You should see Tom on that fashion runway! Whoohoo! Talk about your sex appeal, he drives those women wild!
Talk about your modeling!
Oh, and Tom has a Website where he sells his 3D models. :D |

Hahahahha oh my. Just the thought of modeling on the runway... the sheer horror of it! And that's even for me!
Ah too funny, that one really does have me laughing out loud!
Anyway, the website is safe, no such imagery on it, just renders. All quite old, as indeed I have less time to create things for fun and artistic reasons than I used to have, a peculiar side effect of working for the company that makes the software I modeled with :)
I do have a few half finished things. I will try to share them sometime - I'll give myself just a wee while to see if I get them any further along, but if not I'll just share what I have.
And now to try and blank my mind of unpleasant catwalk visions....
Tom
PS - and indeed, I did used to have a kilt!
PPS - james made a typo and wrote "wild" instead of "away" :) |

I would like to see something more organic, that is the true art side of 3d....I know it sound like a call out, but I am seriously interested in you skills here Tom. |

I'd also like to point out Tom was very involved in developing shaders for ShaderLab too, many of which are still freely available to support your Model side LW rendering.... ;)
And you can tell he knows his way round tS thanks to the excellent Bitesize videos he also made, available on the forum.
But I concur too - it would be great to see some more recent work from you Tom - most of that stuff on the website probably dates back to versions 4 or 5?! |

Ironically, now he works for Caligari he doesn't have time to model. This is telling us something important...because Tom likes to model...Therefore, Caligari are still putting a lot of people power into trueSpace, why else would Tom have no time :D;) and I guess his presence on this forum is just the tip of the iceberg.
So the fact that he doesn't model should be seen as an encouragment that trueSpace has a future ;)....or..? |

I never did organic modeling nowhere3D. I also disagree it is the "true art side of 3D". I have seen plenty of art, 3D and otherwise, which features nothing organic in it. To say otherwise is to impose your definition of art onto everyone else :)
And all that aside, I am not good at making people or animals, just the way of it. I am by nature a logical person, not a freeform person. My thinking is always mathematical, from my music to my 3D, and always in the more rigid and less fluid sense. It's just part of who I am, so even if I had time to model, you would not be seeing anything organic from me :) Closest you get is the clothing on my website, like the fireman's suit. But this is not to do with a 3D skillset, and more to do with a general principle on how my mind works, across all forms of artistry and thinking.
I do some modeling (non-organic hehe!), but it's all been stuff that I can't show or share, so working at Caligari doesn't take me entirely out of the 3D loop! Usually though I don't have much time to make things however! Instead I am trying to show as many people as possible just what can be done with tS, looking for great projects from users, getting some excellent help from users to make things that demonstrate particular abilities, putting people in touch with other people (eg Augusto as the ideal person to make the Retail Experience Center), providing training or support and answering questions, looking after all users new or existing, promoting those users who have things to sell and services to offer, and so on.
HTH!

Uh huh.
Having a sense of humor, being able to be nice to people and make people laugh, all part of making people feel welcome and to having a good positive attitude. A good quality to have, thanks! Other than that, no comment.

Modeling or otherwise I'm still keen to see an updated version of "The War Mages Room", rendered using realtime shaders in tS 7.
Please....:D
Re "and indeed, I did used to have a kilt!" - I guess a kilt would clash somewhat with your Texan ten gallon hat! Do you have a tartan stetson perhaps?:D;) |

In reference to transients aside about Tom's shaders:
I think the trueSpace community has changed it its composition a lot since the advent of ts7 and so many are probably not aware of them and I agree with transient they are great! My current non-work WIP which is has the pause button on at the moment will incorporate one of them (once I press 'play' again), so people will get an idea of what Tom achieved. Maybe, he can guess which one when he thinks about what I have already built...;)

Thanks for the feedback and compliments on the shaders, glad they prove useful! On the landspeeder I am going to guess the Heathaze shader for the engines you have on it, on the assumption you'll go for an action shot showing it moving at speed. Could be several other things, but that's the one I'm going to go for as my guess.
Still hoping I might get time to post some (very) WIP images this week, if I get time to look em out and see if they weren't too early to be worth looking at. Had thought on doing that this weekend, but I 'accidentally' downloaded SynthEdit and spent the time making some basic synthesizers instead :O That turned out to be more engrossing than I had expected! It's very like the Link Editor, so I found it easy to get used to, and I got to try a few things I always wanted a synth to do but had never owned one that did.
Still, should be time this week to dig around in whatever I've dabbled with in 3D, so watch this space.

I'd guess at the glass shader myself, for the windscreen... but I don't recall the heat-haze shader in the free set, is that one of your paid shaders Tom? Sounds interesting... I've used several of your other shaders (the glass, turned metal and fresnel reflection ones in particular) and think they're great - need to work out how best to use them with HDRI as I'd got used to using tS5 lighting which is a bit different....
Look forward to seeing your WIPs if you get a chance.... |

You got it in one Tom:banana::banana:
My original messing with this did not get something as good as you illustrated in your webpage...so I may be turning to you for advice:D. I'd actually forgotten its name...hum I think there was also a Genesis song of the same name...-no that was heathhaze, I think!
Nez: Re. Heathaze it came in one of the commercial shader packs, it might have been part of one of the big packs no longer available...maybe Tom can still sell separately...maybe wait and see how it turns out when I use it, though I anticipate your skills are greater than mine...
PS. It was in TMG Shader pack 1 link here :http://www.tmgcgart.com/ShaderLab/html/tg_pack_1.htm

Yes, it's in one of the for sale packs:
http://www.tmgcgart.com/ShaderLab/html/tg_pack_1.htm#heathaze
They are still for sale as it happens, both as separate packs or as an "all in one" bundle with all the packs.
Been a long time since I used this shader myself. I recall it is dependent on angle of view, so there is a certain amount of "art" as well as "science" to getting it to look right (so it won't be a one size instantly fits all situation).
Let me know if you do get stuck on anything and we can see if we can get it working for you.

Some modeling examples. I took an interest in old radios, not for their functionality just for their looks. I plan on modeling a set of these over time, but started with two art deco ones, since art deco also fascinates me.
The two renders seen here are based on the following two real radios
http://www.theage.com.au/news/investment/turn-up-your-radio/2007/04/17/1176696767372.html
http://www.tuberadioland.com/sparton566bluebird_main.html
I do plan on modeling the valves seen inside the back of the Sparton Bluebird.
Next up a ceiling fan I made ages ago, the plan to put it up for sale, but still haven't done so. Got to ensure it has no concave polys, n-gons, holes, etc!
Then a basic entertainment center, again aim is for this to be up for sale, same thing, needs checking for export compatibility.
Then because I was bored one day, a tape measure (guess you could go and measure all the other objects using it or something).
These all show exactly the kind of thing I like to model, nothing organic, mostly manufactured items, and generally I tend toward making things that I could go on and sell (eg everyday items like furniture, ceiling fans and tape measures). For personal interest, I would like to continue the art deco theme ultimately, if I had more time, and work on maybe some buildings. And old radios and clocks and other old bakelite and valve electronics. Something about those I find artistically fascinating :) And glass items, as I also love glass as a material and find it quite fascinating too.
HTH!
