After my last two projects being so mechanical (warehouse mech & light bulb people) I thought it was high time for something a bit more organic so let me introduce my new distraction......Er.....a Penguin.
I've got a lovely week off work next week so expect some regular updates. Here's how it started life:-
Comments and crits are, as always, most welcome. |

Well it looks like you're of to a flying start! Oh wait.... penguins don't fly! Still, knowing how you love to get the small details right I'm sure this is going to be another Madmouse Masterpiece.
I don't know what it is about penguins but they always seem so cool. Not coz they live in the Antarctic but because they always look so well dressed! |

I agree with Wiz: looks like you are off to a good start!
The only thing I would point out, which you may be well aware of, are a few triangles around the eyes. I think in this area specifically (since eyes are usually a focal point for the viewer) you'll want to keep quads so that the SDS will look smooth and not have any 'pinching' of the mesh. ...however, it's not always possible to completely eliminate triangles, and in the end it may not bee too very visible. Just a tip / comment.
But yeah, this is looking good! Are you planning to animate him? (Looking forward to maybe seeing a flying penguin. ;) ) |

Thanks Stephen.
Well given that you made a world on a disc on the back of 4 elephants on the back of a giant turtle flying through space I'm sure you'll be able to do something to make it so that penguins CAN fly but can you make it so that flies can penguin? :D (Sorry mate it's getting late here!

Sorry Wizard but I think flies landed on your joke;) ...I think you layed a Penguin egg!
Yea you have some triangulation going on and something not quite right around his/her throat section. Did you model strictly using 6.5/7.11 TS ? If so what tools did you use when you modeled the penguin against the image?
I like what you have so far and looks like a fun project!
There is another Penguin movie coming out this year and the previews looked amazing. They looked very real. |

Thanks Guys,
@ Frank I'm not to worried about the eyes because they will be mostly covered in the final image. All will be revealed as the project progresses ;) No animation planned BTW
@ Steinie Moddeled in TS7.11. It started life as a cylinder and was extruded up and down from the middle with each segment resized to match the reference image as I went. HTH
