Am I only one getting sick of all these boring 3D "Homepage" worlds in AW???
It's the same worlds duplicated over and over and
over and....<yawn> all over the place!

Thank you...rant over.
Merry Krimble! Happy Holidays!!!

I second that.. I think AW should turn them off, it's obvious they aren't
making any money off it. The free cit for 30 days is a good ploy though.

Not only that but the world list takes forever to download for those of us on
dialup thanks to all the darn things.

im on a 56K dial up and that list use to take me about 10 sec to fully load
in, now with the 3d home pages it takes me around 30 sec to a min.
sure some of them themes look cool, but giving them out like that free trial
was not a good idea. I even tried one, and the theme I picked it and with my
visibility set to 40 it lagged like a 5th day tourist build. any higher
visibility and you can't move, I got a good video card to.

[View Quote] It takes me about 10 seconds flat to load it now through a 56k dial up modem
where as it use to take only prehaps 2-3 seconds. :o/ But atleast it still
bearable for me.

With the lag you are experiencing, I would assume the speed of the CPU has
something to do with it as well, not just the videocard alone. I'm prity
sure that the engine that AW is using utitlises both the CPU and the
videocard (excluding software render which uses the CPU only).
The framerates for me seems okay (around 12fps at 80m visibility) under all
the themes that are available, I'm currently using an old PIII 550Mhz with
an outdated 32MB nVidia TNT2 pro, yes I know it's an old system but at least
it does all I need it to do.

Also another thing which can contribute to the lag is lack of RAM, I've
noticed that when I had 128MB my system would start jerking and pausing when
it used it up all the available RAM and started swapping data between the
HardDisk and RAM. Since upgrading to 256MB this has ceased.

Try all three, OpenGL, DirectX and software rendering.
On my old ATI RagePro card on WinNT4, the software mode
is way (about 10 times) faster than OpenGL.

This card isn't a very good 3D card, but the OpenGL
driver is just crap.

And wait for the downloads to complete, before you
measure the framerate, while AW downloads, it seems
to put a lot of load on the CPU.

yes, the lag during downloads is just horrible, never experienced that with
3.1...

10 seconds? Oh 56K? Gods I wish. I am on 56K here and I wait a good 45 seconds
each time. I also am not the only one waiting that long (or longer). I know one
person of DSL who takes longer than I do to load it.

I do best in Direct 3D mode, although I am able to use all video modes.
Direct 3D gives be best performance overall.
OpenGL seems to over brighten the light commands.
and the software mode, I don't really see a difference between it and Direct
3D

im running a P2 350Mhz 128MB ram voodoo5 5500 card with 64MB video
memory

That seems right, Voodoo cards are best optimised for (from best to worse) : Glide - Direct3D - OpenGL
nVidia cards are best at OpenGL, and then Direct3D (Glide unsupported of course).
I'm not sure but I think ATI cards are best at Direct3D and then OpenGL.
Kyro cards are best at OpenGL (I think?)

I use 56k with a nVidia Quadro 2 MXR (GeForce II MX with a few added
functions for a lot more money) 32mb and an Athlon XP system clocked at
2088MHz with 512mb of DDR RAM clocked at 333Mhz. Indeed one of the biggest,
baddest all-around machines ever to grace the face of the earth, and what do
I get in certain 3d homepages in OpenGL (The fastest method for this setup)?
15FPS. I rest my case. If this doesn't improve to at LEAST 30 when I pop a
R8500 in here, AW will officially become a lost cause.

Hi everyone:

[View Quote] Putting myself at great risk of being flamed or chastised, as an owner of a
PAID 3D Homepage, I'm a believer that it isn't neccessarily the fact you
have a 3D Homepage that matters the most. It's what you do with it once
it's all set up and paid for that matters the most. And as such, THOSE are
the homepage worlds what will get the most attention.

Now, of course I'll admit that I haven't done very much since I paid for my
3D Homepage aside from partially destroying a house while trying to place an
imported object there (and moving Ground Zero as a result), but there are
SOME of who DO have plans for our 3D Homepages (and are working on carrying
them out).

If you REALLY want to get on a rant, take a look at all those worlds which
are NOT 3D Homepages that CONSISTENTLY get ZERO users, yet they insist on
listing themselves in the AW directory. And some of those worlds don't even
look like they've updated in like MONTHS too!!!

Was it a good idea to offer a 30-day FREE TRIAL for 3D Homepages??? No.
But the problem of worlds to users ratio existed LONG before 3D Homepages
came along.

Add this to the fact that AW is now charging its users on a MONTHLY basis
just merely goes to show the effort that AW has made in promoting ITSELF!!!
But I'll leave this for another topic/thread.

In short, as I indicated earlier, the problem of the ratio of worlds to
users was there LONG BEFORE 3D Homepages came along. This is a fact no one
can deny!!

Just my $.02 worth....Cheers for now. :-)

Woo Tyrell! Usin' AW to put the moves on the chicks, eh? That's quite the
idea, maybe AWC could try to market it? :-P
I can see it now... *dream sequence* *harp playing*

*Visiting a yahoo.com news page*

"Activeworlds Technology Enables Guys to put moves on Chicks."

"Put the moves on chicks in FULL 3D! Yes, 3D! We are the leader in 3D
technology on the internet! 3D dammit! Did we mention we are fully 3d?
Don't mistake our software with 2D, ok? And remember, we have over 2
million users world wide! Remember that. (And we are not 2D, we are 3D."

*wakes up in a cold sweat*
Deja-vu. (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/020118/nyf051_1.html)
