From 2.2 to 3.2 on an antique machine... // General Discussion

I went from 2.2 to 3.2. A lot of things don't seem to work right for =
me. Admittedly, I have an old computer system, but at this point in =
time I cannot replace it with a new one. My video driver is as up to =
date as I can get it. I'm running a P-1 166MHz with no MMX, 64MB RAM, =
2MB video RAM, W95, IE 5.5, DirectX 8.0.

- Cell grid appears to be invisible in software render mode. Found out =
last night that on my computer with my OEM video card (S3 Virge on an HP =
Pavilion 7270), it is actually there, but it is black and invisible =
under most conditions. The same is true of the object selection =
highlighting, it is also black and nearly invisible in software render =
mode. However, I can see both perfectly fine while running in DirectX =
mode (unfortunately, FPS suffers severely in that mode, and the entire =
computer slows down to a snail's pace). =20

- A related problem to the one above (at least, I think they're related) =
is that for me, Create Color does not work properly in software render =
mode. It doesn't matter what color I try to create, it renders in =
black/white/shades of gray, even though colored textures work just fine. =
In addition, pp16.rwx and any other glass piece renders as a very dark =
smoky glass, almost black.

BTW, I haven't run into anyone else that has these problems yet, so =
yeah, it's probably just my antique computer system, but it's all I've =
got.=20

- Midis restart themselves if teleporting in between two objects that =
have the identical midi playing, rather than continuous play... that's =
irritating. The listening radius of a Create Sound midi is much too =
small... walk a little ways away and you can't hear it at all.

- Teleports seem faster than with v2.2, but the teleport .wav file seems =
to lag quite a bit.

- The update file from 2.2 to 3.2 was missing a vital =
open-something-or-other.dll file to be able to run it in OpenGL mode. =
Trying to open AW in that mode crashed my machine, and I was prompted to =
re-download the entire browser, which turned out to be unnecessary... =
luckily I had copied the activeworlds.ini file into another directory =
prior to trying OpenGL mode, and the fix was a simple copy/paste of the =
original .ini file back into the AW directory.

- Fog seems to be more like shadows than fog. =20

- Documentation and Help files (in all versions of AW) could stand some =
improvement. In particular, the Command helpfiles, and info about =
skyboxes in 3.2.

Am experiencing the same general probs on my old system (tho haven't
experimented with sound performance under the different modes as I'm minus a
sound card). Because the bdrops look so bad in software mode, I'm staying
in Direct 3D -- stuff looks OK so far, but movement is impossible -- barely
an understatement, as it's so slow I can't even get the buttons to work to
select anything. It's not worth trying to build in Direct 3D -- but it's
sure no pleasure visually to be in the worlds in software mode. After
hearing of the probs in Open GL, I'm not going to try that sans a 3D card
and faster CPU either. Like many, I can't upgrade my system. So where does
that leave all of us cits in this situation? Is there any hope on the
horizon for a decent solution from AW soon?

Anyone who still has an S3 Virge should be shot repeatedly in the head with a .22 so the bullet can't make it through the skull and just sloshes around inside for a bit. There is NO excuse to still have a P166. Upgrade or become obsolete.

You can't buy a measly Voodoo3 for, what, now $20? Your Tseng Labs ET6000 (what the hell chip does it use anyway??) crapcard™ is even worse than the S3 Virge!

My dear kind Mr.. eep,

You don't know me, but I've somewhat gotten to know you through these =
newsgroups and your website, and I've seen you in the world I normally =
hang out in once or twice, too. I actually thought, eep, that your =
opinions about AW and it's so-called "community" were pretty much in =
line with my own, but now... after that comment...

For you to suggest and advocate violence in the form of a shooting of =
little old me simply because I do not have the funds to upgrade my =
antique computer system is not only unsympathetic towards the poorer =
segment of people online, but also shows your lack of a basic grasp of =
the realities of offline life. There are some people in the world who =
cannot afford to be online at all. Does that make those people unworthy =
or in any way less important than yourself? I think not, and I also =
think you and many other people online need a Reality Check.=20

Not all of us are wealthy enough to continually upgrade our computers as =
we KNOW they should be upgraded (it is not a lack of tech knowledge nor =
desire that prevents us from keeping current with technology), we must =
first see to the basic needs of life, such as food, clothing, and =
shelter. In my own case, I am lucky to even be online at all, =
considering my own current economic situation. =20

If you are in a position to be able to actually help me to get a newer =
computer (perhaps you have one you'd be willing to donate? or perhaps =
you have an exhaustive supply of parts I could use to build one?), by =
all means, write to me and we can work out the details, otherwise, =
please keep your judgments about poorer people and what should be done =
to them to yourself. Otherwise, it only makes you look like a bourgeois =
jerk, and there are plenty of those in America who have done their part =
in making the rest of the world see us as Ugly Americans.

Thank you, and have a nice day. *flips a finger skyward*

First of all, you're fucking clueless if you think I was serious about people like you being shot. <roll eyes> Ever heard of sarcasm, sport?

Second, if you can't keep up with computer advances you shouldn't be using software that utilizes them. It's that simple. You don't survive very long in the computer industy by using obsolete hardware. <shrug>

Evolve or die, twit.

I've heard of it, but banality doesn't pass for sarcasm these days. I =

So, tell me, Mr. eep, just how much time, money, or computer hardware =

really walk the walk? Inquiring minds want to know.

As far as evolution goes, I'm certainly way ahead of you on that score, =
Mr. eep. *winks*

There aren't many people around who could keep a P166 with W95v.1 =
running for 5 years and running the latest software on it. Obviously I =

On the other hand, were you as hardware poor as I am, I doubt you'd even =

It seems YOU are the one who had a nerve rattled, sport. You're the one who got all pent up over your pathetically obsolete computer system. <chuckle>

Uh, why would I donate computer equipment to public institutions when it's the government's responsibility? <shrug>

Uh huh...of COURSE you were, twit. <pats your pathetic wittle head> Some "computer operator" YOU are on such an obsolete system. Shut up, twit.

Wrong again...<yawn>

> There aren't many people around who could keep a P166 with W95v.1 running for 5 years and running the latest software on it.

Uh huh...and I bet it ran REAAAALLY fast, too, eh? Shut up, ignoramus.

Aine, welcome to the Filtered-by-Eep club! That was sooner than I thought.
:)

Really eep... why are you deflecting those accusations by zeroing in on
Aine's intelligence level? As far as I know, computer donations are not the
government's responsibility. There is a reason why non-profit goodwill
organizations exist.

Perhaps you should reevaluate some of your values, because you seem to be
increasingly egocentric.

"Seems"? Eep's always been egocentric. :P I guess Eep's attempt at
"trying to be nice on the first go" has failed utterly, so he's
reverting to his old "shoot first (No pun intended...), ask questions
later" approach...

During in the days of Facter, everyone was ragging on Eep so much for
picking on people that he said he'd change by kindly informing newbies
of their mistakes instead of going straight for the jugular. If the
newbies persisted in their incompetence, claimed Eep, he would then
proceed to bite their heads off.

But, I guess now that Facter is gone, Eep has decided that he doesn't
need to implement that little personality change and has reverted to the
same old Eep we all know and despise.

I suppose we can take some comfort in knowing that, even in the
high-paced world of technology, some things don't change...
