Here's a random thought:

You know if AW is just not good enough for you guys, why don't you make your
own 3-d universe and engine?

I would have started on such a venture several months ago, but alas, I can't
program yet. :)

Everyone here knows enough about AW and its shortcomings that an AW 2.0
could be created using all new code that would have everything AW didn't.

Discussion?

I get tired of the idiots who call AW a waste of time. It's no more of a
waste of time than any other game, it's all just entertainment.

It is interesting. But what I'm talking about is a system like AW, that can
be adapted for anything. Worldforge is designed for RPG games in mind.

I have noticed that many people concider Aw to be a game.I look at it more
as a chat;and for that purpose is it much better than most I have run into.

I mostly look at it as a hobby - 3d arts, with chat mixed in.

[View Quote] Because it would take a huge amount of time and a good knowledge of
programming. Many people have neither.

Well its very good for ideas if you want to become a future 3d animator,
modeller, or video game maker. It gives you a sense of the spatial
relations between different types of 3 dimensional objects, which is always
important. ^_^

Negative thinking, you. Looking at the number of cheap shots going Roland's
way, I would think that there are many programmers here who could and would
out-program Roland if given the chance. The idea wasn't meant for casual
users to take on, but the actual people you speak of, the people who can
afford to "take a huge amount of time" and who have "a good knowledge of
programming."

Programming is much harder than non-programmers think it is, Chris, I've
been learning for about a year now, and I still can't do alot of the stuff I
hoped I would when I started. And Roland is a better programmer than you
think most likely :)

ah don't worry about me. I know its hard, and I know that Roland is a
better programmer than most of the ones here. The question is... do they
know it? =P

yep i play rpgs all the time what originaly got me in to 3d chat was i
wanted to add vrml to my web site after upgradeing my puter from my 486 to
my k6-2 300 i searched the net for a vrml viewer and found blaxxun 3d chat.
while there i heard bout active worlds so i checked it out decided it wasnt
good enough to leave my curent fereinds in blaxxun behind for as i couldnt
devide my time between aw and blaxxun. (note) i was highly impressed with
aws realism even in 1.x browser wich is when i first checked aw out the
first time.
3d games was not what originaly drew me to 3d chat.
it was the 3d aspect alone that got me in to blaxxun as i was not a major
chat person i used the internet for searching for walk through and faqs for
rpgs and just stumbled on to 3d chat.
what kept me in blaxx for 2 years and now aw going on i think 3 years is the
comunity asspect not the possibility of games.
basicly what im saying if i want to play a game i will goto toys are us and
pick up the latest rpg.
ive beta tested god 15 or 20 difrent games some you hvae all played some you
have not most of them i cant even rember the names of the ones i do i cant
talk about even today.
some never hit the market like a ad&d rpg based on the play on paper series
wasnt ad&d btw.
any how i get alittle tired of hereing aw should be a level editor or should
have more lever editing type fetures.
something that i think would help aw 3.0s performance is cliping planes and
hsr open gl etc. any how this post is to dang long so ill end it here dont
want to be flamed to death eheh:)

Here's the deal. We all know there are plenty of people with the
programming talent to take on this task. Hell, I could do it. The problem
is that it would be a huge investment, with virtually no return for quite
some time, if ever. The only reason AW was a reasonable idea to begin with
is because someone could put up a little money to start. Building a newer,
better AW-like thing wouldn't be the kind of task you take on as a hobby -
at least, not if you want to do it right. And it must be done right, or
else it should not be done at all. Half-assed attempts like the one AWCI is
giving aren't even worth a second glance.

So, why do we complain? Because the people with the resources will not
allow them to be used correctly. The people who have the money and whatnot
simply do not have the vision. You can show me as many pieces of current
software as you want, I can make a judgement right now. They all suck,
either because they were built by some blind fuck of a company, or because
the maker was doing it alone in his spare time. Everyone's too scared to
take a leap. Oh no, I might lose some quantity of money I put into the
thing, then whatever will I do? You'll die, like everyone else. . . .
Either that, or they just can't come up with 'leaping' sort of ideas.

Ok, people. We've managed to reform the likes of Col Klink and The
Derek. What's say we work on nova now?

If we've said it before, we've said it a million times:
1. Punctuation!
2. Capitalization! (*Correct* Capitalization)
3. Coherence!

Learn it. Type it. Live it.

I got maybe two sentences (if you can even call them that) into your
post before I just said "Screw it!" I can hardly tell where one thought
ends and another begins! Is it really that hard?!

Getting off topic, you. I didn't post this to bash AW's current bigshots.
:( To be fair to everyone, I would suggest not posting something that isn't
known to be true for sure. AWCI could be working their butts off for this
thing, even if their attempts fail.

But I do see what you're saying.

I definately see it as more than a chat; how about all the users building up
long time projects in here, forming communities, advertising their AW ideas,
etc? Chat sure is an important part of all that, but just a part:)

(weeeee, Ive not been able to post to this ng in ages, now it works!!! :)

[View Quote] Quite so. It's like a pool of mud with some coins in it, there are some
useful things inside but you can't see them easily and it takes some effort
to get them out.

[View Quote] Something they certainly don't do is talk to the masses. This annoys quite
some people, they feel ignored etc, which in turn makes them mad. For
example, we have a wishlist newsgroup, but nobody from AWCI ever seems to
look in it. I think they should be more active in these newsgroups, and more
online in places like aw gz or awgate or something. Techtalk is a nice
exception, but it's way too busy to really talk and discuss. However, it
seems AWCI never gets here because they are affraid to defend their choices.
If they get in here they will surely get some flames. But that shouldn't
matter, there will also be positive things (and no buttkissing please). It's
all about interaction.

Look, AWCI (CoF for those who remember who they really are) has ALWAYS been
like this, long before everyone started to complain and flame. Why do you
think the complaining STARTED to begin with? Because they won't listen, they
make terrible decisions, and they won't even make any effort to explain
what's going on. Not to mention that the people in charge, Rick and JP (also
known as The Worst Person Ever) are about as useful as a rotting elephant.
It's almost too late for them to come out and say "oh, look, we're here to
listen now." Perhaps if they'd done that when they first showed up,
everything wouldn't be in this mess now.

That's about what I said too.

Yup. Still, I think they should try. With the right attitude they could
still make it. However, I doubt they want to.

Judging from what I hear Roland say at a tech talk, which I don't want to
put down really, and everything AWCI has done in the years, it's pretty
obviously that they don't like AW at all, they just do it for the money.
For example, my parents think AW is stupid, but if they could make money off
it, well, then you got a AWCI right there.
