We can play MID files from within AW, but what about support for MOD, XM,
S3M, MTM etc? I have a lot of <100kb MOD files that would be nice in my
town. The XM and S3M files I have are way too big, but I suppose that there
are small ones out there, too.

[View Quote] Hey all;

I have been experimenting with some of the myriad of encoding formats in the wav
file family. Specifically, I've been looking for a format that: "tastes great",
is "less filling", and people have drivers to decode it. So far for music
quality wav files, 22k samples/sec, 8 bit, and mono seems like about the minimum
quality to use if you want to be able to tell that it is a cymbal the drummer is
using to keep time (example). Within those constraints there are many formats,
with PCM and the various CODECs creating very close to the same file sizes.
There are a few encoding techniques that seem to use a variable sample size or
use some other lossy compression technique. Most sound so nasty I cannot figure
out what they could have been created for.

I should have some time this weekend to call my ISP's tech support to *finally*
learn how to FTP up to some of those megabytes of server space I've had included
with my account. I hope to set up a little listening station so people can give
me their opinion how stuff sounds.

Stay tuned...
