Hi Folks.

Just wanted to let you know that the Dragon Quest movie is completed :). It's been a long task to bring to life (twelve years if you really want to count from the movies initial conception!!), but two days ago, when I finished post production and the final movie played, it was truly amazing to see it all in action :).

The Dragon Quest website documents the whole movie production process. Due to the size of the final movie, a low resolution version has had to be put up for viewing online (the high resolution version will ship on the KnightTrek Productions CD ROM), but the low resolution version is still great looking.

Dragon Quest was created with:

Dell Dimension 8400

Intel Pentium 4 - 3.4Ghz

2Gb RAM

Nvidia GeForce 6800 256Mb graphics card

TrueSpace 5.1

Particle Illusions 3.0

Paint Shop Pro 6.02

Photoshop Elements 3.0

I am extremely pleased with this movie.

I hope you enjoy it as much I do.

And you can be sure that now that I've been bitten by the movie project bug, it won't be long before I decide to undertake another 3D movie project.

Follow the link below and you can't miss the Dragon Quest website.

Enjoy :).

Hey just watched your movie and you did a great job! I liked the ending with them waving in front of the castle. This was obviously a huge effort and you should be proud.

Hey Paul, very well done! I enjoyed every minute of it. You did a great job scoring the video in a fitting manner. I love the birds, too, from where the hero and the damsel exit the cave.

I only criticise that there is no parental warning for those of us who do not expect to encounter such explicitly violent content. ;)

Fortunately, I can handle it...Bravo!

Great documentation as well.

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.

Emma, this movie was inspired by the music, as stated on the website. This was my first time actually creating a rendered movie to play in time with a piece of music. I had a host of sound effects lined up for the movie (see the Fire Test movie), but when I had the movie compiled to just the music, I loved it so much that I decided to abandon the sound effects and let the music tell the story.

JPSofCA, the birds are a very low polygon model because they are only used for flyby in that once scene. But yeah, I like the way they turned out too. As for the parental warning, well, it's not that violent a movie, is it? I think it's a good action flic ;).

As for TrueSpace 7...

Some day...

Some day...

Soon, hopefully :). LOL!

Thanks again for the feedback.

Nice job on this! Very good animation and modeling! :)

I'm more of a 1 artistic image guy, but animation looks like alot of fun.

I have a goal I hope to achieve one day,......making cartoons lol. My goail

since I was like 3 years old. I started drawing forEVER! And now I'm an

artist, but since the 3D world came abroad, looks I have some catching up

to do! I enjoyed the movie!

I was exaggerating about the violence...but if I were the FCC I'd have to slap a "PG" on it because of the blood. They're very strict over there! ;)

The FCC does not rate movies.

Excellent work Paul!

For your next project work on speeding up some of the motions. Some of the motions of the knight seem a tad slow. My favorite part was in the begining when the dragon awakens and how the dragon's eyes blink, this was animated really good. I liked the way your trees swayed. Your repeating grass texture is very noticable. A trick is to layer a fractal texture to help hide the repeating texture.

Your website states you had some speed issues with bump mapping. One way to speed up rendering is to turn on single sided rendering. Also, you can render the static scene without the knight, then render the knight without the background and then composite them together. Rendering only the animated knight will be much faster.

Congratulations on completing a project and good luck on your next one.

Oh yeah. And it's not the ESRB, they're video games...I forget who - my memory gets worse each year [my friends ask if I remember going to "?" and I can't, but I tell them I do just so they'll stop]...anyway, the movie-rating people.

Thanks for the additional feedback :).

Anunnaki, thanks for the pointers. Point taken on some of the knights slow movements. Trying to come up with story elements to fit with the length of the music was a challenge. Two scenes which spring to mind after reading your comments are the ones where the knight is being blasted. The knights movements here are a bit slow alright, but they work well. Once passed that, I think the movie moves a good pace from there because it was at that point that my timings were improving.

About the bump mapping, even rendering the knigh alone against a black background had TrueSpace moving at a crawl (perhaps TrueSpace 7 would be much faster over version 5. I'll do a test when I get my hands on version 7). There is a lot of bump mapping on the knight; his hair, his goatee, his armour... Suffice to say, it was a learning experience for me and it is something that I will be keeping in mind for future projects.

Thanks to everyone, both here and via email, who have sent feedback, really appreciate it :).
