An intresting Review of the first (or one of the very early) AlphaWorld (as it WAS called). It was the Worlds Chat or something like that before and this was the new Alpha World chat.....look in my other post about the spy thing and click some of the "Spy pic" links to see pictures of it. Very simple hehe :) henrikgMay 19, 2001, 2:25pm

I found it back in 98 when a friend called me really late to come get this

I found it back in Sept of 96 on a poster in WorldsChat. It looked
interesting so I clicked the link, downloaded it and walked in... I must say I was a bit jolted when all I saw was a screen of blue and black triangles all over the place (took a while to load on my old 14.4 :)) So on my very first visit, I spent a lot of time talking to triangles. :) As for how I found WorldsChat, I can't remember for the life of me. I think it involved me just searching for chat progs and that was on the list. But I had been there for about a year before I found AW. Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it ;) [View Quote] -- Goober King No one may ever know the truth... oops! rar1 at acsu.buffalo.edu ananasMay 19, 2001, 4:00pm
Dachs (Badger) has a page about an old german SciFi
TV-series called "Raumpatrouille Orion". He announced a special 3D event related to this theme in City4All. Then I found Mauz' information page about visiting different universes by changing the INI file entries. [View Quote] -- "_ | /\ \ / __/ /_ moriaMay 19, 2001, 4:09pm
Early to mid 95 I was an acolyte in Worlds Away on Compuserve, owned by
Fujitsu. I heard of this true 3d world and did some searches. September (about) of 1995 I found AW and started to come more and more frequently. About November 1995 I abandoned Worlds Away and joined AW permanently. Met a few people like dataman, grover, little bull etc and started to build. My first remaining build is dated december 1995 near the teleport station, actually too close to the teleport station, but robocop (DM), who I met at that time, saw what I was building and allowed it to stay:) I think it was one of the first builds in the new terretories after Grand Central opened. My first actual build was plowed under on a rebuild of GZ in AW many years ago when the arrival area went from about 9 tiles to the complex we have there today. My second build still has two ground tiles left but was obliterated by the PK's when they wanted to build their headquarters (pout). One day I will build a tower next to their headquarters on what is still my GZ plot:) Then I built my city in AW, then heard rumours about seperate worlds, got one of the first, if not the first commercial license from Worlds Inc and my first world was born. Been building ever since somewhere:) Moria [View Quote] casayMay 19, 2001, 4:09pm
I heard about it from a friend in IRC someime in 96. All I saw was triangles
and never gave the download a chance to finish and I removed it from my PC thinking it was terrible. Another person mentioned it again in about a year later in IRC. I tried it again and this time I let it all load. ;-) I became a citizen in April of 97. Side note - The first people I met in AW was Noots, Wascally Wabbit and Grover. What a group huh? First private world I was allowed to build in was Xav's world. My kids and I spent what seemed like 24 hours a day until we were finished in there! lol Thanks Xav! King Tex and Dharma Bum helped me out a bunch, esp King Tex. This is also when I met HenrikG :-) *sigh, great memories....* Casay [View Quote] wingMay 19, 2001, 4:21pm
Ohhhhhhhhh yes. Now for some fun. I have no clue how I found it the first time (1995/'96), never came back after I annhilated that
PC. Then later on ('97 I believe) I saw it on cNet TV and got it again. Then I annhilated THAT PC. In 1998, I downloaded it to my new Cyrix MII after seeing an ad banner for it. Then after the MII bit the bullet I didn't come back until someone emailed me about it in 1999. Then I fooled around as a tourist until July '99 and registered. Lesson: You forget about things you don't pay for. [View Quote] m a k a v e l iMay 19, 2001, 4:38pm
Don't ask me how, but a Yahoo CD showed up in my mailbox, I decided to check
it out, it was on the CD, and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. [View Quote] andrasMay 19, 2001, 5:02pm

Wow!! that is a long story. To make it short:
I got the URL in '95 from a friend together with the SnowCrash book. I read the book first (at that time literature was more important than the computer for me!) The book caught me well (I'm still reading it here and there to absorb new aspects of the story) so I gave a try of the program itself, I became hooked on the spot and since then I'm and active user of AW. I did not build for a while until Moria offered land in his world for lease. I built two buildings there (and one is AW ) and never again :) I bougth my the first personal world (called Storage) after the COF takeover. (I was waiting for Worlds, Inc to sell it to me but they just .... up). As far as I know my world was in the first few personal worlds. It is still up and active. As time went by I learned in a hard way that the virtual environment can be a VERY addictive one! Thanks to Daphne and Moria I'm still alive and here:) As few of you already know - I don't build but I make tools for everyone. I just wish the day would have 48 hours or more so I can do what I wish for the community! That is my story in a nutshell, Andras john viperMay 19, 2001, 5:18pm

he's gone and I'm still here :) Beardo [View Quote] datedmanMay 19, 2001, 7:12pm
I'm trying to remember the name of the guy who whispered to me about AW
in Worlds Chat, like, you didn't hear it from me! He was citizen 3 I think, he and his buddy errrrrm....King....Kingsomething dammit I am so bad with names, GERSH! And Kingummmmmmm I'll remember Kingpin, Kingfish, Kingahwell maybe later but the two of them had laid out the road system and a bunch more which seemed to be an amazing building feat at the time. Their roads led all the way to the ends of the world, 200 in each direction. :) And in those days if you hit 200 you fell off into the water so there were beach resorts at the edges. KINGWOOD! :) I think those asses sold KW's account but his estate may still be there around 10N 1W. Of course in those days it was something like "-1, 10". :) Since moving around was slow, Gers or KW or Grover hadda kind of lead me to a building spot for me at like, -14,14 which seemed kina far out from GZ but WTH. :) [View Quote] > And thank goodness for us you found it HenrikG! > Hey.....how did everyone else hear of Activeworlds? > I was told about it by a school teacher friend back in 97:) friendpaMay 19, 2001, 9:09pm
I somehow found World Chat and than decided to search 3d Chat to see what
else was out there. I was amazed and in awe when I found AW and immediately became addicted. I remember spending alot of time in AW GZ battling the "name stealers" at a time when citizenship was free and it was nothing for people to use the l/I trick to steal someone's name and pretend they are this person. Than the time came when AW charged for citizenship and I sent in my 20 bucks and probably because of the mass immigration, AW was a little behind on changing over the citizenships. I found myself reduced to a "tourist". Now imagine this, no whispers, stuck as a tourist and trying to get someone's attention that could help me with my plight of losing my identity and of course the fear that someone would steal my name!!! Moria came to the rescue!!!! Thanks Moria...I will be forever thankful and indebted to you :) and 10,000 memories later...Im still here hopelessly addicted. :)) FriendPA alphabit phalphaMay 19, 2001, 9:28pm
Makes me sad to see the creator of the Cy statue gone:(

about it and didn't get it and he kept bugging me to get it so I finally did and here I am O_O -- SW Comit swcomit at swcity.net Mayor of SW City http://www.swcity.net President of Community Linkage Commission http://comlinkage.tripod.com [View Quote] kahMay 20, 2001, 10:55am
I used to be on MS Cartoon Chat all the time, so one day in November 1999 I
looked in the "chat" section of the portal I used (and still use) and I found a sub-category called "VR-chat" and there was a link to the Patagonia homepage. So I downloaded the software (wasn't aware that there was anything else than Pata at the time) and explored Pata. Then I lost interest cuzz there was no way for tourists to build there at the time. then in the autumn of 2000 I logged on again and saw a sign on Pata GZ saying that free cits were being offered. So I signed up for a cit and that's the story ;-)) KAH [View Quote] nornnyMay 20, 2001, 12:03pm
Hmm...my story is pretty simple. I can still remember my first day in AW. I
was part of a gaming community for the game, Creatures (hence where my name comes from). It was an artificial 3d life game. anyways, someone from the community, a very respective head, actually found this place and lured most of us into Mars to make a settlement. From then on, only myself and a few others have actually stayed and prospered in AW. :)) Everyone else went back to Creatures. So, in reality, AW caused the downfall of interest in my favorite game ever... Nornny [View Quote] raivenMay 20, 2001, 3:45pm
Humm *ponders* It had to be May 24th 1996 cuz according to AW I registered
on the 25th. I was up in my room about to go to bed, when I suddenly decided to watch a little TV. I turned on the TV and put it on the discovery channel (I think) and watched beyond 2000 (I think, or a show like it) and at the end they had a tiny clip of worlds chat and activeworlds. MAN I just about flipped, it looked soo cool I could hardly wait till morning. But I did. So in the morning (was it after school?) or afternoon I downloaded and played in both worlds chat and activeworlds. Guess which one maintained my interest? lol. I wandered around in a day of extreme discovery, bumping into someone was amazing, cuz there weren't too many users on and there were no personal teleports so if they weren't at GZ finding them wandering around wasn't easy. Luckily there were a few around some of the main attractions. Eventually I found this cool fountain out in the middle of nowhere, and thought it was so cool I claimed it for myself, standing on top of it yelling at anyone that passed by to get away from my fountain. lol Anyway I met someone named Mr E Nigma, and he brought me out to his area and taught me how to build. I still have that spot and built my very first temple there. love that place :) even tho the gradual change of some of the original aw objects has messed up parts of it. My very first creation, was a large wall that enclosed an area. I still haven't found that place again - somewhere not too far from GZ. I wonder what happened to Mr E Nigma. He was very helpful. I owe AW a lot, it started me in a lot of my various graphics fields as well has facilitated a lot of extracurricular growth. Hell a job I worked at for 2 years was from someone I met in AW and was contracting work out in my area. Kudos to AW and the many more years of entertainment and education you'll bring! If you've read this far - CYA IN AW! -raiven [View Quote] datedmanMay 21, 2001, 5:14pm
