I found this printer that lets you print your models in 3D! It builds models from stacks of polymers. You can even print the printer (except for some electronic boards) so that it starts to look like Marcel's robot self assembly.

It must be fun to design a model and have it made in real 3D. There are some very instructive videos on their site.

Yes. Very cool.

This technology was used to build the models for the movie Coraline (terrific film, btw).

I use TS for industry. With the conversion pack i can do a stl file for laser stereolithography (there is several technologies).

Only the first image in color is from me (made in real directly from TS file). The other images are to show the possibility on other domain (industry, cinema, medical, artist...)

Thanks for sharing the link; Lots of stuff 'is fun', but reality has a habit of taking the fun out of life...

The reprap printer is about 500 euro, not something to buy just for fun, but there are shops that you can send your model to and they will print it, starting at about 6 euro for a simple model.

Of course, life would not be complete if one didn't have a 3D scanner to go with their 3D printers.

You know, to carry on the tradition of the photocopy machines, where users flashed their derrieres and other (cough) appendages in offices both public and private.

you can have a funny real life. 3d stuff are not there to escape reality but to embellish. that's good use. I find it dangerous to give up in a world entirely virtual. When these 3d print technicals will inexpensive, many artists will use them for fun. :)

There are indeed online stores you can send your 3D model to, and get back a solid 3D printed version. You can even do it with your World of Warcraft character :)

3D printing is a great thing. We have several users who have been using it for years, from medical uses, to forensics, to sculptures. Just read an interesting article thanks to Twitter about using 3D printers to make a copy of the shape of a bone, only that shape is full of small holes so that it acts as a framework to regrow real bone.

So looks like 3D printing will continue to find many practical uses over time, letting us achieve more and more!

HTH!
