Ill start. I liked the UI and how easy it was to jump right in a model. Also, I loved the community. It is not really big, but if you need help, they are right there to help you!(thanks rjeff, prodigy, tomG, frootee, the list keeps going!) Now how about you?

I got the $99 Easter special for version 4.3 back in 2000 (or 2002? )

stuck with it ever since.

I really like the versatility.

And yeah, the people here are really polite and friendly.

At first, I was toying with both Blender and tS. I actually was getting more accomplished in Blender at first. Then I started asking questions about tS animation to the Forums. Everybody was very helpful and surprisingly prompt with their answers. Pretty soon, I started playing more with tS and found it to be much easier than Blender.

I'd used an earlier version, 3.something I think, and loved the UI. I got 7.5 at the beginning of the big sale during Jan 08. I love how workspace is setup, that I can do modeling and scene placement and it feels like I'm in one big space to do whatever I want with it, the collaboration capabilities and the real-time rendering.

Oh thats a good one !

I used to use Macs for ages and only did 2d !

When I got my laptop (windows)about 8 years ago I wanted to get into 3d

or what I thought was cad drawing at that time and stumbled over a

copy of TS 4.3 in an electronic department store.

I already experimented with Terragen and Bryce at that time.

The salesmen there told me that it was pretty good and so I got it

and did some experiments with it.

The next version I got was TS6 ( from the Andy Kay tutorial special in 3d World)and I already had Cinema 4d at that time and Strata 3d...:)

I still use Truespace a lot but now supplement it with programs like Moi 3d and Sketchup and Vue Inf plus I do lots of renders in Kerky..

Back in the day of 6.6 I took advantage of a competitive upgrade from C4D. I find the modelling tools and the ui much easier to use than other packages. The ui takes some getting used to but once you are there it is terrific. I admit I have not looked at others since 6.6 (maya, xsi, 3ds, or any others) with the exception of Blender and that for a brief look at hair and fluids.

I have a lot yet to learn about TS and making it do the things I need. I am enjoying that process of discovery immensely and intend on continuing down this path for the foreseeable future.

Why?

I love truespace user inteface since the first day... i love the way you can manipulate the objects...

That love became in passion, that passion it became in hours and hours of practice... and now i can't start my computer without start my truespace :D

In one word.. im a "truespacenatic" :)

What can i say about the community???

Well, my first block was the lenguage but everybody in the community start to respond me in a very gentle way.. with lot of respect about my questions.. and now many of these users are my friends.. The list is huge and growing! :)

The other was Caligari it self..

Hahhaha.. I remember one day that Paul Ashington phoned me to give me assistance and my grandmother took the phone..hahaha.. i can't imagine one speaking in 100% english, and my granthmo speaking in 100% Spanish..

was hilarouse..:D

Paul, Bibiana, Norm,Thomas, Remy.. Great people with a BIG heart!

Now i meet others great guys like Tomas and many other talent developers..

So that's why i choose truespace and im very proud of my choice :)

I used to use Real 3D Way Back When on my Amiga, and I saw a machine in an Amiga shop running Caligari 24, and thought that was really cool, albeit far outside my means to aquire. A few years later, a friend of mine bought trueSpace SE, and showed it to me.
This was the interface I was looking for! trueSpace 2 was just out, and I bought it, and have been a Caligari user ever since. Boy, has it come a long way since version 2. :)

Way back when man was still struggling to perfect the square wheel (pre-dating the round wheel :) )I used to use some interesting programs that later became part of AutoDesks first foray into 3D as we see it now... I switched from Atari ST to Mac, and used another program by a company called Alias Sketch, it later became some unheard of name... I think it was Maya or some thing dumb like that :)... switched to PC's in 95 ish... only program I could find that looked cool and had an interesting community was TS. I think I got in version 3, but V4 followed only a few months later (if my dates are off pardon me, it was a while ago and I did not write all of this down :D)

I still mess around in it.

b_scotty, same here, Amiga times, what fun times too. Anyways I played around with Caligari 24, also Imagine and demo of Real3d. Only one actually made sense to me and that was Caligari 24. Later I picked up tS 4 and slowly started to learn. Since I've tried other 3d programs demo's, I mean really put some effort into them too and just didn't like the dos interface :). Well that is how it felt to me. I just think visually and tS is my favorite program of all time.

I was messing around in an MMOG called There, back around 2003-2004 I think. I discovered that users could create content for the game so I downloaded Gmax. I went through a couple of tutorials and it was agonizing. I hated the interface. The simplest tasks seemed overly complex.

Then when looking for some 3d video tutorials, I came across a "KidsOnline" series that demonstrated trueSpace3.2. The instructor mentioned that tS3.2 was a fully functional and free 3d application with animation and rendering. So I downloaded it and fell in love within the first five minutes. The interface was totally intuitive for me. I was doing things in minutes which took hours of digging through the manual to do Gmax. TS was definitely the 3d app for me.

A few months later I purchased and installed tS6.6 and got to know this great community. Then when 7.0 came out, I got into scripting. I was really excited about the possibilities in the new architecture. Though I would still really like to see the new architecture standing on it's own, the power and possibilities of it still boggle my mind. I love how it allows me to work both the artistic and rational sides of my brain. Creating models and renders as well as scripted tools and objects. I've spent many a nights laughing like a mad scientist creating cool inventions in his garage. My neighbors must think I'm nuts. :p :D

I thought POV-RAY was the only thing there was in 3D until I happened upon a kids Website that had training for tS3.

Hmmm, I thought - this looks interesting. The rest is history.

I am one of these who started to use Truespace becasue of the several free versions they sent with magazines who also entitled you to make a cheap upgrade.

My first version was 3.x (don't remember which) that was free with a magazine. Then you could update to TS 4.3. That was the most expensive program I ever had and has bought (until the upgrade for 7.5 but since I was a university student when I bought 4.3, that felt more expensive). It is very important to understand that this cheap upgrades was a great thing - I couldn't and still can't afford the big names like 3D Studio but I want to have a real version and being honest (not pirate the software).

Truespace was easily one of the most cost effective solutions - important when you are an amateur.

My problem is that I have used TS for several years (10 years now soon!) but I have never mastered the software. The problem is a lack of time and talent - you can succeed with only one of this but if you lack both of them, then you won't get far. If you have both, then you will become a master.

I would like to add a question here - is anyone who wrote the book "Inside Truespace 4" still active on this forum?

I wanted to try modeling and had narrowed my choice down to I think three apps from trying out different demos. I had general newbie modeling question. My question was answered within a couple of hours from TS. Of the other two apps...neither one ever responded to my question.

I figured if I got stuck I was more likely to get help with TS.

Since then I've tried a couple of other apps, but I like the TS interface and find it a lot more intuitive for me to work with.

Than TS2, TS3, 3.1, 4, 5, 6, 6.6, 7, 7.1, 7.5 and now 7.6 is free ;)

I bought TS 2 when it came out because out of all the 3D apps out there had a very steep learning curve and expected you to be a world class artist and a world class programmer in order to get anything done. But TS 2 was so intuitive that I didn't even need to look at the manual to do anything to start out with.

I kept upgrading to version 4.2 and then had a period where I didn't do any 3D at all. When I decided to come back, it was version 6 and the learning curve was a bit higher, but doable.

Out of all the programs out there so far, TS has the best balance between modeling and rendering. It just makes more sense to me.

I got an offer on PC Plus or something like that to upgrade from v3 to v5 so I upgraded, then to 6.6 and to 7.5...It was the cheapest way to get into 3D modelling for me so that's why I went for it.

Like Mr. 3d, I started out with Blender, well to be honest I started with Bryce3D a long time ago and then migrated to Blender (all of course in a strictly very rarely part time kind of hobby thing).

I found tS back in August of last year and have been with it ever since. I have a lot to learn but for what I am using it for (fun) you cannot beat the price.

Would I stay with tS if they started charging for future versions? I don't know. Since it is a hobby I don't know how much money I would put into it. As I have said before, my kids can always go to Junior College. :D

I started with version 2 then 3.2 when it was a free download, my brother bought 6.6 which i inherited, then i got 7.6, but still favour the older version

Like tahnoak its only a hobby, I have kids so buying the latest and the best isn't really an option, to be honest I barely scratch the surface of what TS can do, I don't need more, everything I do beyond the contest is low poly and game related

I choosed TS because I follow in love by his UI, it was too easy and intuitive. I discovered TS in his 3.2 free version, I bought a magazine with free programs and TS was in that CD. But I used only for fun until april 2008 when I got the opportunity to work with my dreams job: 3d Animator. And this was before the 7.6, when I got the email telling me that the 7.6 was free I got crazy. It couldnt had come in a better time! Now Im starting my own company of 3d animation based in Truespace 7.6!

Thank you Caligari! :jumpy:

TrueSpace was the first 3D app I ever used.. Ver 3.2 was given to me by a friend.. I was hooked.. Bought 4.2 and later 6.6.. I've tried many other packages Light Wave,3D Max etc.. Compared to TrueSpace they were extremely unfriendly and tedious.. Nothing compares to TrueSpace's intuitive approach and ease of use and quality of finished work.

1. It's FREE! After installing and uninstalling (in frustration) Blender about a dozen times and playing with XSI ModTool, I found out about tS 7.6 while browsing a 3D Modeling magazine at the bookstore.

2. It is a 'complete' solution with modeling, animation, scripting and some physics--so it is capable of much and is a good platform for learning things that would be useful with any 3D tool.

3. It is not a limited version with crippled functionality or watermarks.

4. The UI on the Workspace side is uncluttered and it is easy to get results quickly without having to remember a zillion hotkeys and icons. (I am not very fond of the Model side.)

5. The real-time renderer suits my needs for now and provides instant 3D gratification.

I started with an Amiga 1000 with an "IBM Bridgeboard 286 " and utilized "Imagine 3D" and for vector graphics "Aegis Draw". My buddy had an Amiga with the "Toaster" and the first version of "Lightwave". The results were awesome but the UI felt odd. I didn't like the module path to make a render, I wanted everything on one screen.
Secretly one night a buddy (I think he was a ninja) slipped me software on a 5-1/4 floppy code named "Caligari" priced around $1000. I played with it for an evening and moved on, thinking it was overpriced but had an interesting interface. In those days I used to always try before I buy.
Years later I heard rumors that Caligari was moving to the PC platform and had changed the program name to "trueSpace". (I thought shift "t" on their keyboard must be broken at that "nutty Company called Caligari).

The Amiga platform here in the States had been dying and time had come for me to decide between a PC or a Mac/Lisa). I visited the Apple store and checked out their stuff and liked what I saw until they quoted me a price. "Overpriced" I thought and cliquish. I then drove to the local PC store to check out their stuff and what was on the screen? ...trueSpace and it's beautiful Icons.
After discovering that creating 3D objects in that wonderful UI was now enjoyable I was hooked. Whipped out the old checkbook and became a lifelong fan.

Got tS2 free on a magazine, not too long after moving to the PC from the ST (I was into MIDI music more than graphics or chipset sampled stuff, so went the ST rather than Amiga route).

Having only seen POVRay (I think it was - it was command based, terribly slow, on the ST) I hadn't done any 3D graphics, though they fascinated me. I didn't quite "get it" right away and so didn't spend any time with tS2 other than maybe an afternoon. Half Life then brought me Worldcraft, their 3D editor, and that made it easier for me to grasp fundamentals in 3D. Having built a church model in it (http://www.tmgcgart.com/html/norman_church.htm ), I found I was expecting more than the tool could deliver (in part because it had no offline rendering, so everything had to work in real-time - my how times have changed, now real-time is coming around again as the thing to be!). So I wanted real modeling tools, I reawoke tS2, and this time it made sense, all this UV mapping and texturing and stuff.

Working with that for some time, I then upgraded to tS4 as that was the then current version, through a magazine offer. I did consider the lower priced tS3.2, but ultimately decided to jump in with the latest version after all. As an aside, I *always* liked how Caligari never discontinued their old versions, but brought them down in price, making full versions accessible to those who couldn't afford the latest and greatest - it's always been irritating to me that other software is "buy the newest at this really high price, or don't buy at all!" which I find locks many people out of being able to get into 3D, or 2D, etc. Indeed Caligari's aim to *enable* people to get into 3D was part of the attraction of the company, both when I was a customer and of course when an employment opportunity came up. I liked that philosophy, which of course found its ultimate expression in tS7.6 becoming free.

Anyway, back then with tS4 I got involved with beta testing tS5, and with beta testing for Primitive Itch a third party developer of plug-ins, and heavily involved in this excellent community with the forums and IRC meetings once per week (at crazy early AM hours for me, since I was in the UK at the time), and then ultimately became part of the Caligari team - and that, as they say, was that :)

I'm another one that got hooked by magazine coverdiscs - started right back with tS1/SE, followed by 2 and 3.1 also from coverdiscs. Took advantage of a special offer for a paid upgrade to 4.3 and then again to 5.1, so I paid moderate cash of each of those albeit not full price. Having no money after that I sat and watched wistfully as progress was mde onto version 6.x and 7.0/7.5 and was then stunned by the free release of 7.6 which has allowed me to move up again for free... I'm still only really using it in a mock-6.6 manner but it's enough to keep me quite happy for a while.... I still don't get to spend anything like as much time using tS as I'd like and never have, which is a real shame as there's so much I want to do! But that's the down side of a long commute, young family, etc etc...

And wow - I thought I'd been onboard one way or another quite a long time, but some of you guys have been with Caligari from before trueSpace.... impressive!

I started in 1974. I was making programs with a computer that occupied an entire room.

In 1977 I made my first 3d soft. It was more scientific than artistic.

I knew that 3d was a technical for the future.

Since the first version of Truespace I quit programming for the design.

Today I continue to work with this soft.

it is better to use a tool that we know rather than understanding how a more sophisticated.

the important thing is to produce quality.

With truespace I can do it without losing time to understand how it works.

the tool is good but the brain is better.

About 3 years ago, I decided to re-enter the art world (after a 15 yr forced hiatus of NO art, not even sketching), and since it was a new beginning, thought I'd go all the way. What a dream, what a psychedelic experience, what ecstasy, to be able to watch my 2D work... move on screen. WOW!
So I started looking into 3D apps. Had no experience whatsoever with computers (others did the typing and stuff, as I didn't even own a personal computer). Looked at a few websites to get oriented, Caligari smelled blood in the water, and started incessantly sending me emails about their software (to their credit; and a private thank you :), as not many other companies even bothered).
I was looking for a complete package so took the plunge (6.6), knowing I am heading into totally uncharted waters.
Basically, still here :D

PS: Was cleaning out my library last year ( I have two; public and private) and lo and behold, in the back of my first 'want to be an animator?' book, there is a copy of tS1.1!
Man, I could have lived this dream over 10 years ago had I known what I had.
