I noticed with the new 4.1 zones, that when you enter a zone that has
altered lighting, it just snaps in right away. Would it be possible to add
a transition period, in metres, so the browser will actually animate the
gradual change into the zone, based on the distence of the transition within
that zone.

I think it would really help ;)

If implemented, it should be optional, because for some uses, it might
be preferred to have it "snap in".

In which case, you would put transitional range 0 and 0 :P
