What exactly does the "Empty Local Cache" option do? // CommunitykennethJun 27, 2006, 6:37pm
The other day I tried to use the "Empty Local Cache" option in the Downloads
window by right clicking within that little window. Then I closed AW and looked in my Cache directory and still found all the worlds I've been to and all their artwork. The only thing I think it does is delete the cache from the world you click it in. Or does it delete anything else? I guess the only reason that it doesn't have it delete the entire cache is because it would most likely be too much to copy all the cache to a temporary directory before it deletes it all when you shut AW off. Windows cannot delete files that it is currently using which is why it uses a temporary directory I heard. -Kenneth jaguar hahnJun 27, 2006, 6:44pm
I used it when I was in AWTeen and it warped me to GZ, where apparently all
of the cache was deleted. The world proceeded to sort of 'reload' for me. I find it useful :) but I still like to empty my cache the other way. [View Quote] sweetsJun 27, 2006, 6:58pm
for people like me that make objects this new feature is a godsend....
It means you are emptying the cache of the world that you are in....without having to shut down, or re-login. I works fantastic for me....and am extremely please that AW finally got us a 'delete local cache button'.... I empty cache for our world sometimes 3 or 4 times a day....to be sure the new objects are correct, loaded right, changed....this saves a pile of time is also fantastic if we do an avatars.dat change or other changes....less inconvenient to people when we ask them to cache dump our world...They do not have to close, or leave......just reload (which is bad enough heh) thanks AW sweets baroJun 27, 2006, 7:04pm
I'd LOVE a specific list of all the objects in your world, or something
in the building interface that you could "reload this object" or texture or what ever, and jsut that item. legionJun 27, 2006, 8:32pm
This "empty local cache" option has already been discovered back in
Stagecoach Island. I'm surprised there are still other folks discovering like they never had known of it. Or did somebody who discovered it first time prior to AW 4.1 universe's opening failed to post about that particular feature in newsgroup? O_O However, you did make a good point that it only deleted cache of the world you were last in prior to invoking that option. We intitally assumed that it would do for the entire universe, because Stagecoach Island only had ONE world back then so we never found out this assumption to be mistaken until Active Worlds 4.1 universe popped up ALMOST a month ago (w00t at upcoming first month anniversary of 4.1 public / general release. ;)). well I only went to Stagecoach once.....and didnt get that deep into it
We had wanted it for years, and I had heard it was coming....and I had asked when I got to 4.1 how to do it or where it was....nobody seemed to know what I was talking about. I figured it had not come. I found out how few days ago..... some things you know about some of us may be a bit slow in finding....even with the newsgroups....not a lot of us followed the threads of Stagecoach as it was not our system....ya know sweets lady nighthawkJun 27, 2006, 10:19pm
You don't need to close aw browser after you use that function ... it may
take a moment or two but it will delete and reinstall the cache (I believe it's only for the world you are in at the time but not sure of that ... never tested it). LNH [View Quote] kennethJun 27, 2006, 10:42pm
Yes, I guess I worded myself a bit confusing. I tried it and it
automatically deletes the world you are in and it automatically starts reloading that world as soon as you do it. I just meant that if you want the older cache (that is copied to a temporary folder) completely off your computer, I think you will have to turn AW off, but I could be wrong. -Kenneth [View Quote] mauzJun 28, 2006, 9:08am

If they prefer not to delete their cache, you could just ask them to leave
and come back, AW 4.1 handles avatars.dat changes better than before (added detection if avatars.dat was modified whenever entering a world). -- Mauz http://mauz.info lady nighthawkJul 2, 2006, 6:23am
Whenever I do a new av dat I just copy old to another folder as a backup, I
also copy the new one in case something goes funky. But yes, browser does auto refresh avs now, no more closing aw, dumping (deleting the av dat, assuming you can find it), restarting aw ... those painful days are gone :o} Thanks Chrispeg, you KNOW that is one of my fav *new* features!
