AW hogs sound (Wishlist)
AW hogs sound // Wishlist
Feb 21, 2001, 7:43pm
Well, since I can't post in beta, guess this'll have to do:
disabling AW's sound should free up the sound device for other non-DirectSound apps
Feb 21, 2001, 10:04pm
Even other DirectSound apps don't want to start playing sound while AW is
running. Seems to happen regardless of sound settings. Go figure.
DirectSound programs tested: Winamp w/ DirectSound output plugin, Tribes in
DirectSound mode.

Uh, Windows 98's Media Player is a DirectSound app and it can play WAVs just fine with AW running and its sounds enabled. Non-DirectSound apps like Windows' Sound Recorder, Cool Edit, and GoldWave can't play sounds with AW running, regardless if WAVs are disabled in it. In AW3 if I wanted to play a sound in another app (DirectSound or not), I could simply disable AW's WAVs from the settings and the other apps would work fine. With AW 3.1 that is no longer the case.

Try restarting AW, because I haven't ever had that problem, because mine is
always turned off :P

Idiots are plentiful these days, what would we do without them?
Geniuses are rare, but what would it be like without them?
That's is the question.

No effect, predictably so. Do you even know what a DirectSound app is, Crazy? I doubt it...

Actually, I do. I use winamp regularly, with the Direct Sound plug-in, and I
did use Windows Media or whatever. When did I ever ask if you knew what it
was?

i've yet to have the problem with it "hogging sound" to begin with.. if you
face a problem with this it is most likely your computer.. don't blame aw
for your having a crappy sound card/drivers...

Crappy sound cards/drivers aren't the issue here. I use a Creative Labs
SoundBlaster Live! Value, which is industry standard. All drivers are
updated, and yet this problem still occurs. AW makes bad use of DirectSound,
that's the problem, not the hardware in this case.

In fact, just to prove this, I gathered all my audio hardware and brought it
over to this system to do some comparison testing. Here are the results.
SoundBlaster Live! Value in PCI slot 2: Sound "hogged"
Asus A7V Onboard AC '97 Audio Codec properly enabled via Jumpers: Sound
"hogged"
Creative SoundBlaster 16 ISA (Tested on different system due to my lack of
an ISA slot): Sound "hogged"
Ensoniq AudioPCI (Manufactured before Creative purchased this line) in PCI
slot 2: Sound "hogged"
Tyan Trinity S1598 onboard audio (model unknown) enabled in BIOS: Sound
"hogged"
The specs on the two systems I tested this on are as follows:
For the Asus A7V and all PCI sound cards:
Asus A7V (KT133) with onboard audio, 3 of the 5 extra USB ports installed,
neither the modem or LAN risers installed
AMD Duron 700 at 950MHz (FSB: 100MHz, multiplier: 9.5)
64mb PC133
Maxtor 20gb hard drive, 15gb free, unlimited swapfile
For Tyan Trinity S1598 and ISA cards:
Tyan Trinity S1598
AMD K6-2 550
64mb PC100
Western Digital 2gb hard drive, 250mb free, unlimited swapfile
These are obviously two completely opposite systems, and a wide range of
Audio equipment, ranging from complete lameness (Tyan onboard sound) to
l33tness (Live! Value). The software tested was the same, Activeworlds 3.1
and Winamp v2.71 in DirectSound mode (I know it's not the latest version,
but it was the version on my CD 'o Installers)

By "hog" we mean that AW is the only sound playable at the time. With older
sound cards this is normal behavior anyway as they support one, maybe 2 wavs
at a time (WAV includes wav files and all their variations such as MP3s and
DirectSound), but it sounds really cheezy when you try to listen to an MP3
on a $150 sound card. Ultima Online client version 2.0.3 also does this, but
this isn't the UO newsgroup is it? :)
