Another of my many works in progress. May be worthwhile keeping an eye on it.

If someone can tell me who this is, I must be getting there.

Don't worry about the squarish head and lack of ears, I still have much to do.

Watch this space!

It's Rolf Harris!

Err, obviously it isn't, but for those who know Rolf (Brits like me, most likely), he always started off making a drawing with just a few seemingly random lines, and always asked "Do you know what it is yet?" in that Australian accent as the picture developed. And the thread title made me think of that.

Anyway, I don't know yet, but I am very bad with faces anyway so that is nothing to do with the model and more to do with the observer. It's that bald headed woman from the first Star Trek movie maybe? ;)

Thanks for sharing though, looking forward to seeing it progress, and seeing when someone gets it right :)

Thanks!

Tom

Before I read Tom's post, I was about to say it was the Borg Queen, as portrayed by Alice Krige.

But the lady from the first one isn't a bad guess either! :)

Michelle Pfeiffer?

Worth a guess! Especially as Tom already nicked the Rolf gag! How about you paint it blue and then it could be one of the cast of Blue Man Group? :) (THE funniest show I have ever seen in a theatre).

Who ever it turns out to be it's a fantastic start.

Well I've had my faith restored in my modelling. Congrats Splinters, it is the gorgeous Ms. Theron, and will hopefully look more like her once completed. Worked a bit more on the nose, mouth and ears today, as I wasn't happy, but it's clear that the basic bone structure was enough for recognition.

Tom, I grew up wathing Rolf Harris, a great inspriation to any budding artist, and highly underrated if you've seen his recent work adopting the styles of old masters. Also, we'd never have heard of a diggerridoo (apologies for the spelling) or a xylophone without him.

Cheers

Chris

ah man! I guess I was too slow on the draw, as they say in the Old West...

That really does look distinctively like Charlize Theron. Wicked!

Keep it up and looking forward to seeing more,

BTW... are you using polys or nurbs? Or another technique?

Awesome modelling!! The next interesting parts will be the ears... can't wait to see how you tackle those.

I wonder how many hours you worked on this piece.

Oh, and I must confess, I didn't recognize her at all, but I'd ask her out on a date any day. :D

Having Googled Charlize Theron to find out who she is and what she looks like I can now see it's quite an impressive likeness!

same with me..the likeness didn't click for me until I saw a picture of her but this is more because she is gray and bald than any flaws in the model.

You've captured the lines of her face very well and the only thing that stuck out for me is that I think her chin is a little sharper\pointed than you've got it. Great job!

Unless you are going for her character in Monster in which case you are way off :)

Cheers all,

here's a slight update. Changes to nose, mouth and eyes, a wee bit at a time, and I've also started on the ears (hate the ears).

Modelled using polys and SDS (1 level). had to get a lot of reference material, so spent days (sigh) staring at her lovely face on google myself.

Hours of work so, far, and hours, days, months to go. Might have to model up some hair to make her look right, as I find it quite difficult myself sometimes to see the likeness, from certain angles.

Does anyone happen to have some 3d hairdos lying around?(save me the time).

Certainly makes a change from interior design, a lot more challenging to get right.

Very nice, Charlize Theron certainly looks killer. And you're on a good way to resemble that. Hair will be difficult, but I hope you keep on working on it.

Btw. are you going to show us a wire?

I sort of agreed with an unregistered guest's suggestion that it was Nicole Kidman :)

Sweet work no matter who it is modeled after

Looking really good Chris! Modeling a head is hard enough, making it look like somebody is about has difficult as it gets. Keep it coming. :)

The more things change the more they stay the same ... or something like that.

Some new names I don't know yet, but MadMouse and Spacekdet are silly as ever; a lot of my stuff would have gone unfinished without Délé's kind and supportive comments and chrisj is an inspiration as usual. Still trying to find Mr. Logan:confused:

I'll be browsing around the forums for a few days to bring myself back up to speed. I'll probably make a few comments but NOTHING POLITICAL, I promise!:D

chrisj: really nice model! I haven't worked with SDS because it always slowed my system down too much. New system now; new things to learn. I'll be watching your progress; learning!

Paul

... by the way, she DOES look like Sigourney Weaver!

Hello again Paul, lot of old and new faces around these days for sure. no idea where mr. logan is, but I tend to disappear periodically as well.

Not sure about the Sigourney weaver resnemblence, but I think that it's difficult to distinguish smooth featured faces. at this stage the model is based on only two elevations from reference material, and for that reason, many people look alike if they have good bone structure and well proportioned features. you really need to model from 3 elevations to get the exact curvature of the cheeks, and other major features. texture also has a major effect. still tweaking the nose today, but may post update later.

Once you get the hang of SDS, you'll never look back, it's like sculpture.

latest update.

significant amount of tweaking applied to all areas. added some hair for effect (think it's a poser object I found for free). I'll add better hair once I'm happy about the rest of the model

still a long way to go, but the basic structure is now more accurate.

Thought I knew a lot about facial bone structure, but trying to copy a real person, rather than generic heads, has shown me just how much it changes from person to person.

You really picked the biggest challenge to recreate a real living person. The slightest diversion from the original will be noticed.

I see you changed the model quite a bit, the cheek bones seem to be different now. The eyes should be bigger IMO, just don't look like the gorgeous eyes I remember from Charlize.

Maybe you could go for the hairstyle from AeonFlux, should be much easier to realize with polygons. Eyebrows could be painted on the face texture
