There is a related thread open at the moment, but I didn't want to hijack the thread with a slightly different question as I am not looking for 3D paint but something simpler.

I am looking for a UV unrapper and have downloaded UV unwrapper Pro and Utimate unwrap 3D. The latter is more recently updated (2006) this year...compared to the ' Pro which seems to be 2004...

I know John Logan long veteran of UV unwrapper Pro strongly recommended it. But I note that Ultimate unwrap 3D supports Cob files natively (without using the LUUV plug in) and does what it calls pelt upwrapping for organic form it is also 10 dollars cheaper ( 3 features which would slide me in its direction) but usability is all, so I would value experienced users comments...

Thanks

I can't comment on 'ultimate unwrap 3d' having never used it. So maybe another user can give you more incite on that one.

But as for UV mapper Pro (you did mean uv mapper right???) I can tell you that it is a most excellent program and I can't imagine how I ever got by without it. The need for the LUVV program is a small price to pay and doesn't really interfere with work flow.

I think if you poke about on the net there is a free version of 'UV Mapper Classic' available that you could test out before buying Pro.

Hope this was at least a little helpful to you.:)

I use Ultimate Unwrap 3D, Its a great wee program with lots of plugins for file formats. It does everything I need it to do and more, it's also updated frequently.

I would suggest downloading the demo and giving it run along with UV mapper Pro to see which one yoo get along with.

Cheers

Thanks guys...

I think I need to go through the tutorials on both and see which is easiest to get to grips with...any comment on the 'pelt' maker for organic forms Garion?

MadMouse...is there something similar in UV mapper Pro? Sometimes the same function has a different name..

I have been using UU3D for awhile as well, and as such I endorse it.

I've also been a UU3D user for about 6 months - love it.

One thing as well - Daz3D's still running their Hexagon special ( http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=714 ). Platinum club + Hexagon ends up costing under $40US, and it has some very nice UV mapping tools (their UV unwrapper works wonders).

I have not tried the 'Pelt' maker, so can't really comment on it. I use the software to mark and make UV Templates for Buildings and machinery etc.

But... I will have a wee looksee :)

Just downloaded 'Ultimate Unwrapper 3d' demo and I'm very impressed. So the order is on its way as I type this.

There are still some features that I prefer in UV mapper Pro but UU3D does do a lot more of the hard work for you.

I can't comment on the other apps but I have heard a lot of good things about them.

I did however want to toss in a mention for u|v Cow. It's the only thing I use for texturing (well, besides Photoshop of course) and I like it a bunch.

Recently I was working on a non-realistic character for an upcoming short-short-short animation (LOL). I basically took a scanned 2D image that I wanted to use as the texture, did a rough geometry outline of the character in trueSpace and applied the texture. Of course it didn't match up completely so I loaded up u|v Cow. Instead of manipulating the texture to fit within the UV space, I displayed the texture as a backdrop in u|v Cow and made the UV info line up with the texture. So there was no need for the Liquify Tool or similar in Photoshop. It's really simple but really handy.

Thanks for the idea Frank,

What version of tS are you using it with? I guess with tS7.1, the modeling window may work but the player window will not. Any other experience with UV cow and recent tS versions (i.e. 6.6 and 7)

Thanks Frank,

I checked out UV cow links re. Urbans website. They are still there but the links to Milo's texturing a dragon have gone. Do you have the tutorial you could upload or do you have a current URL to this tutorial. It will give me a chance to see whether UV cow will do what I want. Its integration into trueSpace is the main attraction...

This request applies to anybody who might have the link or a site in which the tutorial was deposited in. I had a quick look at Moonman's site, but couldn't find it in the tutorial section....

Thanks

I've worked with UVcow in ts6.6, and it works fine. If I remember correctly, I've also tried it in ts7....havn't tested it in 7.1 .

Sure enough...looks like the dragon texturing tutorial is now unavailable. I sent an email to Milos, which may or may not get to him. At any rate, I will let you know what comes of it.

Meanwhile, if you have some specific questions with regards to workflow that maybe some of us other u|v Cow users can answer, feel free to ask.

EDIT: This page will give you an idea of some of u|v Cow's features:

I have an offline copy of the UV Cow Dragon Tutorial (saved it for reference many moons ago). I don't know if I'm allowed to post it here or not so am erring on the side of caution but I can't see it'd do any harm if I were to email it to one private individual? (drop me an email).

UV Cow is an awesome plugin. Being able to sort it all out right within tS rather than mess about exporting and importing in different formats is a joy. You can see the feedback on your mesh within tS straight away.

The only problem I've ever had with it is that it can occassionaly be a bit tempremental if you try to use it on an SDS mesh without extracting the final first. Apart from that - it rocks!

Hi,

I'm grateful for all the help and have downloaded both UU3D and UV mapper for trial.

The one thing that I am still interested in is whether UV cow is compatible with higher versions of tS. I just tracked this old thread where John Logan and at least somebody else seemed to be having problem with UV cow in tS6.6 which probably would mean problems for tS7 as well....

Thanks,

Chris

do any of you use the native tS UV map editor? What are the most important features in the other UV tools that tS lacks?

I'm using UV Cow in 6.6 with no problems. It does occassionally throw a wobbly if you use it on an SDS mesh without extracting the final first like I mentioned below but apart from that I have no complaints. I'd go as far as saying it's one of the most useful plugins I've ever loaded in.

I don´t think that it´s UV Cow´s fault with the SDS thingie. I use the UV Mapping Editor for everything. And have the same problem. TS tends to set the texture border one faceloop besides when you texture a not extracted SDS object.
