How to get rid of the crEepy trolls? // CommunityandrasApr 2, 2001, 8:34pm
I'm frequenting several newsgroups (not on the Usenet - that sux) and we developed a pretty good tactic agains trolling:
DON'T FEED THE TROLL!!! With other words - just don't respond :) Andras nornnyApr 3, 2001, 8:54am
That was always the way to deal with trolls, but of course, that would be
TOO traditional of this community newsgroup. :) We prefer running at it with flames and burning down the whole newsgroup until the troll runs away. :) Hey, it HAS worked, and land values are cheap anyways for rebuilding. Nornny [View Quote] iceyApr 3, 2001, 3:06pm
Are you sure it'll work preperly? 'You go to the postal office and the ppl instead of queueing up politely pushes you and
pass by...' here's your tactic: do not make any complaint ..don't feed the unpolite queue:) in other words... be silent in your corner and make sure all the ppl will walk all over you icey [View Quote] > I'm frequenting several newsgroups (not on the Usenet - that sux) and we developed a pretty good tactic agains trolling: > > DON'T FEED THE TROLL!!! > > With other words - just don't respond :) > > Andras roluApr 3, 2001, 6:00pm

It only works if everybody does it - in other words, the person behind the
counter must ignore the impolite queue too. If, in the newsgroups, only two people rant at each other, that's enough to go on. One person won't make it. rolu iceyApr 3, 2001, 7:06pm
Assuming this NG has a person behind the counter...who's behind the counter
then? It's not a question of ranting..I am understanding it is a question of beign offensive, unpolite, rough, superficial, depressive and inadequate...who's not bothering means won't spend a penny of his precious time to build anything more than what is already available on the net, ...though... the net was built by ppl that did spend much of their precious time to share ideas and help...long ago icey [View Quote] [View Quote] nornnyApr 3, 2001, 8:02pm
You'd be surprised how much this tactic works. But, it is an idealistic
suggestion (but hey, look who's talking. ;) ). Basically, an empty thread is a disregarded thread. You see a header like "SUCK YO MOMMA" and ignore it, the troll has nowhere to go. He hasn't gotten any attention, which is usually the main idea behind those posts. But, people get easily annoyed and must chime in their opinions. All it takes is one flame back to the troll and the newsgroup is as good as becoming a wasteland. Solution?: Don't respond to a troll thread, EVER. But, if you see that someone has already maken the mistake, and the troll is really getting on your nerves, the newsgroup is as good as trash, so enlist yourself in the flame war. Yes you're right definitely, it all depends on the type of NG you like to have
and the kind of ppl you like to know where you're posting in icey [View Quote] > You'd be surprised how much this tactic works. Nornny,
I often ignore trash addressed to me in the newsgroup... It is difficult not to react to trash addressed to newbies or to people asking for help, because there is an innocent party involved, and they don't deserve the treatment they get. That's one of the tactics of trolls: attack the innocent, ignorant or weak, or people in need of help. XelaG [View Quote] roluApr 5, 2001, 3:35pm

That varies. In the post office there's a clear you <-> person behind the
counter. Here we all talk to each other, so we all take turns. > It's not a question of ranting..I am understanding it is a question of > beign offensive, unpolite, rough, superficial, depressive and inadequate...who's > not bothering means won't spend a penny of his precious time to build anything > more than what is already available on the net, ...though... the net was built > by ppl that did spend much of their precious time to share ideas and help...long > ago People are sharing help, thoughts and idea's more than ever using the net. This includes things you won't like. rolu roluApr 6, 2001, 3:23pm

Some people consider flaming a sport, for example. They honestly like to
flame each other over all kinds of silly things. (but not on the "you suck" level - that's just stupid flaming.) Other people think those people are sick and don't want to get near them. In general, since there are so many people online, there are always people who do and say things you don't agree with or are annoyed by. The web contains a lot of crap. Some people freak out on the amount of crap and think the net is a mess, others just search for the gems. It's just a matter of how you choose to view it. rolu |
