I am replying to a post in another thread, but I decided this deserves to be a separate conversation.

I've been thinking about Polytools too....can you give a glowing review about why you like it so much? One thing specifically I've wondered is how well it Un-triangulates (to 'fix' converted NURBS objects)

Thanks (Taken from the "More Free Stuff at Primitive Itch! " thread)

I haven't used the un-tesselate/triangulate yet so I can't comment on that, but I will welcome anyone else to.

I'll give you a visual example of one of my favorite parts of the toolset, the Knife plugin.

Let's say I want to add an edge loop all the way around this object. To do so with native tools (Add Edges or Poly Draw functions) would mean having to rotate around the object, adding an edge at a time between the existing edges. This would take a bit of time and then I'd have to use secondary views to be sure it is straight.

With the Knife plugin (set to Knife instead of Divide Object, with Backside checked), can do it in one swift operation:

Another favorite from the PolyTools set is the Magnet tool. Some may think it's the same as using standard Deformation but it's not. You can move single points or many at a time, and even adjust the smoothing after the point has been moved.

I've attached another example of it in action.

The Edge Extrude is very handy as well. You can start out with a single-sided plane and, using that tool, wind up with a car eventually. Ok, I haven't done it myself but I know it can be done (right, Viz?).

I would like others to chime in on why they like PolyTools, which specific tools they use, and how. Vizu, TheWitch, anybody...

I just have the demo, but edge extrude is a really neat function, as well as the bridge tools.

Thanks for the info so far Frank.. I like the ones I've played with in the demo and I've found the monsterknife (form Monster toolkit) to be very useful so I know what you mean.

Just as another method (see my vid below), you could also use the native Polygon Slice tool (in conjunction with 'add edge' or 'slice by selected line') to very quickly add an edge loop; with the added bonus that it leaves the loop selected.

Does the edge extrude cause any grief with non-coplanar faces etc?

Chester ! there are so many reasons for Polytools, to many to tell you here but what i know is that i wouldnt use Truespace without Polytools.

Edge extrude, select edge loop for divide loop. Bridge faces to get a hole in a object (i know all is possible in TS too ´but only with hard work)

I use TS since Vrersion 1 and bought every release but never i have do a model in Poly by Poly without Polytools (i think it is impossible without polytools)

You can download or see many Poly by poly tutorials, written for max or maya or what else ... and you can do the same way in TS with polytools.

as example ! http://www.lacreme.de/index.php?sektion=uebersicht

Try this without Polytools ;)

I have no idea what is youre target to do in Truespace but when you want make Cars or robots or ... you will need Polytools.

as example ...

You can see in my wip gallery ( http://www.vizualizer.de/Images ) many projects and okay ! most of them is possible without Polytools but for some work i won´t miss it :)

Polytools is my new favourite toy! I must admit, I never understood the appeal, having been raised on box modelling. After much badgering from Vizu and some others I downloaded the demo some time ago and only recently got a chance to have a play. Golly, was I wrong! I was soon hooked and sprang for the full version. Twenty dollars very well spent! (especially with the exchange rate at the mo!).

In two days I have almost finished modelling something that I've always wanted to make and have never been able to from tS SE to my current 6.6! That's probably the best recommendation I can give it!! Mostly using the edge extrude and bridge and weld tools. It's no good for making stuff like my Clay models, standard tS box modelling is the way to go for that, but it's super useful for cars and the like.

I hope to post some WIP's of what I'm currently doing in the next few days to back all this up!!

:)

:) I hadn't even used it myself before, as it's player only, but I remembered reading about it & had a quick look & there it was, on the Player PE toolbar. I'm not surprised you forgot about it though, probably too busy playing with 7.5. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/jealous.gif

True, but as I have tS7 & the Monster Toolkit I'm not that desperate for them. Still, at £11.60-ish [~£10.60 + £1 foreign currency charge from my bank] I may give them a go at some point.

Don´t mess the Playersided tools with the good old Modeler side.

The Player isn´t finished and for my taste, just a viewer, not more.

we will waiting for 7.5 to see what is possible in TS without any plugInns and so long i won´t miss Polytools.

I fully agree, the model side is still the way to go. I own the poly tools from CKGF and love them. I often find myself in tS 6.6 about 90% of the modeling I do is there, and the poly tools rock!(I'm guessing 7.5 will change that, hopefully)

-I've also noticed the loop(slice/divide) never goes the direction I anticipate(path of least resistance) in player.
