Hey guys. Mad Mouse got me all inspired, so I'd thought I'd have a go at making something nearly a quarter as good. Lol. I'm rather impatient when it comes to rendering, so I always try to keep my objects low polys. Anyway, this is to be animated, so please bare that in mind when/if suggesting new features. The shoulder joint is something I'm not too keen on at the moment... and I've given him a chain saw type hand so that I can show off a little motion-blur. No idea what kind of legs to give him, nor what that weapon above his head does... oh, and his left arm too...

Seeing as I started only a few hours ago, I'd say I'm proud... even if it isn't anything to be scared of on a battlefield yet. Lol.

Anyway, crits and comments welcome.

Andy

Wow... never realised how awful the wireframe renderer is. This is a hidden line render. The other one gave it half a dozen random lines.

Looking good Andy. just one question..... Where do the forks fit on :jumpy:

Forks? Hmmm... I suppose they could be used as a weapon! As it stands, this character, with HDRI, takes around 20 seconds to render. Abit worrying knowing that I'm only half way done and need to build up the scene around them. Maybe yours and mine could have a little battle one it's done. lol.

This is cool ! :)

Always loved mech's and big robots, keep it up !

Yeah, it would be fun to see the WareHouseMech and the BattleMech fight. :D

Awwwwww...!!! No idea what happened... but I lost all my texture work. My previous back up has only colours. Right... well I guess all I can do is start again.

Bummer about the textures Andy. But when similar has happened to me the next set of textures are always better so maybe its a blessing in disguise (not that there was anything wrong with your originals BTW;) )

I can't help feeling that the chainsaw is out of scale, surely it should be much, much bigger

Lol! I totally agree. That was the first thing I made as a motion blur test, and the rest of the Mech was built from there.. I have made it extendable, so I could pull it out further and increase its size.

Anyone got any ideas for legs? I'm 'stumped' on this one :D

andyAdd some short, tiny legs:p They always seem to make the rest of the body appear massive.

Cool mech. This has some really interesting features - I particularly like the shoulder joint. It has a really original look to it though I can't help thinking the two curved bars that connect to the mechs head/body look a little lightweight - particularly if you're gonna make the chainsaw bigger.

Give us more! :D

Ok. Just spent a short time on the legs. I wanted this Mech to be able to move rather fast over a large majority of object and terrain. At first I though tread, but didn't like the look of it, so decides to go for spheres. The legs can pivot around 45 degrees and can increase the mech's size greatly when extended. I can't figure out how to use tS's IK joints for the life of me (yet I found 3.2's easy), so I'm connecting it with 'glue as child' connections. I'm pretty happy with it so far... but hate his 'feet'. I might make them bigger, but let me know what you guys think first. Oh, and I increased the size of his saw :D

Bah! For some reason Jpg size are now 620 X 280, so It might look little weird... I wonder why it wasn't accepting it before.

Surely that's a mistake??? That's not even fitting with aspect! 640 X 480 I could understand! Are monitors expected to all be wide-screen nowadays or something?

It's looking good Zeipher, is this going to be the first of many mechs in your animation?

I can just imagine a sand dune scene with about 20 of them (all slightly different) jumping down over one of the dunes.

This is the enemy mech. A sand dune scene would be an interesting idea, but I tend to enjoy destruction too much :D I was thinking of a city scene, where two mechs meet and fight each other. Still trying to decide how to design the good guy... I want him to look more humanoid. The image size problem was mine, not Caligari's. It was the file's size, not the image that was the problem. All fixed now though. This is rendered without HDRI. It renders in about 7 seconds... so I may consider that rather than HDRI... we'll see though.

I'm truely stumped on the Mech #2 though... so if anyone has any suggestions or reference pics then that would be great, and also, if there's nothing wrong with this one, I'll move it over and start the next one.

Hey Hemulin, seeing as it renders faster without HDRI I may be patience enough to try out a few more rather than the 1 on 1 I was aiming at

Simple demo test to show what I mean it to do. The file sizer was TINY! I expected it bigger, so I only rendered 100 frames. Anyway, this should be a fun toy to play with.

Enjoy.

Nice animation Zeipher, if you're looking for humanoid maybe you and Shike should team up...TriBeast (and humanoid rider) vs Mech....:D

There we go. I think I'm more or less done with this one. Anyone able to work ts's IK joints? I had to do this by gluing the pieces together. Shame, cus although it's easier to manage, it's more difficult to use.

This only took a few minutes to anaimate, so don't expect something great :)

Yeah, this is what I was waiting for ! Really nice and I like the way the legs unfolded to the top position ! :D

Although...rises up, looking menacing...but when you lowered it down in the end...it sorta looks like Bambi on ice. ;)

Lol! How true! It won't be doing that in my animation, I just wanted to show what else it could do rather than simply reverse the animation.

so, do I get your seal of approval to count this as finished and move onto the next one? Any updates needed? :o

Yep, my approval you have :D

Now get back to work with the opponent... I want to see the big battle and the weaponry blasting into action ;)

Ok... I hate, and always have hated, blocky robots... so can anybody tell me why I made one? This is awful... I was almost too embarrassed to post it!!!

The strange thing was that it took a lot of time and effort... then ended up looking like a cheap sci-fi character. I think I'll follow the steps I took with the other Mech, and build the guys weapons first, then him around them. Shame... I ahte wasting my time :(

You could just replace the parts below the elbows with some kind of big weapons.

Having hands just complicates things when you're a robot going into battle ;)

And perhaps, between the shoulders where the two round things (eyes?) are, have a similar rocket launcher as the other one.

Would give him a better chance to survive agains the first one. :)

Nah, He's an ugly mess, so while he's off to the junk yard, I started a new one. Like I said, things seem to work out if I design a powerful weapon then build the Mech around it. I wonder what this one will turn out like...

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I'm only half done with this bad boy!

Maybe instead of rockets, the opponent should have a rail gun.

Me like! :D

Worn and rusty is a cool look, but then you might need to give the other one a bit more dirty textures ;)

A rail gun sounds like a cool idea. The one I'm modelling now is more of an automatic Shotgun. So a rail gun is just one UBER powerful lazer cannon, right? I might end up giving him a single rocket launcher on his back, but I also want this one to be able to fly. Still not figured that part out.

So no hands... :( Ah well, I guess that makes sense. Less room for destruction.

The first Mech is 'Brand New' in the animation, so it hasn't had time to get dirty. Don't worry though, both Mechs will be filthy by the end of the animation, as I intend on constantly altering the look of the textures. This Mech is quite an old one, but the good guys always have to have a disadvantage, don't they? :D

Is it RailGuns or GaussGuns that has the cool swirly bullet trails in movies and games?

Did play a couple of the Mechwarrior games... and I have faint memories of them having some sort of shotgun weapon..?

Flakcannons are also nice to have :)

You could still have hands, but individual fingers wouldn't be useful for a BIG bot. Maybe just a thumb and a solid fingerpiecethingy ;)

BTW

Is the movie Transformers released in US yet? Just saw a trailer for it and even if I didn't like the cartoon...I think I'll see this flick...Big robots and CGI...it's a mustsee for me :D
