You know what would be interesting - if someone who had some knowledge of
how to query servers like babelfish.altavista.com through code could program
a bot that translates conversations - I wonder how accurate it would be :)

Well, maybe we should ask frizzle to make such a bot available to the community with his great new code :o)

Babelfish is very inaccurate as I'm sure you know, but I'm sure it'd be
relatively simple. I don't know much about VB at all but it sounds like you
could just figure out how babelfish inserts the line of text and language
into the URL and then download the information from the URL with the line of
text inserted and the language. Then you'd just have to extract the correct
portion of text from the website, which shouldn't be all that difficult.

[View Quote] It's not too hard, but I think there's already a bot that's used it.

In response, I did ask frizzle, and here is what he had to say:

You can do this with the module I made for Tekadence Magik fairly easily...
in fact I have an example bot on my website that uses the borland babel web
service (same thing as the altavista babelfish except it translates to
humorous versions of english, not other languages).

http://www.axlogic.com/apps/babelbot/babelbot.htm

Perhaps I'll make an altavista babel bot as well.

www.translate.ru
www.worldlingo.com
www.systranet.com

Those are all good ones Systranet has the most languages but most of the
uncommon ones have very small dictionarys. World lingo is good for Dutch and
German but it doesn't even know to put the verb before the subject in a
question in Spanish. Translate.ru is the best one I've found and can do good
Russian and other languages.
