Hello All,
This is my first post. In an effort to learn more about modeling I crated these 5 legos.
I have tried to recreate these five legos as close as possible to the real thing. I didn't include numbers and words that were imprinted inside the lego.
I did have a couple of difficulties.
First, I was never able to figure out how to glue the propeller lego together so that I could access the yellow part and the propeller, as one object to adjust the position. I can use the hierarchy to get to different parts but I was trying to group them in such a way to make it easy to change it's position.
Second, I had trouble with layers. Sometimes an object on a layer would be visible but I couldn't select it. I was able to work around this by draging that layer on to another one to combine them.
Third, I was never able to make the propeller the exact shape I wanted. I wanted each blade to bulge a little around the middle and I could get it to ever look good.
If you want to look at the models they are on my website. www.mooseware.com under projects.
Please feel free to give suggestions and guidance.
Cheers

Nice ! Wakes up sentimental memories of my lego collection :D
Check if the layer icon is yellow, that means "unpickable".
Click on the layer until it's green, then the objects are selectable again.
If you glue together the blades, blue and yellow thing with "Glue as sibling" : Lets call it "propellerpackage".
Then glue the other things with "Glue as sibling" : Lets call it "Engine"
Then Glue "propellerpackage" and "Engine" together with "Glue as child"
I think that's what you're after ? |

to get the axis in center of glued object like your prop..first select the cylinder [in my image] and glue to it..group axis is create from first selected object.. if I start with a prop blade the axis is in the wrong place
for your layer issue ..if you glued two objects togeather that are on different layers that happens, when one is hidden or locked ..or if the layer you are trying to work in is locked.. |

Ah, Stan got a point about glued objects in different layers...didn't know that.
If you're up to it you might look up Subdivision in the manual. It's my favourite tool to create soft smooth shapes...like a bulging propeller ;) |

Thank you Shike and Stan for the feed back.
I have another questions.
Stan, I did glue each part of the propeller together as you described. In fact I glue the red part together, the yellow part together, and the propeller together originally in the manner you described.
I also did the following. I glued the yellow section to the propeller. Then I glued the red section to the yellow/propeller combination. Before I glued them together I could select the yellow section and the propeller and cause the propeller to move with the yellow section. Then by selecting just the propeller I could make it spin. Once I glued them together and tried to use the hierarchy I could no longer access just the propeller.
Do they need to be in the same layer when you glue them together for this to work?

if all layers used are unlocked..it should work..I thought you just had the prop glued togeather..maybe it need not be glue to the yellow part..
which version of truespace are you using..because in ts6.6 and earlier you can glue up complex groups..you need to use the up/down arrows and left/ right ones on keyboard to get to every object in multi level groups..
also you can manually move the group axis via the axis tool |

Thank you again for all of the help.
The arrow keys were in deed the trick. One other thing that helped a lot was, for the first time, I named parts of my model, things like propeller!
Cheers

p.s. I'm using TrueSpace 6.6 |
