Finally got Winblows 2K working right... (sighs) If there weren't things I
*needed* Windows for, I would have been perfectly happy to stay in Linux. I
forget how much I like a stable operating environment :-)

The funniest part of this whole situation, though, was that I managed to get
the Code Red worm last night LOL :D

In my fervor to get everything set up after 2K started working, I forgot to
unplug the LAN cable before I enabled IIS5 and got the patch
installed...within about 45 seconds, both the TX and RX lights started
blinking feverishly, and the firewall went absolutely nuts. (Note: a
firewall is useless when you *have* to have the affected communications port
open <G> ) I knew what happened immediately, shut the computer down, and
just started formatting that partiton again. Wasn't even worth trying to
figure out what types of back-door issues I may have encountered.

So, now I'm running a completely different web server that is not affected
by the worm. Don't know why I didn't think of doing that in the first place
this time around ;-)

From what I've heard, Win2K (and NT in general) are more stable and just "better" than the whole line of 9x OSes for many things. What do you mean by "cant do things like windows 98 can"?

Windows 2000 does not have the general software support for most programs.
That means if you install a game or image editor, there's a chance that some
incompatibility with Windows 2000 will goof it up. Another reason why XP is
"a good upgrade". If you want some good information, wait till you get a
program that requires XP to run before you upgrade. It might save you a bit
of money. After a few months you can search for deals on operating systems
and get them cheaper sometimes.

I've been running Windows 2000 for months, and I have barely seen any software compatibility issues that concerns me. 3D performance actually improved on my machine. A lot of it depends on quality of hardware. I'm not downgrading to Windows XP anyways, because it's another 25% slower than MS' LAST operating system.

Ummm... *cough* with only a very few exceptions, Windows 2000 will run
pretty much anything that 9x will - and do it better ;-)

NT is muuuuuuuuuch more stable! on my NT server that runs quite a lot (not
hooked up to any network though, only serves itself for the moment lol) I
haven't seen a **SINGLE** crash! Even though some apps have crashed, NT
itself is so stable that it keeps running, you just use the program manager
to terminate whatever app that crashed... I have at least 1 daily OS crash
on my Win98 SE computer (that I use right now), just to show the difference
in stability...

Mask, Windows 2000 may be a little more picky when it comes down to
hardware support, DirectX gaming, and getting legacy apps to work
correctly, but overall it seems to be a better OS than Windows9x/ME
(*if* configured correctly ;). If you have Win 2K Service Pack 2
installed, you can run a program in "compatibility mode" and emulate Win
95, 98, or NT 4. It doesn't work on *every* program or old game, but it
has worked on some I've tried. The NT kernel is *much* more stable than
the Win 9x/ME one, and Win 2K has better memory management.

It won't run my games. I've talked to other Window-philes. :)

I don't think I will "upgrade" to WindowsXP when it comes out due to the
activation procedures. If you install too much new hardware you have to
re-activate it for it to work. I read somewhere that you only get 4(?)
activations.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but XP is REALLY crossing the line.

Heh, they tested the system in Aussie with Office 2k, they didn't complain. Now us hardware saavy Americans are gonna be stuck with
it. A CPU swap ALONE (An overclocking adjustment counts as a CPU swap, the computer doesn't know the difference) is enough to set
off the reactivation deal, and honestly, once a day is a little much. So, I'm off to Win2k and eventually (Once AWC wises up) to
Linux.

Also, even if you just move around your existing hardware, Windows treats it as new hardware. So, like a few days ago when I juggled
my PCI cards to get ATA100 working, I'd have to reactive XP.

And a slower filesystem, stick to FAT32 unless you need the encryption.

Doesn't windows 2000 run on either file system? You lose features if you go
with Fat32, but you shouldn't need them anyways unless you're some sort of
IT guy.

What games, out of curiosity? I've had little to no trouble with most of the
stuff I play - the exception being DOS-based games, of course ;-)
