What's up with it anyway, is it suppose to help AW run faster, or look
better? I can't tell whether I like AW more with it on or not. Who uses it
anyway?

I don't use it. It bothers my eyes. I'm already far sited and mipmapping
makes it worse lol

Works diff on diff computers, made it smoother on mine, and alittle faster
:)

I use it, mostly because without it on the textures get distorted at a
distance, and it hurts my eyes after a while.

Where is this "mipmapping" option? (I am using 3.1, build 375)

Options then settings ...then check or uncheck enable mipmaps.
I have a ATI Rage II+ and it messes with my mouse when I run it. How ever
when I could run it I enjoyed the "close up" clarity of textures.
Time for a new video card:)

WHOAH!! Makes the objects look like someone came and smudged it LOL

With quality video cards, it makes no difference in speed and makes textures look better at long distances and close up by smoothing
out pixelation close up and smudging them together at distances. Much like real life, your wall appears a pretty solid color until
you get real close to it and can see all the fine details.

i use it. after 3 days trying it at 120 scenery i wont go back. things are
more smooth and you get used to it:)

Yes I have used it ever since I had the AW browser, makes everything alot
clearer for me and less grainy looking. I prefer using it to not using it.
It all depends on what kind of graphics card you have, some have no change
some have positive change and some negative. I give it a very positive
rating, lol

Yeah, I chose a Radeon for my comp when I was building it, and I like
mipmapping because it makes the textures look smooth...I think its just
supposed to be some sort of aesthetic feature.

MM does affect speed. Makes it slower. It elimates problems like moire
patterns on distant objects(mmm try the walk that has the metal texture with
gridlike pattern) but does so at the expense off making them less sharp
looking.

Mipmapping makes rendering faster, not slower. I've already explained mipmapping in the correct newsgroup, worldbuilders, days ago in response to the initial post in this thread...

I have a Geforce 2 gts and a Dual P III 650e with 384M ram and Win 200 and
when I enable mipmapping in aw it slows down rendering a tad. Roland has
also said it is a bit of a performance hit.

Odd because with my GeForce 256, P3/533, 256MB RAM, Win98 , mipmapping speeds up frame rate because less textures are being rendered at the same resolution at all distances. Mipmapping improves frame rate; I've never seen it cause a performance hit--even on my crappy ATI Rage + with Half-Life.

GeForce 2 GTS, Dual PIII 1GHz, 512M ram, W2K server - no rendering speed difference with mipmapping enabled/disabled

Well now that's odd. Perhaps if AW had a benchmark mode this could be tested better. Try 3D games that have a mipmapping option and see if frame rate increases with it on. Though with a system that fast, Andras, it probably wouldn't matter much anyway. But it should DEFINITELY not SLOW rendering down any.
