1.) What resource should I look for website creation?

There are many communities out there where people like to share their ideas,
but actual web designing is much catered for in the way of resources (or if
there is somwhere i havent come across it)

2.) What are some site that gives awards to website that had excellent
design so I can use them as example?

There are many different websites (e.g. CNet.com and Yahoo!) that give
awards to good community sites, and then there are magazines like PCGamer
which give award to good gaming sites. So it depends on what you site is
about...

3.) What books should I buy about website designing?

Well I never bought a book, the best way to learn HTML and other coding
tricks is to simply....surf! You find the best effects and ideas when
visiting other sites. (Be sure though if you are going to use somthing,
direct from someone elses site that you have permission from them)

4.) What software should I download or buys concerning website design?

Namo WebEditor 4 from www.namo.com - its the best software I have ever used
regarding website design. It has built in graphics editors and support for a
bucket load of up-to-date features. It also have built in java scripts and
applets to liven up your site.

5.) What are some scripting/programming langauge(s) should I start with
for learning and early design?

HTML and Java are the most useful ones.

6.) In later futures, what langauges should I learn for advanced website
in future?

ASP and PHP are both very flexable, I've seen many exellent sites optimise
these languages (e.g. AWnews.com)

7.) Does anyone have website to show me for examples of some web design?

to look at other peoples templates and designs try www.freeewebtemplates.com
or www.4templates.com - if your looking to see actual sites in action, try
www.active-worlds.co.uk - or awnews.com or www.darkvapor.com ...

8.) What website provider do anyone recommend and tell me why it is
recommended? For example, advantages and disadvantages and etc. (free one
only)

www.doteasy.com becuase they have very cheap rates for buying domains and
offer free bannerless hosting with each domain for free...

9.) What graphic software should I use to design GIFs and JPGs for
website?

Adobe Photoshop 6 (www.adobe.com) and Jasc Paintshop Pro 7 (www.jasc.com)
perfect combination...

a.) Is it a good idea to use some parts or pages for WYSIWYG (What You
See Is What You Ge) editor (like Microsoft Word, Microsoft FrontPage) and
some for coding
(Ultra Edit, Notepad, etc.)

Yes...its a lot quicker and saves coding mistakes...

b.) What are some good tutorial I can take to learn how to design
website?

There ar some good ones built into Name WebEditor 4...if not search the
web...there are millions...

c.) What are good FTP client I can use in order to upload files to
website?

CuteFTP 4 - great program, does everything u need...cheap too :o)

d.) Does anyone have tips and hints for me?

Tip: Keep it simple!!! Some of the best websites like some of the above, and
even sites like Yahoo.com and Google.com all utilise simple, clean
designs...

Tip: Dont use frames unless you have too, you will lose visitors using old
browsers and add a lot more complication to your site like I have had
recently with the resources section of my website :o)

e.) Should I create a two separate version of my website, one for
Internet Explorer, and one for Netscape?

Make your site to suit IE then test it in Netscape, it if dosent look right
then correct it and save it as a seperate version. So basically.....yes, if
your site dosent look right in both, make two versions to suit each...

g.) Is it ok with you that a ad banner is only on top and bottom but
doesn't refresh like Yahoo! website? Note: Also similar to Yahoo!, it
doesn't do popup windows of ad.

Yes thats fine, although I like bannerless sites, its much more presentable
becuase you dont have "SPEED UP YOUR CONNECTION NOW" or "FREE MONEY"
flashing at you all the time :o)

h.) Are there any good software I can use for special purpose like
form-creating program or etc.?

There are many java compilers out there that let you write and compile java
applets...wait till you've been doing this a bit longer before you start
moving on to things like that...

i.) Any more topics I have not thought of will be appericated (am I
spelling it right?)

No its Appreciated - and yes, Flash...Macromedia Flash 5 is a great
programme and adds interactivity to your site with only small downloads and
support for high quality output...

Hope that helped :o)

Replies below.

[View Quote] For those who have designed website, I would like to ask about these things.

1.) What resource should I look for website creation?

If you mean by program resources, I reccommend Dreamweaver. :) It's the best
WYSIWYG program out there. But hand coding will get you the depth that you
need. So look around for HTML tutorials online, most give you the basics to
get started and to understand.

2.) What are some site that gives awards to website that had excellent
design so I can use them as example?

my favorite has always been http://www.coolhomepages.com . Not quite an
awards site, but it lists a BUNCH of sites that are themed into categories
for you to see as inspiration. There are a few others out there also.

3.) What books should I buy about website designing?

Creating Killer Web Sites, Second Edition
Web Pages That Suck
HTML Artistry: More than code

all of which you can get at my most favorite webmaster resource site,
Elated. http://store.elated.com/books/

4.) What software should I download or buys concerning website design?

Definately Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. Not both, one will suffice. PSP
will get the job done at a cheap price. :) Photoshop has a lot of goodies
that you can use if you're advanced. :)

An FTP client, there a a few good free ones, like WS_FTP. You don't need
anything fancy. :)

If you have a few extra bucks or time, get a WYSIWYG program. :) It helps as
an organizational tool as well as a good visual base.

5.) What are some scripting/programming langauge(s) should I start with
for learning and early design?

Basically, just HTML for now. Languages like javascript and DHTML won't
really require much learning to use them. You just copy and paste if you
want to use them.

6.) In later futures, what langauges should I learn for advanced website
in future?

I definately reccomend learning how to use CGI. Even how to code it if
neccessary, but definately understanding how to upload and install cgi on
webpages will help you a lot. A clearer understanding of javascript will get
you a long way also.

7.) Does anyone have website to show me for examples of some web design?

http://www.elated.com
http://www.coolhomepages.com

8.) What website provider do anyone recommend and tell me why it is
recommended? For example, advantages and disadvantages and etc. (free one
only)

I always liked Spaceports, especially once you get into more advanced coding
as it gives you cgi capabilities and the oppurtunity to make money from your
space through their banner ads. Paid hosting is always EXTREMELY
reccommended.

9.) What graphic software should I use to design GIFs and JPGs for
website?

PaintShopPro or Photoshop. :)

a.) Is it a good idea to use some parts or pages for WYSIWYG (What You
See Is What You Ge) editor (like Microsoft Word, Microsoft FrontPage) and
some for coding
(Ultra Edit, Notepad, etc.)

Definately. :) I use both all the time. Actually, in many of those editors,
you can still handcode through their built in HTML coding pad, which works
really good, since they also organize it for you too in some instances.

b.) What are some good tutorial I can take to learn how to design
website?

there are many on the web. :) Just search around. Most sites will separate
into Basic and Advanced tutorials, but you really do need to learn BOTH to
do anything decent.

c.) What are good FTP client I can use in order to upload files to
website?

WS_FTP is what I use.

d.) Does anyone have tips and hints for me?

http://www.elated.com comes with predesigned sites in which you can use as
starter bases in created really good websites. The whole site in general is
what I use as inspiration most of the time. The more sites you look at, the
more you'll get better at making sites.

e.) Should I create a two separate version of my website, one for
Internet Explorer, and one for Netscape?

Ideally, you should make a website that is compatible with both. You usually
won't need to make two sites if you play your design cards right.

g.) Is it ok with you that a ad banner is only on top and bottom but
doesn't refresh like Yahoo! website? Note: Also similar to Yahoo!, it
doesn't do popup windows of ad.

Banner ads are fine, as long as they don't popup and aren't everywhere, so
they slow down loading times. :) I usually put one on the top fold of my
page (as most ad companies want it on top) and just leave it there. Maybe a
few button ads, but no more.

h.) Are there any good software I can use for special purpose like
form-creating program or etc.?

You're better off learning how to create forms. But, any of the Macromedia
products will enhance your site greatly. Definately get your hands on Flash
if possible. Fireworks and Freehand are good also.

i.) Any more topics I have not thought of will be appericated (am I
spelling it right?)

Nope. You've covered most bases. :))

[View Quote] I agree with everything you said BUT this. Frontpage I haven't tried, but Word leaves a LOT of garbage behind in the HTML. Senseless
HUGE blank comments, weird characters that truthfully aren't needed, etc.

The best WYSIWYG editor that I've used is Macromedia Dreamweaver available at your local Warez monger's locker.

I have been doing webdesign on a small and medium scale. My advice from =
that experience would be: know upfront CLEARLY what you are actually =
designing for. If it is to get a job done, know what it requires. If =
it is because you want to be a programmer with a huge vocabulary of =
stuff on an academic level, read and take classes. I use software and I =
apply it. I make it a point to be able to learn any software program I =
can, but I pay very little attention to the programming aspect. You may =
be different and have different goals.

There is just so much you can do to make your text, pictures, and sound =
files fit the net. Technology is better away from the computer, and it =
has to become compromised so all our computers can relate. With text, =
keep it off of programs like Flash or pictures. With Pictures, put more =
concentration on getting good scans or good shots from a digital camera. =
If you do that right, then there is less garbage on the net. I have =
yet to work with a program that does decent effects. When using sound, =
realize the download it will take for slower modems. Make sure to keep =
backups in the best quality you can with whatever you use, so you can =
use them later on.

If you are doing things on a larger scale, cookie cutter approach, then =
ask someone else. I don't do that nor do I worry about sites winning =
awards. A few years down the road, that site would never win an award. =

I design for ie purposes, and if there is a conflict with netscape then =
oh well. If someone really wants to see your site, they can access it =
through ie.

As for pop-ups, being a visitor to sites, I automatically close out =
sites with pop up ads. It doesn't do the advertiser and company paying =
for the advertising any good. People don't like to have stuff popping =
in their face and that goes with sound too. I give people the choice on =
sites I make with sound to click something to get sound. They have the =
choice if they want it. =20

So, with that said, whatever you can do to avoid this is good. Ask them =
if you can put their ad on the page somewhere. Then keep the remaing =
page ad free. I think you will see people coming to your site =
appreciate this more.

If you want to use forms, you will have to learn programming. I did a =
little bit with learning asp (active server page) for a site, which =
allows you to read and write to a text file. This could be used also as =
a form. If you want it to go to an email address, I prefer just making =
them email you. With forms going to email, you run the risk of someone =
not giving you an email address and no where to reply to. Email to =
Email forces a real email address to be used.

> 4.) What software should I download or buys concerning website design?
Arachnophilia (see below)
IndexDOT HTML : http://www.blooberry.com/download/download.htm

> 5.) What are some scripting/programming langauge(s) should I start with for learning and early design?

HTML

> 6.) In later futures, what langauges should I learn for advanced website in future?

PHP and/or Perl - forget everything that runs on a client,
especially microsoft junk

> a.) Is it a good idea to use some parts or pages for WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Ge) editor (like Microsoft Word, Microsoft FrontPage) and some for coding
> (Ultra Edit, Notepad, etc.)

Notepad is sure a good choice to avoid overhead but have a look at
http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/index.html

> c.) What are good FTP client I can use in order to upload files to website?

The fastest one for pure mass upload is NetScape as it
does not check for overwrite and success.

A very good program (not only for FTP things) is
http://www.rar.de/html/fardownloadstart.html
I don't know where the english page is located but
they have the english download there.
This one is not freeware.

> e.) Should I create a two separate version of my website, one for Internet Explorer, and one for Netscape?

If you try to keep the standards and test your page with
at least 2 browsers that should not be necessary.
=> http://www.anybrowser.org/

> g.) Is it ok with you that a ad banner is only on top and bottom but doesn't refresh like Yahoo! website? Note: Also similar to Yahoo!, it doesn't do popup windows of ad.

Users who don't want banners can filter banners
Users who don't like popups don't enable JavaScript

So it is not too bad to use banners without refresh

You always can offer nices and fancy pages as an option but
you should not force people to use a certain browser or
browser setting.
There are still some Lynx, Arachne and HTML3-browser users
out there and I bet they would rather avoid your page than
change their browser.

A good mostly web related software site is on
http://www.slaughterhouse.com

Volker

p.s.: Before the users of HTML3 browsers flame me now, I
know that I have PNG graphics on my pages but every image
has an ALT= tag ;)
