:) Hi, I like to carve things from wood in my spare time and a couple of years ago I found an amazing piece of wood. I think it was birch but due to water and the sun it was miss colored. It had darken except for long streaks which were light and there were almost black streaks from rot. From this I carved a spoon.

Here is the ts version of it. I have not completed the textures on the spoon

I'm grateful for every tip and suggestion you can give me.:)

Hey, welcome to the WIP ! :D

The subdivision spoon turned out great and it's wood-material looks really good!

Also like the board it's sitting on, very nicely textured :) ...might be a little dark though..it's hard to see the spoon shadow.

(only saying that since I'm currently trying to fix some of my own textures that are too dark.)

The spoon's texture looks like it has some kind of SSS effect. Not too bad. I don't really know how birch is supposed to look, may be you should lighten it up a bit. Could also be the lighting that tints it redish.

I've been taught by the master:D

thank you, I have followed your advice and lightened it. I chosen to go for a gray tone. to make it look whether bitten.

I'm quite new using TS but I'm guessing that SSS means sub surface scattering. the red light is caused by a "fireplace"-light.

Here is the new render

In the picture below I have turned off every light except the red one (it's an area light). I'm a bit confused by the several shadow edges. It is a raytraced shadow and i think there should only be one. there is the same effect produced by the key light. Any ideas?

Increase the subdivision of the area light, right click on the light to get the AreaLight Options.

I usually use the same value for min max...mostly 1, since I like slow renders ;)

Looks great with the latest fixes! :D

When using area lights, skylights or IBL, the shadow quality depends on the min. - max. subdivision in the light options.

Thanks, Shike and Graysho for the tips about the light.

Here is the new pic. There seems to be a displacement in the space-time continuum (look under the spoon):D

You're welcome, and you're getting there! That looks very good! :D

For the bump/tex misalignment, make sure you check all textures on all material layers that they have the same UV repeats and offset.

Thanks Shike I've fixed it now. No new pics though, I'm struggling with a knife blade.

Is it possible to use a symbiont material as a second layer when I create a multiple layered material? Every time i add the symbiont material every previous layer is destroyed.

OK, I've been working on the knife.

I'm not really satisfied with the Blade material. The color of the blade looks rather dull. There is a surface (not seen here) that is reflected in the knife. to make the reflection more realistic I have blurred that surface texture, perhaps that is whats wrong.

Here is the material settings.

I would really appreciate any thoughts or pointers.

The knife looks great ! Good to see that you avoided 100% reflectivity :D

Try making the handle abit dirty to make it match the blade.

Simbiont material should be possible to use, but you might run into problems with layered materials if you try to use different simbionts on different layers.

You can test the limitations by for example using simbiont only on the first layer(I think I've used this method)...then only on second...test changing abit and see if and when it fails.

Since you only show one of the material layers, it's hard to suggest anyting about it, but since it looks ok...it might not be needed :)

Thanks. the spoon and the knife handle has just simple wood textures. I will start working om them soon.

Here is the latest render. As you can se I have forgott to change the texture on the bord to the left and I have used the wrong UV mapping on the knife handle. I will correct that.

There is still somthing wrong with two of the ligths. There are multiple lines in the shadow on the spoon. As you can se I have changed the subdiv level to 1. Is there anything else that I have to do?

Try playing around with the size of the area light(s)- the bigger the area light the more 'virtual lights' it creates- bigger makes it brighter but can also create unwanted shadowing. You can also use a scaled down IBL (with 'Show Environment' unchecked) as an area light.

Thank you, I appreciate you reply. I will try this.

Are those 'area light options' something new in TS6? I can't seem to find them in 5.1....

Not sure, but try right clicking on the 'Toggle shadowcasting by current light' icon. Be sure you're using an area, not a projector light- I mix them up all the time.

<edit> just checked again-the area light options panel pops up when I create or select an area light, or when I toggle shadows on or off. Your mileage may vary.

I have tried your idea and it worked just fine. Thanks again.

This render has only the red light turned on.

aah, I lost the momentum. I will try to find it again. I guess its easy to calculate my focus span.:D Now I'm only looking at RC cars. curse this acquisitiveness. i hope that isn't a strange word i found it in Internet for a translated Swedish word.

Yeah, I was kinda worried when you talked about RC cars...but since I havn't done anything in 2 weeks I can't blame you ;)
