Ok I know this is completely off topic..and you welcome to flame al lyou
like, but I really need to know... I've got £100 to play with, and I'm considering putting a GeForce 2 in my machine, It costs £94 in the cheapest place I've found. In AW in reasonbly dense areas...and especially New York GZ..I lag beyond belief... I dont even have a proper Graphics/3D card right now, I got some crap called 3D Now! Technology...and it sucks badly. What I need to know is, if I put a GeForce 2 is...would my comp be able to handle such a powerfull card? My specs are: 400 mhz AMD-K6 2 3D Now! Technology 94 megs ram Shared Video Ram 4 Gig HD If my comp can handel the card...would it make significant changes to AW and all my games? Thanks, -Gamer shredMay 28, 2001, 8:28pm
This isn't completely off topic since it relates to AW's performance on your
machine. 3D Now! is an instruction set for AMD processors that assists in floating point calculations (I believe) and other things. The K6-2 is a Socket 7 processor, and it's safe to say that there aren't any chipsets for Socket 7 AGP support. Even if you did manage to find one, it would probably be better to wait and get a new A7V133 and slap a Duron in there, and then save up for a Geforce. But to answer your question, yes. If you had a GeForce 2 and a decent processor, your games would fly up on the performance bar. [View Quote] wingMay 28, 2001, 8:42pm
*blink* Dude, I have socket 7 AGP motherboards crawling out my ass.

I found one too, but it wasn't worth it. Especially with the latency time of
such a slow processor. [View Quote] Does it hurt? wingMay 28, 2001, 9:58pm
Unfortunately one belongs to my brother, the rest are here for repairs by customers.I DO have one I could give away, but, errr, I
ripped off a PCI slot trying to remove a stuck card. As far as processor latency goes, yeah, K6-2's are slow and probably wouldnt benefit from anything beyond a TNT2 m64. [View Quote] brantMay 29, 2001, 12:01am
One important point that many fail to miss is that a GeForce 2 is not
the solution to all problems. I have a 1.5 GHZ Pentium 4 with 256 MB of RAM and a GeForce 2, and there are times near AW GZ where my framerate drops as low as 8 with my visibility set at 120 meters. That's why I never understood why so many people want 200 meter visibility - even the most powerful card on the market today can't keep AW running at 30 frames per second in most areas, especially around ground zeros. Even with a powerful card, the framerate can drop at times. goober kingMay 29, 2001, 12:23am
Perhaps it's just my sucky system, but I don't think I've ever had 30
fps *anywhere* in AW, unless it was out in the middle of nowhere. With my GeForce2 MX, I average around 15 fps or so at 120 vis. [View Quote] -- Goober King How do they do it?!? rar1 at acsu.buffalo.edu jfk2May 29, 2001, 1:53am
Then you must have one of those crappy systems then... Standing at
Beta 4932n 5000e and looking through the more heavy dense part of my Object Yard here i pull 15 - 17 fps at 120 vis. Now standing here and looking through the most dense part Beta 4964n 5000e of my office here on Beta world.... I get 40 fps at 120 vis.... Hmmmmm OK... One more out in the boonies then....That means out where you don't have anything... AND on this world that is easy to obtain in a few short km... And standing in the middle of.... Well.... My private chat area here... Beta 4962n 4975e... 75 - 79 fps at 120 vis.... And i really shouldn't try the my house yet... It's still incomplete... BUT yes... I'm for having 200 vis... BUT even 40 vis or even 20 vis in middle of Broadway or NewYork worlds can be a byte tooooo much. you are lucky to have 5 fps there. And is why many browsers crash... goober king <rar1 at acsu.buffalo.edu> wrote in <3B1308D2.6A1E3E8E at acsu.buffalo.edu>: >Perhaps it's just my sucky system, but I don't think I've ever had 30 >fps *anywhere* in AW, unless it was out in the middle of nowhere. Could this slowdown have something to do with the way the graphics are
handled? Because most games have more polys on screen at one time than an aw browser at ground zero, and they run pretty smoothly with a Voodoo 3. SW Chris [View Quote] eepMay 29, 2001, 3:43am
How can you tell? AW has no polygon count indicator (something I've been wanting for years). Most games are optimized to have as few polys rendered as possible; AW is not. Because AW mindlessly renders everything out to a specific radius there is no portal rendering (ala Tomb Raider, Quake, etc) happening and so more unnecessary polygons are rendered.

I'd attribute this to the P4 handling unoptimized code around the speed of a P2. With my Duron 1200/Quadro 2 MXR /256mb PC166 combo
I pull nearly 30 at 120 meters vis in many places (GZ's, high poly zones), and in lower zones up to 150-175, and it's off the scale in empty places. Disclaimer: If you ask me: "How the hell did you do that?" and I give a confusing answer and then you have the testosterone to so much as attempt one bit of it with your own computer and obliterate the whole thing, you can't blame me. I keep mine at 40-60 vis. and I'm lucky to get 10 FPS per sec.
I also I have a 6mb card from a company that I have never heard o before I got this comuter... What would you recomend I get for under 100$ System Specs 533 AMD Athlon 120mb ram (yes 120, 56mb together with a 64 chip) 20 Gig HD. I think that covers it all... That aI can pull off the top of my head anyways. [View Quote] wingMay 29, 2001, 8:34pm

I agree with Wing that a new graphics card seems to be the best upgrade
option for your current system. S p a r k, your CPU is adequate, more RAM is always better (but it doesn't seem like you need more), and a 20 GB hard drive is fine. But you may want to look at the following sites for comparison pricing: 1) Go to http://www.pricewatch.com/ and search for "geforce 2 mx" and find some Generic cards for about $50 USD. 2) Go to http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&ebaytag1=ebayreg&query=geforce+2+mx&category0=&minPrice=1&maxPrice=100&ebaytag1code=0&st=0&SortProperty=MetaEndSort and look at the cards. None of them are greater than $100 USD. If the link doesn't work when you click on it, copy and paste the entire thing into your browser, one "line" at a time. Um no most games have less polys and or better engines to handle rendering
aw avs avrage around 800 900 verts while a player charector in ill use tribes for this even with all the damage decals has around 500 (a decal in relation to damge in a game is a 3 to 4 vert poly tribes avrages 50 to 100 of these so called decals) in aw i have never seen above 100 frames per second even in with nothing around and i mean nothing ie under ground at 350 meters and in games i get 110 and some times higher rates with my radeon 64 vivo. As per the vert count on aw avs i could be wrong eep or some one makeing avs may know fo sure has been a while sence i messed with the defualt avs in aw. [View Quote] nova n@n.comJun 7, 2001, 10:03am
God wing what is the defualt clock on your duron you say 600 and im going to
freek. Also wing do you hang out on hardocp.com and hard forums if not check them out they are a hard ware review site as well as overclocking etc also have a look at www.voidyourwarranty.net [View Quote] wingJun 7, 2001, 6:14pm
Default is 700. Unfortunately I iced that chip, a motherboard and 3 maxtor hard drives when mobo couldn't decide whether it wanted
to boot with an FSB of 100 or 133. Don't frequent many OCing forums, but usenet's alt.comp.hardware.overclocking gets a good dose of me. [View Quote] eepJun 7, 2001, 6:19pm
As much as I don't mind tech talk like this, this is becoming less and less relevant to AW. Please take it to email.
