, but it is/was dedicated to Lightwave. I thought it was called 3D Artist. Maybe it was CG Artist. I've seen it at Borders and Barnes and Noble here in the states.

Pretty sure I could donate my model for the purposes of testing...

As for the mag, it seems to be UK based even though a lot of the artists are in the US and it is issue 1 so I doubt it is in the US yet. Lady in the shop said they were flying out of the door and I got the second to last copy.

I guess the Carrara 6.2 Pro was the clincher here!

I think you have to purchase the magazine to get the girl model :D.

3D Artist, I think the LW version is defunct, though it did turn to a general magazine for a while. This one looks pretty interesting. The website is still pretty new (forums) not too many topics yet.

Some of the car models/renders are pretty slick, I feel like modeling a 1952 F500 Ferrari now.

Thanks for the heads up.

Well, I just subscribed. Can't argue at £1 an issue for the next three....and if I continue each issue will be around half the £6 cover price.

This is such a good read that I have my doubts they can keep it up every month. I do feel that 3D World really lost their edge over the years so let's see how these guys go.

Next issue is due in less than 2 weeks and, as a subscriber, I should get it earlier so I will keep you updated....:D

:)Thank you for sharing this news! already bought the magazine and I'm anxiously to receive it here at home ... You can tell when you leave the second edition of this magazine with all its contents?

A hug from Brazil here!

If I am right in thinking that you mean 'when you get the second issue can you let me know the contents'...then no problem, I run a regular roundup of 3D World magazine contents each month so I am happy to do the same for this mag.

It is of no benefit to me but I know some of you guys have to wait a long time for an issue and if the contents are not so good, then you might be disappointed so I am glad to let you know in advance.

Next issue of 3D Artist is out on 23rd of April (but my copy may be late as I just subscribed).

3D World's next issue is a complete makeover apparently and comes with Realsoft 3D version 5. It is due to subscribers in the last week of April so around the same time as 3D Artist.

Problem with 3D World is it does seem to focus on high end software recently whereas 3D Artist has a big feature this month on blender and covers a wide range of software.

Maybe I will get both, I have been collecting 3D World since issue 1 and this new mag could run out of steam...we shall see!

Thanks for the heads-up splinters. Looks worth a read.

I spent a couple of hours scouring the city's newsgents this afternoon but no luck :( Seems to be a bit popular... even went to WHSmiths, who have *everything* :D

Anyway, just realised I could buy it online so now I'm happy :)

Thanks for pointing this one out Splinters. Like Blakeo, I spent quite a few hours looking all over Dundee for this mag on Friday but no joy. I have now ordered it on-line. BTW, can't wait to read your impressions of the new look 3D World, or should that be 3D (Max) World.

Doncaster is hardly a design mecca but even there the shop assisstant said my issue was the 5th or 6th she had sold in the last hour so it is flying off the shelves. Must be the freebie on the cover, or the fact that it is much more colourful and inviting than 3D World; doesn't seem to have a bias towards one program either....

Try the subscription; £3 for 3 issues is great and you can cancel anytime.

I think £6 is a fair price for a good read like this and it would also be an absolute bargain for the software. Win-win situation really...:D

Did you enjoy the mag contents jayr?

Just installing the software now :D

The mag is pretty good. The work in the galleries is impressive (The morgan freeman one is stunning) the tutorials are good and it was nice to see an article on Blender in there with the usual suspects (3dmax, maya and the like).

Think i'll be keeping an eye on this mag, it's nice to have an alternative to 3D world for pure 3d stuff.

managed to snap the last copy in the WHsmiths around the corner from my office this lunchtime and look forwadr to having a proper look later.

Haven't bought 3dworld for a long time as I can't really afford a regular magazine anymore; always enjoyed the Gallery section best anyway as they don't seem to give much useful stuff away any more, and as already said the focus seems to be higher-end. Will be interesting to see what the revamp brings anh how this new mag compares after a few issues...

thanks for the heads-up Splinters - you realise we're all going to be clamouring for some mini-tuts on Carrera now of course.... :D

Just as a follow up, now I've had a chance for a longer look at the mag, I must say I like it a lot, even though most of it is still to 'high-end' for a mere hobbyist like me to be able to implement - most of the tutorials were done with Maya, Max, ZBrush and the like which means we can't easily follow all the steps - but there's some really good inspiration material if nothing else!

Also found the amount of photosphop/compositing used very interesting...

Will be interesting to see what the next mag is like - I can't justify a subscription until I know about my job situation (company is set to make redundancies in a few weeks) so will look at the next edition on the shelf before seeing if I can negotiate that...

Finally got mine through the post today. Well worth the wait though. As the next issue is out next week, I will wait to see what that one is like before subscribing.

Great to see your work riding high in their gallery listing Splinters.

And with regards to your post there about the ReBoot art book - yep, got mine last November. Sounds like you got a really great deal. I payed a lot more and delivery took about 4 weeks. Dyson XP (the guy on script duty for the my ReBoot animation project) also purchased a copy and he had to wait several months for his to arrive.

Just re-read this mag and I am still blown away by the artwork. The Heath Ledger/Batman image is superb as is the Morgan Freeman and that replacement limb piece is very impressive. I have to say that it wipes the floor with the recent standard of 3D World. Let's see what the revamp brings eh? Due any day now.

Issue 2 arrived today and, dare I say it, is better than issue 1. The cover is a nice touch and reminds me of a character from tron; it is a wireframe with a real face superimposed on it and the print is raised to you can actually feel the wires...cool!

Just Vue 7 pioneer as a 'freebie' but it does have $100 worth of content exclusive to it. Some models, textures, videos etc.

One thing suprised me; at least three of the gallery images have been in recent issues of 3D World but the quality is superb again this month.

Plenty of interesting content laid out in an easy to read format.

Well worth a read and made all the more sweet because I got it before it hits the shops for a measly £1...:D

Thanks for the update - do you know when it hits the shops? I looked yesterday but didn't find it yet...

I'm not up on the diferent versions of Vue - what's the 'Pioneeer' version in the scheme of things? And out of interest, how do you rate it against the revamped 3D World? I definitely can't afford both regulalrly, but was very impressed with this new mag...

It hits the shops today (29th).

AS for comparisons, 3D World feels very technical and academic this issue while 3D artist feels more tutorial based and friendly. Hard to say really as I get a good price as a subscriber to 3D world and this issue of 3D Artist was only £1....so I don't need to decide between them.

Fair to say though that they do compliment each other...:D

I ordered a copy of issue 1 online and it was posted yesterday so I'm waiting patiently. I don't think I'll be subscribing soon though as the cost is a little high and I just renewed my 3D world sub just over a month ago. There are no shops stocking the magazine in galway as far as I know but I may have just been too late for no. 1.

Picked up 3D Artist yesterday and was suprised to see a "workSpace" section. (unrelated). This magazine is packed with quality images. I don't know how they will keep up this quality but they are off to a good start.
