Passworded Maximum World Limit? (Wishlist)
Passworded Maximum World Limit? // Wishlist
Oct 28, 2002, 9:35am
Seeing all of the discussion about why community about the Gor worlds
maybe AW can consider putting a passworded world limit on the browser so
that parents can make sure their kids aren't getting into world higher than
maybe PG? I'm personally not a fan of Gor but it would further help keep
kids out and shut some people up about the safety of the Gor worlds since
now parents can have control over their kids world abilities. Almost like
parental controls on AOL... I think it would be an EXTREMELY easy feature
to implement into the AW browser, and it wouldn't really be a waste of
space. :)))

That wouldn't work very well since I doubt many parents install AW for their kids. If they don't, then all one has to do is set the limit to 'X' and password that.
Passwording isn't going to solve the "problem", anyway; parents should be with their kids while online if they don't think they're able to handle things they might see.

Now you know why parents don't install AW for their kids. There's no way to
limit ratings of worlds and such.
While they're at it, it'd be nice if they could add something like a parser
for image URLs. It could check the image URL for a list of words and if any
of those words are in there, it won't download the image. I'd use that
because I don't particularly like finding pornographic images all over the
place when I'm just adventuring through AW. Also, another simple thing would
be to make a list of words that would be censored in the chat.
Obviously, those features would be optional.

Oh come on most kids in AW can already hack the damn browser, what good is a passworded rating going to do.

to the other 70% that are smart enough to download. about 20% of them which
may actually find the distribution.
You exaggerate the intelligence of teens. The ones you know are intelligent
but er... noone else is and there's a lot more :-P

With a program that has a rating control that can block out worlds with a
higher ratting yet has no password protection on the feature no wonder no
serious businesses or large scale educational networks have not taken it
seriously. since that's where the money is when it comes to numbers not to
mention that most kids parents would pay for citizenship for there kids if
there felt they had some level of control over where there kids were hanging
out online that currently say no. Sure there will always be the few that try
to bend the rules but the few don't pay the bills the masses do. the
universe may be in VR but its time real world issues on child safety were
addressed if the business is ever going to expand and grow.

No, he is correct. Teenagers are that smart.
I use to "edit" the browser all the time :)

Well, if this was a feature, it would be saved in the Aworld.ini file, which
would be like
[settings]
blah
blah
blah
pass=password (encrypted?)
blah
blah
all you gotta do is delete a bit of it and bam...
If it was in the browser, it would be very hard to set it in the browser or
anything but still could be cheated.
Don't say kinds won't know. I am 13 myself.

Is it possible to put the password in like a dll or something? AW Checks for
the DLL and if no password has been entered than there is something in the
dll instead of a blank dll. (so that you can't just delete the old one and
create a new empty dll file)

The password will be saved on the AW server, and you will HAVE to enter a
password when you enter AW for the 1st time, otherwise it won't let you sign
in. And the usage of older browser versions have to be banned, otherwise one
could use them to get around the password protection. Tourists should not be
able to enter any world above PG since they can't have a password.

Woah, another great idea to keep tourists out of worlds =P. AW will probably
do it just for more money ROFL. Otherwise, that sounds like a pretty good
idea

This DLL could be replaced with an evil DLL that can trash your system. Bad idea.
