Hi Everybody!
I realy love the modeling functionality in trueSpace, its outstanding beyond any other 3D software i used! I made a few things in trueSpace but never got anything finished because i'm confused about when i best switch from Workspace to Modelspace (and for what) and vice versa.
For example, when i want to create a new material, can this only be done in Modelspace?
When do you switch? |

Think of TS7.61 as a "little bit schizophrenic". It has multiple personalities, the old architecture the Model side, and the new architecture the Workspace side. Because Workspace side is still not complete the Model side is still there to help you get things done in case you need some of the tools from the older more mature toolset.
You can make your materials, shaders on the WorkSpace side. If you aer familiar with the older Model side, you could make them over their, depending on what renderer you want to use, or you can stay on the Workspace side and make your materials (DX0 and DX10 compliant) materials.

Where you plan to render from will determine what 'half' you texture with.
Workspace: DX/ 'realtime' or VRay render engine.
{If you don't already own VRay, you're a bit out of luck at the moment as the tS-centric version is no longer available. (See also: this past week's brouhaha)}
Model: 'native'/ built-in Lightworks render engine, or export to Renderman engine via the Dribble plugin.
You can also export geometry/models to import into other packages and render out with those.
The materials don't necessarily 'crossover' from one engine to another without a lot of tweaking, so it's best to decide which engine you're going to use before you start texturing.
Modeling, you can use either half, the general concensus is that Model has a fuller toolset, but Workspace has newer/better/more robust tools, but not yet all the functions that Model has like NURBS, lathe, collision detection, etc. |

I don't use nurbs since TS7.6. Because Ts crash when i try to load a scene with nurbs (created with ts 6.6 or ts 7.6). The real problem is TS can't do a good polygonal objet when you try to convert the nurbs before to load the scene. Triangulated objets from nurbs are not the best way if you want to use SDS surfaces.
I think TS8 should no longer need 6.6 interface but It should be compatible with Ts6.6 scene. I am not sure because it will not be easy .
Keep your old TS version for security....

Since Caligaris latest stupid decision to stop selling Vray, this is easy: if you don't own Vray and wants to render your creations: don't even bother with workspace.
Since workspace doesn't have a render anymore I don't see any use for it at all. Forget it until it get a renderer. Do all your work in modelside - you will have to render it there anyway. |

That's it.
Workspace is where you should work if you plan to populate Microsoft's Virtual Earth -the company that decided that VRay was not profitable- with free models
Oh, Workspace is also the tool to use if you wish to create real-time presentations to be run on truePlay... Okay, truePlay development is very slow, but it is worth to mention it  |

Thanks everybody for your opinions so far. I eventually want to use trueSpace for modelling. Rendering in TS is not important for me.
I personally use Blender for rendering scenes (@home and @work). I think if trueSpace does not fill rendering requirements for you anymore you could give Blender a try, the upcoming 2.5 release will also improve the user interface. However, the modelling capabilities are not that powerful (but still great!).
I see that trueSpace may change directions for you by dropping rendering but i bet there will be some nice new options along the way. - Just my 2 cents on that.
I didnt know that you can create new materials in the Workspace, but now i found it.
Im still interested for what you personally switch the spaces or maybe what space do you only use. |

Regarding renderers for Workspace,
we are working on a Yafray exporter:

Huzzah!
Will it allow for animation?
(Edit. Sorry I should ask this question on the above thread! - Oh hang on its a single post I can't ask a question? - found it) |
