I roamed around for a couple of hours.

Not real impressed, as it was impossible to talk to anyone, by far to many people!

I saw Roman, I wanted to say hi but he was busy and I wanted to make the rounds.

I wish there were more reps on the floor reaching out and greeting people.

What little staff was available were mobbed and I’m not willing to stand around for anyone for very long.

People were standing in 15 minute lines to get hats! Do you have no pride?

Also, I felt like I needed to be a 3D pro, in the business for years and talk the lingo for anyone to pay attention.

I'm single, no kids, lots of free time and my money is mine to spend...lesson? Don't judge a book by its cover.... PAY ATTENTION!

The last laugh is mine.

I will be there tomorrow and Thursday...working the booth (sort of).

But also taking pictures and video! Who knows maybe an on the floor interview or wrap up of the show! I have a decent wireless mic so we should be okay.

Roman and Tom's call as to what they may want and or use.

PWL,
Are you going back tomorrow? I think it will settle down later. If you do go back can you update us? Thanks for the report.

One thing I notice here is there are more and more people registering so this place is going to be busy soon! I'm sure the 4.3 deal is taking off and I also hope 7.11 and 7.5 is a hit. That would help all of us in the long run.

Humdinger, can you post pictures here?

If I go back do you want me to get you a Lightwave cap?

You can have it for only $497.99

How many can I put you down for?

And then when all the trueServe customers come, it'll be the rave! Heck...bring in the gameSpacers and the jewelSpacers too while we're at it. The more the merrier! iSpace too. More products means more customers! Six months down the road maybe they'll reveal trueBlackberry: the first 3D modeler for a portable phone... and trueMarlboro would allow us to boolean our smoke rings...trueHat can manipulate 3D space using neurological patterns....

Seriously, I wish trueSpace 7.5 the best and much success - I love the direction it's going. I just hope to see it soon. Seeing trueServe left a lump in my throat as I looked through the ad for 7.1's next gen animation features along with VRay's analytical motion blur...it's like one of those ancient Japanese poems, where I have both, yet I have neither.

 I know...they're on their way.

It actually turned out to be a rather busy day at the booth but was able to grab some images. Having alot of fun as well as a very interesting time. Last night saw the electronics show (animations in 2d and 3d), some are very impressive to say the least. Anyways here are some images:

1st - Good old Boston

2nd - Entrace to Convention center, notice it is rather empty well I was there 3 hours before the show eagerly awaiting :o .

3rd - Roman

4th - Thomas in action with Roman demostrating shared space (should have captured both of them), laptop to the right is acting as a shared space server.

5th - Took this picture, they where very willing to smile into camera (must be old buddies)

anyway..i took a bunch more..but not of the show if that's what people are lokking for...just caligari.

Also shot some short video.

All was just to test lighting etc. as I will also be there tomorrow.

(need to turn off the projector for some better 'crew' shots..also tell Roman to turn off his own personal 'motion blur'..hard to catch him not moving when he is talking about Truespace..lol)

I got some 360degree video of Tom and Noko..pretty cool.

We did have a good laugh as someone mentioned we should make a HDRI map of them at the show.

Humdinger, that second one with Tom is pretty funny! If you look to the left it says on the paplets "Get in position to win more new business.". :D LOL!

It was strange Chrono...

Sooooooooooooooo many schools and universities 'advertising' thier CGI programs/courses...that booth is one of those.

Never being to a Siggraph Expo before not sure if this is the norm..but it surprised me.

I would say close to 30% of the exhibitors were schools..maybe more...I may take a count tomorrow.

But when Lucas and Disney have large displays..you know there was some top notch stuff there..display design wise. Lots of comapnies there as well looking to hire new poeple...including those two as well as Blue Sky and Rtyhme and Hues.

Thanks for the updates noko and Humdinger. It's nice to be able to get a look at things. Those booths look smaller then I had imagined. Still, it's fantastic that they are getting groups of people stopping by and showing interest. :)

At first I thought yesterday would be a little bit slower but it picked up more then the previous day as time ticked away. First image is Humdinger taking charge :) (just kidding). Second image is overview early in morning of Siggraph. Third is the party afterwards at the Boston World Trade Center (don't let the few number of people there mislead you, this is a very early shot, later it was jammed packed such that I couldn't even find Roman or Thomas, since they just had to go back to the motel to freshen up before going to the party ;). ) Last shot is tone mapped HDRI image of Boston at night at the party.

HOO-YAH! Went to SigGraph today. VERY Inspirational! If you get the chance to go then by all means GO!

First and foremost may I say that it was a real pleasure to meet the Caligari team and supporting crew (Roman, Thomas, Noko, and Humdinger). Little did I know that Sir Thomas was very near where I lived previously (I lived in Dallas, he lived a couple hours east, in Longview but yep, still Texas :-D ).

Roman grilled me on what I liked and disliked about truespace 7 so far. I indicated I liked the improved look of the icons, but still had issues with finding the ones I needed. I also mentioned the trouble with the directx export. He acknowledged these issues, since it is important to him to know what his customers think about the product, both good and bad. He also reiterated the focus on the new animation tools, which are a total rewrite, with new technologies.

I also overheard a conversation involving a well-known production company expressing interest in Caligari's trueServe. GO CALIGARI GO!

There were a multitude of impressive demos all around. The Softimage booth was doing a demo on texture baking when I was there. They had a 14 million polygon Unreal character which they used to create a texture map, which was later attached to a much lower polygon character. Really cool on the big screen. Prior to that, they had a promo video for a game, I think called Hellgate London. The animation was very detailed, but it kinda bummed me out due to the graphic death of one of the heroines (basically having her heart ripped out by a giant demon). They had another promo video following, of several action heroes (Wolverine of X-Men, Spiderman, Captain America, and ????, Son of Oden). That was really cool. They were doing battle with some robot race that was trying to destroy this huge ship, all the while basically beating the sh*t out of them, all with comic-book humor.

LucasFilm was there, and HIRING, as was Pixar. Lots of people were in line for the Pixar demos, and to get a free Flaming Teapot. I think they are walking teapots. LucasFilm had several presentations on the technology behind Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as a Indiana Jones game. Pixar was doing a demonstration of the work behind Cars.

There were also companies that specialized in mocap. They had actors in the bodysuits doing dancing and such, and we could see a real time display of their movements. In addition, I spoke with a spokesperson for a company specializing in scalable render farms.

And books, books, books. OMG so many cool books!

There were also really cool demos at the open source platform. The Blender folks were there. They had some very interesting demos of water simulations, as well as Elephant's Dream.

On a personal note, I scored a free Caligari T-Shirt when I said hello to the crew. COOL! Plus, I signed up with Renderosity, and got instantly entered in a free drawing at 3:00 and won a copy of Shade 7 Designer LE. They had several products available, and called out several names. Mine was called after the pricier stuff was claimed but hey, I ain't complainin! Maybe my picture will be on the Renderosity website! I also got a groovy Siggraph coffee mug.

And Vinnie (humdinger): Thanks for the photo op with the Caligari guys! I really enjoyed talking with you, Thomas, Noko, and Roman! There's nothing like meeting fellow truespacers in person!

In summary it was a really exciting place to be. If you get a chance to go by all means do! And take lots of resumes and get there early! Some of the companies that are on the exhibition floor have free tickets available for the exhibition floor. So check out siggraph and see who's on the floor next year. You may be able to get some free tickets! I am hooked now, and this reinforces my determination to get into the industry!

Frootee, thanks for the briefing and your impression of Siggraph. It sounds like the Caligari group are a pleasant group of fellows. With your descriptions and everyone else's photos and video it kept us up to date.

I wish Caligari sold those tshirts on their website because I would like to buy one.

1... Tom and 'Frootee'

2... Noko and an 'amazed' viewer

3... Roman and a special 'VIP' (least I think that's what Roman said)

4... General

I must say the crowd was a bit 'rude' as I was always getting bumped around as I took most of my pics! Darn nerds! ;)

(I am sending the whole batch to Tom G. so he can decide what to show for anything 'official' regarding the show.)
