I'm currently trying the free 3D paint module which for a freebie does'nt seem too bad,on thier website they mention trueSpace as a "Complimentary 3D Application".

Hadn't heard of this one, grabbing a download to take a look. The 3D painting is the bit I want to have a look at, always good to get more UV mapping tools and options!

Not sure when I'll have time to test, so looking forward to finding out how useful it is.

It works reasonably well a little bit sluggish on my laptop but could get the job done,I found a couple of video tutorials and a pdf tutorial which might help but I will stick with 3DCoat :)

Unlike 3dcoat, there is a free version of the painting aspect of Blacksmith. It also has an auto uv option which works well (for seamless painting).

It's not bad, but I'm not sure it really compares with 3dcoat (although I haven't used 3dcoat much since the last free beta). That app is really making waves.

I tried it when it was in the testing phase and it was so buggy (kept crashing) I gave up on it.

I did download the free version (it has a restriction on texture size) but haven't tried it since I got Vista.

It seems pretty solid now with v3.1 ,I'm running it on Vista Home Premium 32bit and so far no problems its well worth having in your toolbox.

The texture size is reasonable at 1024 x 1024

Shown here at half size as you can see I did'nt unwrap the model I just auto unwrapped the faces so I could paint directly on the model :D

That reminds me of Zbrush UV maps. They are okay in the program, but useless to 'touch-up' in a 2D paint editor.

Hi JimB

Downloaded and tried the freeware version on Vista. But when I save a painted .obj in blacksmith and open in truespace ,the texture disappears.Sometimes I can see it in model view but it does not show up in the render.(object looks black). What could i be doing wrong? (Saved both object and material into the same folder).

thanks

Bala

HI balagopal,

Try this :- On the top right hand menu bar RMB click on the orange cube icon and you should get a box like the one below.Check that the size is above 64 x 64 (default) if it is'nt LMB click on the button and hold then drag down to at least 1024 x 1024, you may want to do this for each viewport.

Thanks JimB,

tried your suggestion . At last found that I had not exported the image file at all for reapplying in true space. All the time i was trying to apply the material file exported along with the object as a texture.
