I am at the point now, where I can start modeling the next VP pinball table I am making. Its a version of Ballys Eight Ball.
I spent the last 2 days redrawing the playfield texture, as no good pictures were available.
Once that was done I could start in good ol' 3D. I am breaking in
TS7 on this table, but I am mainly using the model view. I need to be able to
render huge master images once I'm done, and I dont need any SS modeling
for this table.
Heres my first small (640x480) render. I'll move on to adding the posts and rubbers next.

I'd be curious to know how a pinball table would work in Player with Physics :) I know that would be different from the ones you're building in several ways, but I still think it would be an interesting project to tackle sometime.
Thanks for sharing these, they look fantastic! Any thoughts on rendering the table with VirtuaLight, V-Ray or HDRI? Might be interesting (though may not be the look you need, which you seem to have mastered already with "existing technology" ;) )
Thanks!

Thanks, vizu.
Tom....
I have thought about doing one in player, and it should be doable. I dont know how fast the physics engine can run in TS though. Its got to be pretty fast to keep up with a screaming ball. :)
You can bet I'll do some experimentation along those lines. :D
As for the look, yeah, I do like the look I stumbled on, though I may try a HDRI (of maybe a arcade), to see if it adds to the image. The rendering times could get tough though....
Its a pinball table, and there is no way around using lots of transparent, reflective and or translucent objects and a TON of lights.
My average table image in TS6.6, takes from 12 to 18 hours to render at 2048x1536. I just let it go overnight.

Hmm, I guess it would need to be approached in a similar way to the other engine, ie you'd render out the table and use the resulting rendered imagery overlaid in some way on the table, otherwise it might not get close in appearance and speed.
I am not sure it would get close in speed anyway, but it would still be a fun project :) Fun to tackle just as a simple set up too with as much as DirectX9.0c has to offer, just to see!
Thanks!

That is the beauty of HDRI though-speed. Renders real fast but excellent quality. I cannot vouch for Daybe's diner shot but my MP3 render in gallery section took no time at all to render. Matter of minutes without high AA.
Go on try it...you know you want to...;) |

I just tried the HDRI, and it does look good. I have to turn down the intensity or the playfield lights get washed out.
I think I'll use the HDRI for a finishing "Ambience" light, and of course, to give any reflective objects something to reflect.
The HDRI by itself (with no playfield lights on) renders very fast. But whats a pinbal machine with no playfield lights? :)

Interesting project indeed. I guess it would be very intensive to set up all the little bulbs for GI while still maintaining the desired effect. Light intensity would have to be kept very low for sure, square falloff a must. But with caustics (and the right settings  ) it surely would look killer. |

That looks good. I wonder what some of this might look like in player. Is that HDRI or Vray? I cant quite tell if you are employing new techniques yet.
I like it so far. |

Nope. Just standard TS LightWorks render.
I figure when I'm done I'll add a HDRI on top for atmosphere.

Heres my next wip. Stuff I did today. I cleaned up an targa'd the plastic graphic images, then modeled the actual plastics, and textured. Then imported them into the table.

Heres the latest. I did a full size render (the final size I use for making the game, 2048x1536). I'll use this render to find all the little things I need to fix, and remind myself of all the stuff I still need to add before I'm done. The differences between this render and the last one are that I added the spinner, the plunger, and the top gate brackets.
I need to clean up the black outlines on the playfield light inserts, and put screws and nuts all over the place, as well as the score and price cards on the ball return cover.

I did some work on the backglass image in Photoshop. This is sorta what the game looks like when you play it. (When I finish it , that is.)

Thanks, stan!
I re-drew the playfield. The backglass elements are from a hi-res picture of an actual backglass, with various elements cut out, and re-arranged to "artistically" frame the table. :D

You mean the "rack" on the girl in pink? ;)
Or the one on the table.....
The one on the table is how the real machine is layed out. (Dont blame me:) )

Heres the next WIP.
Made all the walls and posts that the ball contacts in the Visual Pinball program. I put the backglass image into a decal that covers the whole background. Then when I place walls, I set them to "Can Drop", which makes them visible on top of the decal. When I am done with them, I will set them to not be droppable, and they will disappear, but still influence the ball.

Well, the table is finished. If you are interested in Visual Pinball, you can download this table from my site...
www.scapinosvpins.com
You will need to download and install Visual Pinball and VPMame and the tables ROM image, if you havnt done so allready, to play this table.
All that stuff can be downloaded from...

Heres the final picture...
