Plug-Ins (Wishlist)
Plug-Ins // WishlistweeboJul 17, 2003, 11:02pm
Hey, what y'all think about having the ability to write plug-in programs on
the menu say under the Options | spacer under Universe | Plug-Ins | your program,,,this way could write scripts and things to help customize the browser at the user level. I can see AWI shaking their heads lol. Weebs legionJul 17, 2003, 11:40pm
Wasn't this idea once discussed before in maybe old wishlist newsgroup. I
remember there was thread about that but I guess it's gone because it's older than the earliest existing thread on this newsgroup or any of newsgroup. Anyway, I remember that there are some numbers of ppl's posting there, stating their opposition or whatever that is. Why is that, well I don't know. I have no idea why it has gotten some criticism. But I guess, since the old thread concerning plug-in is long gone, we can make a new discussion about it, especially since that a considerable time has passed and things changes so you never know! :) -- Legion A Mafiaso.... A lot of good ideas were "lost" or ignored that were posted ages ago in
various newsgroups, not just wishlist. I think Eep kept a record of some of them on his site, but there are still many more that have vanished. As for being opposed to plug-ins: think of the people that download bots from unsafe sources (for example, M A T T's malicious bot). Now imagine if there was a plug-in or add-on that could be used in the browser or the world server that could send passwords out, allow anyone CT access, "piggyback" on other data, etc. There would need to be some type of limit to what it could do, or else some real nasty stuff will be going around. I'm not on the beta team and can't get into NewAW, but I heard rumors that there is a plug-in for the world server that AWI is using for it. I'd love to see plug-ins or an add-on feature, but security will need to be a priority if it is to be implemented correctly. Builderz http://www.3dhost.net [View Quote] tony mJul 18, 2003, 6:16am
If a plugin system is created, it should offer the ability to be disabled, and be disabled by default (i.e., a clean install). Restricting what it does are also required security options :)

you don't need AWI's permission to do this....just "sub-class" the browser and add anything you want to the AWB menu system.
For instance I can write a VB app that adds "Run Leo's Proggy" to the Help menu of the AW browser and when you select it it would run any app I tell it to....or even make a call to "rundll" :) Just food for thought...:) Leo :) [View Quote] binarybudJul 23, 2003, 11:25am
John......Do a Google on it search for "sub classing" & " VB"
Lots of info there to get you started.... Actually Dan Appleman has some great routines you can buy to jump start you on this also...:) [View Quote] |
