I know the world needs another car render like it needs a hole in the ozone but having acquired the Polytools I decided to set myself a project to learn them and a car was the obvious choice. So I plumped for my favourite - the Lamborghini Countach. Maybe it was a little ambitious for a first try but there's nothing like jumping in at the deep end and learning from plenty of mistakes! But at least at the conclusion I should know my way around the new tools quite well. Well, that's the theory anyway.

I thought some of you might be interested to watch the pain and suffering of someone learning new tools so will share the progress rather than just a finished article. Of course, if anyone has any suggestions for better ways to do things or any pitfalls I might encounter before I hit them, they'd be most appreciated!

Anyway, heres the basic shape fleshed out after a couple of evenings playing with the Polytools (I know the doors need fixing!). Still much to do but it's a start (and not a drop of clay in sight!!)....

cool, looks great Witch!
At first look I thought it's the chassis from a speedboat :)
Personally I can't see any failures (just the sharp corner at the front of the roof car, but guess it's a piece of the car which isn't final yet), you make it great!

 Not clay? ;)

Very different from your usual work but I like it !

Also like the choise of car ! One of my favourites... *closes eyes, starting to remember the old MiamiVice series* ;)

I tried to make a Countach in the ancient Amiga days, in some obscure coordinate based 3d software... but that didn't go to well

Thanks guys! Stuck on the wheel arches at the mo but I will not be beaten! :)

Shike: Maybe I'll make a clay one later, just for the hell of it!!! :) In Miami Vice Crockett drove the ugly Ferrari Testarossa <spits> not the lovely Lamborghini !!!

Thanks for the link, for some reason I get a 404 error on the company network.. I'll have to see if I can remote into our extranet and try to access it from there...

hate to correct you, but I think you'll find there was a countach in Miami Vice (the series), both white and black. showing my age now. anyway, your model is looking very good. don't get carried away with detail unitl you get the shape completed though

Looking good Kate. Definitely a break from your usual style but it looks like you've got it well under control.

After several aborted attempts the wheel arches and front bumper/valance are starting to take shape. Going to fix the bit of creasing happening on the front wing next and then 'cut' the holes for the wheels. This is a different way of modelling to what I'm used to but I'm really enjoying it!

Now, Miami Vice, I hate to sound like an anorak but I'm pretty sure you'll find Crockett started off with a black Daytona (which was actually a kit car) which got destroyed and was replaced with a white Testarossa. I'm sure I'd remember a Lambo! :) Anyway... pic...

Wow Kate! This is way different to your usual work. I'm impressed.

And no wonder you're so popular here - not only can you talk 3d with the boys here you can talk cars too!

I can't wait to see this finished - I'm picturing this car zooming down a moonlit road with a familiar white face behind the wheel, feathers flapping in the breeze, a manic grin on the beak....

an‧o‧rak [an-uh-rak, ah-nuh-rahk]

–noun

1. a hooded pullover jacket originally made of fur and worn in the arctic, now made of any weather-resistant fabric.

2. a jacket patterned after this, made of any weather-resistant material and worn widely.

You don't sound anything like a jacket.

Nice progress on the car!

We Austrians wear it as well.

Yep, nice progress, polytools seem to work well. Before I saw Vizu's cars, made poly by poly, I always thought it takes ages to model a car (not because Vizu's cars are bad ;) ).

Keep it coming.

Amazing! We the only country that say that? No way! Anyway, I think you'll find that the car was infact a dodgem with racing strips to represent speed, duh! Just showing my own age... I'm still young enough to get away with being immature :)

I must say I also thought the first image of the car was a cool looking speed-boat, and was a little disappointed, lol. Still, it is pretty cool! How are those wheels coming along? that's the beauty of doing everything in low-poly... all you need are textured cylinders :p

I'd love to see someone make a highly detailed object, then make a 4 second animation of just the camera panning around it! I swear half the people who win the image gallery can now just turn on HDRI and enter the animation gallery with the same work :)

Anyway, this is cool stuff, and you have my vote for making a clay version of it ;)

Here in the UK, 'Anarok' is also used as a slang term to describe someone who is geeky about a given subject. It derives from the quintessential image of a trainspotter.

not only can you talk 3d with the boys here you can talk cars too!

Thanks Wiz! Before I gave it all up to become a professional magician I'd only ever worked in the car industry so have a bit more grounding in all things automobile than the average girlie.

Zeipher - I'm leaving the wheels 'til last. Several methods are available to make them and I haven't decided which to opt for yet.

Anyway, that's enough banter, on with the many air intakes...

Professional magician? Or musician?
I still don't get the anorak reference, I'll just have to take your word for it.
Wasn't 'Trainspotting' a movie featuring filthy restrooms?
Not sure where I'm heading with this, but the car looks good so far.

Nice progress !

Took a quick glance at polytools and it looks like a great tool !

Hm, wonder if it would work when ts7.x is finished or if the native tools can do the same thing...think I'll wait abit before buying it

I couldn't actually remember the good guys driving the Lambo, but was pretty sure that some bad guys did....

...however, here's a quote from another "anorak" I found when googling:

"Sadly it did jump when in an episode where they blew up Sonny's Maserati. Best car on a TV Show then, and they replaced it with a white Lamborghini. Black to white I just didn't like it"

Obviously he was slightly insane since he preferred the Maserati ;)

Though in the same forum I saw someone else saying that it wasn't a Lambo but a Ferrari...so I'll stick

to my first feeling that Lambos where used by bad guys...?

Right click the Object Selection icon to open the Object Info window. In there are counters for # vertices and # faces (or polys).

right click at the object tool (the white arrow) opens the object info box and at the bottom is a list with #vertices and faces. Faces is the polycount.
edit: :D hehe Bobbins was faster

... the model looks fantastic!
Have you modeled the pieces individually. Means can you open the doors etc.?

Thanks Bobbins & Parva. I knew about that bit but wondered if there was a way to tell overall without having to add up all the individual bits. A quick play revealed that I can ctrl-drag to select everything and get the answer without having to go nuts with the glue tool!! I've learnt something else as well now! Thanks guys.

Sure have! Headlamp pods, boot, bonnet, engine cover and doors all open

Something else: when no object is selected (can use spacebar to deselect) the object properties shows the vertice and face count for the entire scene.

Thanks to Bobbins and Parva I can now answer MadMouse's question! In it's current state, with both halves of the car loaded, the face count (before SDS) currently stands at 16038.

Talking of it's current state, here it is! Still plenty to do (including re-doing the exhaust heat shield cos this one is rubbish!) and then it's onto those wheels! Anyway, here's the pics...

have I already said that it looks fantastic? :D Really? OK so again... it looks fantastic :) I'm excited to see which wheels it will get...
I couldn't spend enough money to buy this car but wouldn't it be great if a 3D printer could print that as real object? Must be a large printer but anyway we could produce our own cars and houses and ... :D

I shall pretend I never heard that! :)

Parva: which wheels? Countach wheels! Talking of which...

...here they are! These have been the biggest headache to do! As they're not of the 'spoke' variety SDS was creating some nasty pinches around the holes. After many hours and several methods I hit on a 'workaround' and knocked these out in a matter of minutes! Easy when you know how! :) Now I gotta figure out how to make the tyres but for now, here's the front and back wheels.
