Not a very good idea. Actually even a very bad idea, as
some might want to keep their version. There isn't only
ActiveWorlds but a lot of universes, all with different
universe and world server versions.

Well it can be made into an option. Maybe it could even be in a menu
somewhere so that you can click it and it will run an updater program.
Otherwise, it would just do the normal stuff it does when started.

download and apply it.

Does it REALLY take that much effort for some people to apply a patch?

Just a suggestion... XelaG has said more than once in the past that if
you have any feature requests or bugs to report, please do so via
e-mail. You can e-mail him at xelag at 3dee.nl or xelag at digitalspace.com.
He probably does not have the time to read each user's reply in the
newsgroups or to read and reply to everyone's personal telegrams. I have
e-mailed him in the past and have received very quick responses.

Not really, but its easier to have something run in the background auto on load up, than to goto a web page, download, unzip, etc...

Since you have to redownload the entire program (including a lot of files that aren't even modified), then is it really considered a patch? It makes more sense to me to just have a simple upgrade utility download only the upgraded files and install them rather than senselessly (re)downloading the whole kit-n-kaboodle.

Well you obviously believe in other people making your life redulously easy
at the expense of their own (often precious) spare time. I'm glad I'm not
one of your friends. Words like "senselessly" in the context you use it are

Um, I wasn't trying to be disrespectful to anyone. I just asked a question and explained what made sense to me in terms of good design. I never meant to offend anybody, and if I did, then I'm sorry.

The reason is quite simple:

I update the bot at random moments, when I have time or when I
discover a bug which needs inmediate attention.

There are tens of versions of x1 and other xelagots around, making a
separate patch for each (or one that covers all) is not practical.
Some people run several versions on their computer or servers, so you
see the mess of making this automatic upgrade system... Compare with
the aw browser: if you have missed a few upgrades, you have to
download several times patches... if I did that, you might want to
download 30 patches from version 2.999999 or so to the current one :)

Anyway, I don't have time for this, I prefer to dedicate the time I
have to enhance the Xelagot :)

Only in beta do you download a whole group of different upgrades. It's not really a
patch system per se from what I can tell, it just replaces all the key files with the
newer versions? Maybe my knowledge of what patches are is backwards.
