If your not into animation read on ...

Well most people think about Sketchup as a simple drawing tool

but not all people here know that you can use it as a midler (turntable)between Truespace and quite a few other render engines. Or lets say it in other words you can use it for stageing.

Its very easy to move Truespace expoted models around in Sketchup (or scale themor retexture them)!

If youve got the money you can buy the full Vray thing.

Its an aternative to having to learn very complicated software like 3d max

if you want Vray. theres a whole lot of other alternatives like Podium or

the free renderer Indigo.

Well its the easiest to learn alternative to the now defunct Truespace Vray.:)

Heres a list of supported render engines

http://cad-3d.blogspot.com/2008/06/rendering-for-sketchup.html

The pictures show objects of the truespace library exported as 3ds staged

and rendered with a plugged render engine.

There is a 30 days demo for Vray for Sketchup.....

Heres the link to the free indigo

There is a Vray for Sketchup? Wow, I didn't know that. I thought MS was in competition with Google? Now I'm REALLY surprised they dropped Vray for tS.

I thought I'd give it a go... and hell fire what a pain in the a** Sketchup is.. the plan was to do a scene in TS in the shortest time, IE a light source, ground and a DAZ car

TS scene 10 mins, Bryce 5 mins, google.. i never even got the 3 meg car with textures correct in there! the model was jerking around like I was running a 486 so i quickly lost interest

I'll try again later but it doesn't seem an easy option.. Blender and indigo maybe

Nigec !

The proof is in the pudding as they always say......

Heres a 3d model that was imported as a 3ds with all the textures

and then rendered from within sketchup with the free indigo.

Indigo is a non biased render engine so I didnt let it cook for very long

because i didnt have the time but here it goes.

Note that you have to do the smoothing of a mesh where you want it with ctrl+the eraser tool and wipeing over the mesh.....

Half the problem is I really don't like Sketchup's controls, so doing a full scene I reckon the pc would be going out of the window lol

I'm really interest to see what happens with the TS intergration :)

Heres my cr*ppy attempt:

First is Sketchup, cooked for over an hour.. forgot to smooth the wheels

Second in Bryce, soft shadows took 10 mins to render

dunno whats gone wrong with the front disc textures

I'm not so sure they can be compared. Truespace vray was about $300. sketchup version is $799. I assume it has $499 more features than the truespace version.

Is it really MS that has the only say? - perhaps it was Chaos that pulled the plug on VRay for tS.

Or dramatically raised the license fees. Perhaps with MS now owning Caligari, Chaos figured they were in for a big payday!
