OK – time for a new contest!
I was supposed to post this last night, but I got distracted by Yaf(a)ray. Sorry.
Anyway, one of the things that has been going around with both the Speed Model and the Monthly model contest is the lack of parity. Several times people have suggested that the exact same thing/object/scene should be done in order to show up people’s skills better.
So I thought I would try it out.
So, here is my Idea.
The purpose of this challenge is to show your Lighting and texturing skills given a ready-made scene. I want to see how far people can go with Truespace given the tools available.
So I have expanded my rules to include the new/free version of Yaf(a)ray.
I have created a scene and basically gotten rid of all the textures. This one should be fairly popular, since people like trains around here.

Here is my Idea. At the end of this post, you will find a zip file of the scene, and all you have to do it texture it.
Here is couple of examples of what I did.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/greypiffle/TS%20pics/Train01.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/greypiffle/TS%20pics/Train09.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/greypiffle/TS%20pics/Train07.png
So, here are the rules:
1) Deadline for entries will be 12:00 midnight on March 20, 2009
2) Start a Work In Progress thread for your submission.
3) Submission should be one 800x600 image and a link to your WIP thread
4) You may enter as many times as you like
5) Texturing/rendering must be done using Real-time DX shaders or Yaf(a)ray.
6)You may use a 3rd party program to add your signature to your piece, or add a background, but not for anything else.
7) You must use all the objects in this scene and if it is in view of the camera, you must not block it completely with your own objects.
8) You may sub-divide all or part of an object to smooth it out.
9) You may add objects to the scene to fill it out.
10) You may move the objects within the scene.
11)You may Modify the objects as long as the base object is recognizable. (see my 3rd picture above for modifying the cylinder before sub-division)
12) You may delete and add and move lights within the Scene.
For new people to the Link Editor:

4) Texturing/rendering must be done using Real-time DX shaders or Yaf(a)ray.
Just for clarification - why? Is there some reason that Lightworks (and VirtuaLight) are no longer consider 'valid' render engines? They're still included in the distributed version of 7.6 (and indeed are the only built-in offline render engines). Indeed, there has been plenty of support for LW being kept in tS8 and beyond...
I'm not trying to be difficult - after all it's your contest and you're free to set the rules as you see fit, and I think it's good to encourage more folks to use both DX and Y-ray but you'll have to count me out for starters - I can't even use Workspace until graphic card issues have been resolved. |

Perhaps maybe a bit of an oversight? After all users of a lower version of truespace will also have difficulty
Perhaps instead of an entire scene, one set object? For example the winning object for the SMC? And any modifications to that object must only be for cosmetic purposes and must be stated?
Not wanting to jump and rip apart your ruleset, but I would do something like this:
1. Texture the model within (whatever time limit)
2. You may enter as many times as you like.
4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.
5. Modifications may be made to the object as long as the original design is recognisable. State any changes
6. Post only two rendered image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you but the main focus is the obejct itself and the lighting, not the scenery.
7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial in the new Tutorium showing how they made their entry (Contact Norm)
8. 3rd party programs must not be used in the submitted entry (except for application of borders or signatures)
This could actually be a pretty nifty idea. But maybe an entire scene might be a bit too much. The only other issue would be the poor saps with old graphics cards, perhaps an date deadline rather than a time limit?
And one otehr thing...what about restrictions on things such as simbiont, shaderlab etc? |

Nez - It's only because we are moving toward the Model side and I want to give people incentive to use it. If someone has a lower version, then I will bend enough to allow it to be used. In which case there is no Model side, but I really want to see how the new toolsets can go.
Weevil - You may indeed post more than one render. Enter as many times as you like. I've added that to my rules.
I gave a long time limit to allow people to get through the whole thing more easily.
However, the winner is free to chang the rules for the next one. I'm just starting it out and I'm sure that it will evolve like the other major challanges.
The train is multiple objects, but there are actually only 5 other objects in this scene.
Give it a try and see how you do with it.
Nez, I know about your Graphics card issues so I will allow you to use lightworks. |

I assume you mean "we're moving AWAY from the model-side"?! ;)
Well 'we' might be, but a lot of us aren't for the moment!
I appreciate the offer to allow me to continue using old-fashioned methods - I'm not sure I'll have time anyway at the moment but will see how we go - before I download the fairly substantial zip file though, could you tell me whether the scene is saves as an RsScn (or whatever the format is) or as a good old scn - if it's a workspace format file, I won't be able to open it...
Thanks

It's an rscn file. I did all modeling in workspace

I forgot which version you used Nez. Here, the first listed is a tS6.0 scene file.
The second is a 5.0 scene file. |

Thanks James, that's much appreciated - hopefully I'll get a chance to download and look at later - I've got version 5.1 and 7.6 on this machine so should be able to use one or both of those versions.
Having time is another matter... |

only 21 more days on this... I suppose I could extend my deadline if people want more time to try it out? |

Honestly I haven't looked at it yet, but 21 days is going to be fine.
Especially so since it is the last weekend of spring break for me.
I don't mind one way or the other, it will depend on who else is doing this and their schedules. |

lol, I have a number of other projects going on all in unfinished states (I hate that) but this looks too fun to past up. Like the option to use DX, that is great. Putting some fire behind that train with smoke and some steam would be cool. Since you allow additional geometry this will allow some face lifts so to speak. :) |

Thanks George!
@noko - Please do join in. If we get enough participation, we can convince them to create a separate forum like the speed model challenge and the Monthly model challenge.
It's a good way for those of us with fair modeling skills(or none) to improve our texturing. I always suspected that my lack of skill there is what has kept me out of the "winner's circle". Since the Monthly and speed challenges have helped me with modeling, I'm hoping that a texture challenge will help me with texturing. |

kena - I'm with ya all the way with this idea and your reasoning! The WIPs will be infinitely helpful to me I'm sure. Even though logically 'texturing' is more up my alley (I'm basically a painter doing 3D), I've been working on doing modeling so much I have not delved into this area. But this is what I need to learn now (that and rendering), so great idea!
I may not participate in the beginning, but I'm definitely watching, and with you. |

Ditto on Dragneye's post - this is a great idea and I hope that it really takes off. Unfortunately, I'm going to be away from my computer for the next several weeks so can not commit to participating myself. I shall be watching though (Hotel Wi-Fi permitting), and with great intrest. I wish all the competitors the best of luck in this exciting contest.
PS: Great image Georg, I loved it. |

Glad to have you aboard... I gotta find out when I set the deadline for and think about extending it.
Remember that I want to see how you make your choices in texturing. teach how you layer or create a texture. |

It's a real shame too, but you can't plan crunch time for exams. *shrugs* |

It is now 8 min after Midnight on Friday the 27th... Tomorrow at Midnight Eastern Time US, I will go through the thread and gather all the links so I can post images and set up a voting thread.
Don't forget to say how you did your textures as this is what the contest is all about!
(some people have already done that) :D |
