I got an email on this software, they have reduced the price.

I see that it has several modules you can buy to enhance it (there's the price trap)

It looked like fun, but is it worth the 20 bucks for the basic program to play around with?

Anyone have experience with it?

The Creature Creator is a subset of the full Spore Game, and not really worth getting now the full game is out (the Creature Creator was released some months prior to the game being released). It's a set of tools to make creatures for the Spore universe, very easy to use and quite fun, but you can't export them anyplace else, and if you don't have the Spore game you can't actually do anything other than look at them.


The Spore game is ok, some people really like it. I found it too limiting at each stage, not really enough sense of previous decisions affecting current and future results, and not enough options or variety. For instance, having a long or short neck doesnt really change your creature at all. And at any time you update the creature, you dont need to just modify and add to what has gone before, you can complete change it into something new.


The game at each stage to my mind is pretty limited, and the final Space stage is the most like a complete game, but even that felt somewhat lacking. I was expecting something more Civilisation-like in terms of how your creature evolved down one tree or another.


However I did get quite a bit of fun out of it, the full game. As well as creatures, you can build spaceships, vehicles and buildings, plus you add "clothes" to your creature, none of which you can do in the Creature Creator alone. The editing is definitely easy, and some people have produced incredible stuff even though you are working from a predertermined number of preset parts and materials.


Given that it was more limited in gameplay than I had hoped, and that I haven't touched it in many months as a result, I'm not sure I would buy it again if I had it to do over. It didn't live up to the hype and my expectations. But it was fun, and I did get many hours of good gameplay out of it.

Yeah, good game all in all, but I agree with Tom on most parts. The fact that you could completely change your creature just about whenever was strange. Also the fact that you had to move onto land, and flying wasn't technically a legitimate option either.


Good idea and all, but not entirely satisfying.

I was really anticipating this game as I was watching the development for years. After hearing the reviews though, I decided against purchasing it. A lot of people were saying that the game should have been named "Bore" instead of Spore. I did play with the creature creator. I do like the concept, how everything is procedural, from the modeling to the character animations, even the music. That allows the world and characters to have a lot of variation and adaptation. Very interesting concept. It sounds like they just didn't pay enough attention to the "fun" factor. Then again, I've never been into the Sims or anything.


So for me, it was more interesting to learn how the game was created rather than actually playing it.
