I've been playing around with this for a while. It started out as a collection of 'stuff' for trying out different features in the TS7 beta releases. Then I made some trees in xfrog and started playing with lighting. This is the result. I used the VirutuaLight render engine with global illumination and some infinite lights.

I'm trying to learn so I'm definitely open to comments and suggestions.

Thanks.

Basically the lighting isn't bad. My suggestions for daylight setup:

One Key light for the sun. Color and shadow softness depends on time of day and atmosphere.

Bluish fill light(s) with quite low intensity, no shadows, representing the ambient light reflected by the atmosphere.

Fill light with low intensity pointing upward to represent the light bouncing from the ground. Color depends on material. If you are using GI you don't have to bother about that, GI is doing that automatically.

Nice job Heidi, Keep up the good work. That looks very nice so far.

How long did it take to complete?
Is there any post production on this render?

A question, did you use the virtuaout reflectance shader at all? I'm going mad setting up that shader. The sluggish tweaking and response in the material preview is killing me

Are you using an IBL for the background? The reason I ask is I can't get VL to render the background unless it is an image based light background.

An Omni light with Lens Flare effect to simulate the sun in the sky would be cool.:)

I think it looks terrific! I don't have tS 7 so I can't offer any technical advice but I think this looks wonderful. You might think about some more complex textures (again I don't know how Virtualight shaders work:( ) but some dirt and westhering always adds a bit of extra depth. Good work so far.

I tried this plugin for a very short time and honestly I don't remember how useful I found it.

http://tsx.uvworx.com/abandoned.html#sunshine

sunShine adds sun to the scene. Sun is simulated with a light that changes position and intensity according to geographical location and time of year, day.

I guess you can check it for compatibility.

Nice image tho...

Heidi,

It is really a nice picture!

I still did not start with Virtualight.

But you ask for comments and suggestions.

What is the time? Perhaps 9am or 3pm?

Summer?

In my opinion, the shadows should be darker and the lights brighter.

The whole picture seems to have fog or haze or what ever one would say in english. (I hope it's not my monitor ;) ) Could it be to much ambient light?

And for this reason the picture do not have enough depth. All objects seem to be at one (near) distance.

So, my suggestions are:

Give more contrast, or play with gamma correction (post render?)

Try different shades of green for the plants (front and back)

Give a little dirt to the objects.

I like it very much! Glad to see some of what VirtuaLight can do. Looking forward to more.

Nice work Heidi! :)

It looks like you're getting good results with Virtualight. I think maybe a little more contrast could make things pop a little more, but all in all it looks really nice.
