It started out with me just following a head tutorial, then I decided to see what I could do with it after that...

Here is a link to the head tutorial.

WARNING: the tutorial uses ::gasp:: another software. It'll work in tS just as easy tho...

Ugh. I hate modelling hands. Time for a break I say...

Come to think about it... Not so crazy about toes either. Maybe I am digitally challenged.

LOL yeah I can see the Spidey reference too. My goal is to make this into something I can tweak into either a male or female. Looks real male right now tho...

I got some feedback on another forum and I churned out this tweak:

137

The issue is whether or not it's better to model with the arms to the side (since that is where the characters arms will be most of the time) or with the 'T' pose (so that more poses are possible).

Anybody got any advice or an opinion?

Looks good Neas. As far as the 'T' pose, I also heard it's helpful to model the legs slightly apart, and the knees bent a little. One other thing I have seen is a twist built into the forearm. You probably already know this, but the generel idea behind all this is to have the limbs in mid-range. This make it so the deformation is only half of one direction, rather than the full range of motion ( arm down to arm up ). This is just general advise. Seeing as how I never was able to get bones to work in TS, I can not testify by my expertise in these matters.

Again, it looks real good, look forward to seeing more.

Et tu, aholio?

Bones haven't worked for me either in tS5 at least. I am tempted to try again with this model but I really can't afford to frustrate myself at this point.

Looking good, Naes3d. Someday I will go back to my extremely failed attempts at character modelling. :)

My sympathies are with you naes3d - I guess it's not dissimilar to classical artists where the human form is concidered the hardest thing to get right.

One comment I'll make is I like the way you have defined the shoulders as bering slightly raised - just that small detail gives a certain tension to the pose and suggests 'life' IMHO

You are so right about using tS bones too - but they can be used. It's just like getting to Carnegie Hall - practice practice practice.

I'm sure that's of no real help at all but, as I said, my symapathies are with you.

For myself I keep putting my Human Figure work aside and coming back to it from time to time. Interspersing it with other less daunting challenges gives me less of a feeling that 3D art is just too demanding and lets me feel like I'm making some sort of progress when I get stuck.

Keep on keeping on...

And all this time I thought getting to Carnegie Hall involved taking the bus.
No wonder I never got there.
Naes: Good to see you got your tS going. Isn't this better than waiting months for tS7?- at least your skills won't get rusty in the meantime.
I can offer zero advice on modeling humans, seeing as any attempts I've made ended up looking more like the starring role in 'The Blob'.
There's a good reason I model stuff like chairs.

Yeah, it's good that tS is working again. When it crapped out on me last time I really thought it was the end. Of course from what I hear, tS7 will be a bit like a new app anyway...

Regardless, it's good to be back in the driver seat again. For now, tS is still my modeler of choice.

Rigging? Well, that's another story...

Hey Naes - congratulations Dude, I see you are back on the distinguished road AND you've hit the magic 30 posts and become a full member! See what happens? You install ANY version of trueSpace and good things start to happen!!:D :D

Looks good, Naes. One of these days I'll have to have a go at my first character too. I'd like to make a generic woman, man, and child for my library.

Naes3D: Nice model! Really clean - quads - subdivides well.

I'd suggest downloading the MotionStudio demo and playing with it a bit. It is a joy to rig and animate with! You'll have full control over the vertex weighting so you can bypass the issues like ribcages caving in when the arms move down, etc.

Still trying to fix that shoulder armpit area. I think it's gettin' better.

Clearly I am avoiding the hands for now LOL. I've done hands before, I just wasn't pleased with the result when I did. One step at a time tho...

Frank, I dunno. I downloaded a copy of the MotionStudio demo and just wasn't grokking. But, honestly, I did so at a time when I wasn't at my most patient.

I am still wary about delving into MS. There are a few issues I have, the least of which is my expectation is that the 7.1 animation tools will make MS unnecessary.

Who knows tho, the demo couldn't hurt could it...?

You can bypass that with native tools as well..

Still waitin' for that bus Naes? Go you, man!

A tip for when you get to the hands. Use the hand that comes with tS libraries as a template to get the proprtions right. Then you can just build your SDS cage right over top of it.

Really? I was kinda seeing a puppy...

Just Kidding. Much like me mum told me, I want this model to grow up to be anything it desires.

okay, work has begun on the hand...

tS surprisingly hasn't crashed during the making of this model. The weird behavior is starting up again tho. Good thing I am saving often...

Good to see the work is still progressing on your Ninja mummy (or is it mummy ninja?).

So tS hasn't crashed? Wait till you start to add bones! I just lost an entire scene and gained a valuable lesson - it's possible to crash tS 6.6 hard enough to corrupt your scene file to the extent it won't open. You all know the moral of that story, - the way to Carnegie Hall is save, save, save!

On a happier note I finally succeeded in getting one of my characters rigged - it's not just a matter of what you do but also a metter of the order you do it in.

Okay, a hand emerges from the shadows...now he can be a proper ninja mummy and execute Ra's Finger of Death...

...or not :D

Aw he looks great! Seriously, I think he has excellent proportions and manages to look quite life-like. There's something about his pose - I know he's in the classic Vitruvian Man posture but there is a life-like tension in the way he stands and 'holds' himself - maybe it's his shoulders.

Anyway I reckon he's looking great.
