My first post, help with 3D card (General Discussion)

Ok, don't throw stones at me, I'm a Mac user :)
Since I got fed up with running Active Worlds on a PC emulator (sloooooow) I convinced my boss to let me have one of the companies old Dell towers. Its a 450mhz Dimension model. My problem is that it comes with a nVidia TNT2 card with 16mb of memory. Gives a decent performance with distance set to 40 meters, not a lot. I have been asking a lot of people online what cards they use and price performance wise they suggested a geforce 2. Now is my question, which one? I can get my hands on the MX200 model for a fair price, would that do the trick? Gerard, on and off active worlds since 95. young phalphaMar 1, 2002, 11:41am
You might want to try a Geforce 4 MX :) They should be pretty cheap. Could you give a price
range and interface (PCI or AGP)? If its PCI your best bet is a Geforce 4 420... I can get a GeForce4 MX 440 for $135. It should outperform the top of the
line GeForce2 model. Go to mySimon.com and search for GeForce4 MX 440 and you can get a listing of the places online that offer the cheapest prices. SW Chris [View Quote] dabartenderMar 1, 2002, 9:44pm
Not to be a stick-in-the-mud here, but IMHO, the performance difference
between a GF4MX and a GF2MX isn't really worth the $120+ price difference :-) Tom's Hardware (www.tomshardware.com) has a basic review of the new GF4 cards. While the GF4MX has higher memory bandwidth and a faster clock speed, the overall "fill rate" is 600Mpixels/sec vs. 400 for the GF2MX. So you optimally get 50% more overall performance increase at roughly 250-300% of the price. Not exactly the price/performance ratio I'd typically spend my money for. I've got a 64-meg GF2 card that I wouldn't give up for the world right now, given the price differences. The GF4MX line is *crippled* in comparison to the GF4 Ti cards...the Ti series is the cream of the crop - with prices to match ;-) As someone who does some pretty hardcore 3D stuff beyond AW, I can say that the performance of a GF2 card would be well worth the $50 or $60 you'd spend on it. Don't take my opinion as gospel, though...do some research on your own, listen to others, and make your own decisions :-) [View Quote] sw chrisMar 2, 2002, 8:18pm
