Even if this thread may not get many posts :D
After all the negativity I would like to know the positive aspects on trueSpace 7.x.
OK for me it's the ease of use and how you get a good result even with few effort.
Rigging and animation for example. I'm absolutly not an animator and I don't want to be
but it's great how easy it is to rig and animate a figure.
I tried the same in 3ds and Cinema but personally no one of these programs achieve the ease of use.
Additionally there are some really cool tools like snapping
and poly additing across edges. Extrude&Bool - modeling like in Sketchup.
Finally the Customizability and the DX part of course which in this kind of quality no other CG program (currently) can offer.
Of course many of this could be improved but I think to find good points
would help to make these stronger. |

Great topic.
For me, it is the real-time rendering. I've been playing around with Blender render as well as Blender+Yafaray and frankly, my hat is off to anyone who can wait around seconds/minutes/hours! for a render to complete. Life is too short.
Is there any other tool that can match tS real-time render/animation features? |

For me personally, it's the big open "work space" of tS. It's great to have lots of room to maneuver and spin that entire room around when one is modeling.
Having the render in the same room as modeling is nice as well.
Other things as well, but those are high on my list. |

Well, I personally like the Link Editor (LE), and the ability
to script animation, special effects, interaction, etc.
I also really like the real time renderer, which provides fast rendering. |

The best part of the workspace side for me is the skeletal tools. Easiest system I have worked with so far. |

Link Editor and scripting. Instead of accepting the things you cannot change you can change the things you cannot accept.
I didn't like the view navigation so I scripted a Maya style navigation.
No target weld tool so I scripted one.
No Layers, someone else scripted one(sorry forgot who did it).
Grow selection turns to points, fix it with a script.
No workspace renderer, people are working on it.
Etc, etc , etc...

speaking of this stuff clintonman, I'd like to add another thing...
the built in tentacles interface for turbosquid; as Tom said we Do need to upload all this cool stuff there. I will start doing that tonight with my stuff.
Hopefully then people can then find the things the scriptors actually Make.
So, that's one more thing I like: tentacles built into ts 7.6 interface. :)

What is good on trueSpace ? Its community of course !
Well, not only that :)
TrueSpace is also a complex program that is almost 100% icons-driven... and I love that.
Also, just like Clinton said, trueSpace is made by its users.
This was true in tS6 days, and is still the case for me in tS7.6 modeler where 50% of the tools I clic are plugins. And this is even more true today as almost everything in the program can be enhanced by users ! No doubt that it still has the potential to become THE ideal software. |

To show that I´m not just criticizing (constructivly tho), I think the good things of the latest version is:
*Realtime visualisation with programmable shader (HLSL) (although it could be made a bit easier to handle)
*Two scripting languages
*Very open architecture
*Can´t say too much about animation, but it seems to be miles ahead of tS6.6 animation tools
*Modeling tools have improoved
Now if only the workflow..... |

Where to begin?
I made all of Buddy World with it, made (hopefully) better designers from kids at school and make a few quid as an illustrator. While I love Vray, all but one of my books uses LW. It is free and all the kids at school can get it now.
I just fear for future developments, that's all...:o |

TS was the easiest to use back when I was trying different things.
The latest V-ray is 5 times faster than the previous version and I like that.
The potential for real-time render is good.
Ease of modeling. Point-edit is easier here than other programs I have tried.
With the Link Editor I can keep track of what objects I have in the scene.
Hoepfully, I will be able to one day program for it, but I still go in and tweek a few things here and there. |

I love the fact that all users past and present can get what they want out of this program.
The new tools are solid and will only get better.
I love that the average smoe can request a tool like layers and the geniuses
(Dele and Stan) deliver without compensation. How about the Steinie Widget?
My gosh 3DMax doesn't even have that!!!
Real time rendering is great and I believe the future of 3D.
I'll bet in the next 5 years offline rendering will be a memory.
The trueSpace forums should be the envy of the Internet.
I truly believe Roman's heart is in the right place and hopefully he will keep surprising us with more improvements and tools.
I don't think this program will die, there are too many of us that care! |

I work with Truespace for years. I made several hundred design for luxury products in Europe ,USA, Japan and many other countries for most famous people. Why I love this soft? I do not know exactly. perhaps because I know well. this is my pencil. It helps me concentrate on the essentials: the creation
My web site is 100% TS:
http://www.crea-vision.fr
My work did not prevent me to do a thread yesterday that seems pessimistic. when we love, we want the best and I wanted to wake up a team that seemed asleep (not the community). I have a project for an optimistic thread. It will be a surprise. I need time to do it :)

I dont see my 3d life as fixed to one application.
So what i like about truespace is that it is complimentary to most other software that I use now.Its got tools and render engines that the other apps that I use dont have.Plus its got the LE that the other apps that I use
dont have.I post at this forum very much about how to use TS WITH
other software here because thats the way I use it.
The people always want to see new features this and that but dont realy
see that many things out there can be used FOR Truespace.
Many of these possibilities are free too !
What realy isnt good is that you cant import and export from workspace with
very big files.
We could use Truespace even better if we had options to go in and out of workspace directly and use its huge abilities especially its realtime render capabilities.
Dont ask for so many things just look around they are already there you
just have to go for them ... then Truespace will make more fun to use for you
again.
Plus i´m looking foreward to the new render engines from workspace
including dribble from workspace....;) |

Realtime is pretty cool
I love modeling in the WS side, just plane ole perspective view. Modleing this way is not like modeling the old traditional way.
Animation blending is very cool, especially for a free program
BVH import and export
physics interacting with your custom blended bvh motions to created new and more powerful motions :)

The capacity to set up a skeleton and joint limits quickly and easily is amazing compared to other programs I've used and 6.6. Now that it has target morphing as well that makes for a very powerful core for character animation. |

Let's not push it shall we :) We need IK2 before I am even going to go there yet. I drew the line at BVH and physics (though morphing is pretty cool also) because IK2 will need to be implemented before we can say character animation in TS is there...
But, I admire the enthusiasm :D

The question was what do you like and I like! :) but I never said it was complete in this regard although it's definitely heading in the right direction and the implementation of what's there is real nice. But by all means, give me new tools to play with. |

I, for one, have really enjoyed what the link editor and scripting has done for us. Looking back at earlier versions of trueSpace I loved the ability to run python scripts, especially with Lars' mesher plugin for creating geometry. What was once hard but rewarding back then is even easier now and I find myself dreaming up bigger and better projects all the time thanks to the ability to combine scripting bricks. Granted, finding the personal time to explore these new ideas is still a challenge but that's not Caligari's fault!
I like our Caligari staff too! They've been very helpful to me over the years and bring much of their own talents to bear. |

Finding time to learn anything is my own fault (though it is a welcome one, since it means I have an income now). |

What is at the Top of my list... the forum community. I would have been gone a long time ago if it weren't for them. And I would like to add, the tS staff (at least those I have communicated with).
Though I am just starting to come to grips with workspace side, I LOVE that now I can work with loops in one shot (it's the little things :) ). I also find the widget quite effective (basically now needing only one view window).
I think the Link editor is a major plus, though I have no idea how to use it effectively, yet.
Also, I see here many people consider the animation tools good, or at least easy to use. That's great since that will be where I would like to excel, and concentrate my time.
Then there's real time preview renders... a MUST on my list (I know; Model side only. But at least it's still there) |
