Hi all,

Don't forget that if you download and install truePlay, then click on Enter Shared Space, then you can join us for our first shared space chat tonight!

Roman Ormandy will be there, and myself, and Norm too. The invite is open to all, whether you are a tS user or not.

It will be taking place at 7pm PST. We plan on this being a regular event for the next few weeks at least.

trueSpace7 owners should join shared space using truePlay too, so that everyone ends up in the same place.

You can download truePlay here:

http://cart1.caligari.com/web/trueplaymainreg.aspx

You will need to register it to have access to the online shared space (to have a userid to sign in with). Registration is optional for using it offline, but required for online, so that you can have a username and password to sign in with (otherwise, you "wouldn't exist" in the shared space and that would be no good!).

You can read about truePlay in more detail here:

http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts7/Brochure/ts7intro.asp?SubCate=S2intro

Joining Shared Space is easy, just click on the icon in the bottom left of the two "eyeballs with hats" and presto! Once online, someone will be there to meet and greet you and show you to the meeting!

Chat will take place in the built-in text chat, so there is no need to be hooked up for Voice Over IP etc.

We hope to see you all there! No particular topic, this is intended as a fun and informal chance to just get together and talk.

Thanks!

Tom

Tom, Thanks for a really cool evening! I would repost this message for next weeks get together but mention that we should only use Trueplay to get in. Since TS7 is aimed at another server. I think you lost a few guest last night.

Also mention the meeting on your main Caligari page?

I also noticed that some of the "Regulars" were NOT there...shame on you ! If you want Truespace to be everything we talk about then show your support and join the fun.

The experience is something you have to witness firsthand. Completely differant then you are probably used to.

The whole time I was there I imagined a new way for a Teacher to instruct his students, an Engineering or Architectural firm with their clients, Landscapers showing a customer what their new landscape will look like and moving that Sequoia in real time! How about Planning boards, Lawyers, Doctors, I see business opportunities here for a startup company . The possibilities are probably endless.

So be part of the Evolution process and take TS to it's next level.

p.s. The only negative thing was Roman didn't supply drinks;)

Agreed, I'd have liked to be there too. 3am is far too early for most. Maybe I will try next week. Same time?

Agreed, I can't stay up until the early hours for a chat mid-week.

Can I suggest you alternate them so next week you do one at a sensible time for Europe, then the week after for Asia Pac?

maybe they could have one at 9 am california time. on saturdays.

too bad though for 56k modems..after awhile you get so far behind even the message system lags behind..that shouldn't happen.:( I can understand the 3d stuff lagging behind, not the message system...

Stan, it is possible to login into SS even with 56k modem, but you have to realize that the real transfer speed is only about 3Kb/s especially when the communication is dual way. Next factor is the server settings. The default update is set to 15 times/sec, so quite each the event is transfered and confirmed. However, we can make a test and build a special server for slow connections.

Vladimir..I have no problem getting to shared space..yes there are speed issues, but the main one is the message system lags far behind..it is based on windows messenger so it shouldn't have this issue..people had left the space and their messages were still appearing..my responses were way out of sync with the others..

That's an interesting question from Stan - if the 3D scene lags, can we still prevent the chat from lagging? I don't know the answer, but it would be good if possible - so even if the 3D scene is 12 minutes out of date, the chat is at least still in sync. A good question, one for the developers :)

It was great fun getting to meet up! Next week we will be meeting up with those who want to use Skype too, we hope, so voice chat will be possible. It did remind me of one of the ways I got started in tS, which was the IRC weekly chats, those were fun and this brought back memories of that - only now in 3D! That was cool :)

As for the timing for other parts of the world, this is a difficult one. 3pm on a weekday, well a lot of people could be at work and work may well frown on a 2 hour chat (even if someone was testing out shared space for business use, that still might seem a little odd!). Also it would be very hard for me, for instance, on most days since I too am at work! The same could be said for Roman and other Caligari staff too of course - 2 hours out of a work day is a lot to find. That makes 2pm PST on a Friday really hard, or even downright impossibe, for me, for instance. Various Caligari things would grind to a halt as a result!

For weekends, the problem is that we all need some time off, and generally I am not available on weekends for instance. There are just sometimes my family needs to see me :)

However, it is a problem. I recall the tS weekly chats, where I was one of the few Europeans there (it was back when I lived in my home country of the UK, and I used to stay up til 2 or 3am for the meeting to start - now that's dedication... or madness... not sure...)

So, let us see what we can do. What might be possible is to schedule a European time, though it may not have me in it for instance, but it could have Paul Ashington in there as the Caligari rep.

I'll consult, and we'll see what we'll try!

For now though there is the "same time next week" and we'll see what else we can come up with.

Anyone who wants to join us on Skype should mail their Skype id to me at thomas@caligari.com so I can forward it to the relevant people here in preparation for next week.

Seems we did miss a few who came in under tS7 rather than tP. It's important to note that by default they connect to different servers. This is deliberate, since tS7 people can completely edit the worlds, and we wanted to retain some stability in those worlds for truePlay users. We also didn't want truePlay users finding a tS7 user accidentally moving a 12 Mb object into the scene and bringing everything to a halt while that downloaded, etc.

It is possible to reconfigure the server that tS7 connects too though, and for the chats I think it would be fun to have more people in there using tS7. So tS7 owners who want to connect up to the chat using tS7, please contact me and I can send out the appropriate instructions to change to the same server as the truePlay default, and then back to the trueSpace7 default after the chat.

Our apologies to anyone who missed the chat for that reason - I added it as a note to the forum posts here, on gameSpace forums, and to our beta testers, but many may not have seen that. I did catch Dele hanging around and looking lost on the tS7 server (I was in the tP server via tP and the tS7 server via tS7 at the same time, once I learned people were over there and looking for the meeting) and got him moved over. Apologies for anyone who we missed though.

I did think Norm's solar system at the end was cool (well, sun earth and moon, we didn't do the whole thing, though the same principles would have made that easily possible). Roman stretching it into some sort of egg shaped sun and earth was funny too, if a little weird looking :)

The breakable egg was fun too, I always think that is fun though.

Anyway, next time we hope to have even more people, and maybe even a few more tS7 users getting up to some tricks too!

More later!

Thanks,

Tom

I'd have no problem with it being that late on a friday personally... Weekends are designed for lie-ins for me. Why a thursday? Those who have work friday morning cannot even hope to stay up.

Would it also be possible to change the screen name also? Since it goes by the account my name was "donaldduck39" which I don't really mind but I would like to change it to my forum screen name or should I just create a new one with the screen name I want?

Another thing, I was there also(56k modem) and I couldn't find you guys/gals either by the time I logged in it seems everyone left but it could be due to moving to another server (oh well try again ) ;although, I saw dele and steinie, It would be really neat in the next version that there is some kinda server info about the amount of people or overall logged in members. It would be easier to find people, maybe even a buddy list?

Honestly, the time could be anytime (I stay up really late :))

Yeah, I got there a bit late but it was fun to hang out for while. :)

I agree with Asem, it would be nice if we could change our names to whatever we would like. My name is very similar so I'm sure most people can figure it out, but sometimes it is hard to know who's who. Plus when we created those usernames, we made them without thinking that people would see them. Perhaps some people would prefer a different name for chatting.

I also agree that it would be nice if we could include our upside down friends. Hopefully that can get worked out. :)

It was fun though. Next week I'll make it on time.

Not possible to have another name - the system requires customer information, which has to be based on your actual customer records. This is because in future you will be able to own space, which you may want to expand, may want to control who has access permission to come in, who has permission to edit things in there, you may want to buy or rent more space, and so on and so forth.

In order to have permissions etc, it has to tie in to our customer records. That means we have to use the name you registered with.

Those who download truePlay need to register to join us online, and that is for the same reason - they need to create a customer record for themselves. Existing customers though should use their existing customer ids, otherwise permissions etc will not be set properly.

You were on the tS7 server, rather than the tP server. Did you log in using tP? Logging in via tS7 would automatically take you to a different server (see earlier thread relating to that) and you wouldn't have seen everyone there.

The poll here on time I think is for the separate European meeting that we are thinking of having, rather than for moving the existing US one (at least, I think anyway!). Do let us know when your preferred time is for that!

Yes, Workshops is chosen location - I was playing doorman and was in the hall from 8.55 til 9.15 or so, and then made occasional forays out of the chat to see if anyone was lost in the entrance hall :)

But head to workshops, via truePlay and not trueSpace, and you should find us!

Hey Tom. Not impossible...just not programmed. Another field, display_name, could be added to the customer database. If a user has entered a desired name in the display_name filed then it is used, otherwise it uses the customer_name field. Should be just a few lines of code. You would still log in using your customer name but the display name is the one that shows up in TP.

But changing the customer database is NOT trivial - adding fields is not trivial when you have so many existing records on there. Then allowing access to change those fields, etc.

So any such solution is a ways off, sorry to say. It's not something that can be implemented quickly.

This means it will remain impossible for a user to change their name to something different for some time to come.

Hi. I read everything here and decided the 3D chat is the next big thing (especially since the #trueSpace channel is kind of empty these days :) ).

I installed trueSpace and tried to connect with my customer ID and password. Error: "Nick name is wrong or already exists".

I downloaded and installed truePlay and tried it - same thing.

I created a new customer ID and used that. It works! Still, I can only access the lobby. If I click on a shared space icon, it says "Your are not authorized to enter this Shared Space." I read there that I must register and activate my account. I go to the Registration and Activation tab, but it just asks me to create a new account and I don't want to create another one for nothing.

Oh, I found a sphere hidden under the ground and it takes me to the DemoRoom server.

Am I supposed to do something else if I want to access other shared spaces, or are those locked?

Hi

"Your are not authorized to enter this Shared Space."

this message will usually show if the account has not been activated by following the registration email confirmation .

if you get nick name is wrong or user exists then this can be an incorrect inputting of the user name or password.

the sphere is a secret so keep hush about it , it is a doorway to another dimension

you can email me paul@caligari.com if you need more help

So far, after a few days the poll is open, only 5 folks from Europe continent are voting on time. I figure that more than that number would be interested in attending so wish to ask you to vote for a time.

As for the initial meeting, I believe the "plan" is to have these meetings be successful for the users. If anyone interested in attending a meeting that is friendly to North American continent, please mention a day and time, if we get enough folks deciding on a time and day for that, we could change it as well. Remember pick a time and a day that works for you, as eventually it would be left to users to poplulate the space at the given time.

At some point in time, folks will indeed migrate to the trueChat scenario. Our aim is to get something started that eventually the users themselves can take over. At some point, users would be able to visit the designated area with trueSpace7 itself. For now, majority of users are accessing via truePlay. Beta testers have access to the space with trueSpace7 as well as Caligari staff.

"Nicknames" are important for me as well. I do not believe that it is impossible and wanted to let you know that from early on in the process I have been lobbying for just this feature. I personally will not rest until we have it. I believe we could have it such that a third textbox exist on login screen for your chozen nickname. Don't have to store it in database, just use your credentials to authorize you and tag you with the nickname you choose. There has to be an equitable solution that makes everyone involved content.

If you have not already installed Skype, "do it" is all I can say. Once you experience shared-space a'la Skype, you'll never go back. ...

It is all pretty loose at moment. Everyone who joins us in the scenario is a pioneer. In ten years time you will look back and either remember being involved or regret not being involved. I factor out complacency as it will remain a common denominator. So please don't be compacent! Join in and help to mold the fabric of next generation communications. No one has ever been at this point in history before. You just won't ever have this opportunity again.

Plus its fun

Has anyone here got it to work with MacAfee Firewall? I don't have MacAfee, but I do have a whole bunch of other firewall stuff up to stop me from doing anything. I reinstalled Skype and when I loaded it, my firewall Soft asked for permission and I gave it. Now it works perfectly. Sorry if that isn't any help, but it's the only thing I can think of next to waiting for them to reply to the email.
