So, anyway, i was in selfridges(mall/gallarie type thing here in london)
today, looking for a laptop for me and my sister, when boom, i saw it, the MacBook pro, and see, i'm like, the definition of impulse buyer, so make a long story short, i'm now on a mac laptop, trying to set everything up before i travel to libya this thursday. Anyway, so anyone know any good news readers? can't find any! they all suck! and anyone know anything i can use to run AW? i have bootcamp, but don't have a copy of windows xp pro service pack 2, so need a temp solution. anyone know any good like, emulators or whatever? just for a temp solution. as for the newsgroup reader thing, using netscape currently, but from what i can tell, it's shit. doesn't even group the damn messages >_< oh, anyone have any mac tips? new to it :). and is it just me, or is everything so much prettier! -SWE angelicusMay 30, 2006, 8:26pm
Well you can use firefox for newsgroup, I believe that works on a Mac but I
could be wrong. I could be wrong but doesn't the AW browser work on a Mac? If You want a copy of Service Pack 2, then go to the microsoft site, and look for it under the networking/administrator area. There should be an exe file so you can download service pack 2. As for a PC emulator, you could try going to www.download.com, and see if they have anything. http://www.macwindows.com/emulator.html - is a emulator site, they seem to have free emulators Hope this helps Angelicus [View Quote] sweMay 30, 2006, 9:39pm
thanks, will check out the emulators, but AW is PC only.
As for service pack 2, well, with apple bootcamp, you have to have the installation cd, that includes service pack 2, all on 1 installation disk. no need for the add in or anything, which is pretty much the problem in my case. God, if apples weren't so pretty, i'd swope laptops with the one i got for my sister >_< maybe i'll be best off checking it out tomorrow, got an exam in 9 and a half hours which i haven't even started studying for. woo for me! -SWE [View Quote] makiMay 30, 2006, 9:46pm

Get in a delayed mindset. Things won't happen for a few seconds after you do
them. Although, I would hope the newer Macs don't have that delayed reaction :) And yes, everything is prettier. Maki Kato Support AW sweMay 30, 2006, 10:10pm
Lol, nope, these too have the delay thing, the icon sort of hopes around
a little first, as if not sure whether it should load or not, and then it loads. :) oh well, until i get my wireless router fixed, aw isn't the most important thing, and when i get a new router, will just continue using it on my desktop. but my god, the back lit keyboard, the backlit apple, and the fact that the monitor has an auto-dim type thing, are just freaking awesom ^_^ thats why i love them, they thought of everything, like, how the hinge to lock the laptop when you fold it, doesn't come out until right at the end. helps that it makes it that much harder to break, and the magnetic charger ^_^ lol, love it. -SWE [View Quote] angelicusMay 30, 2006, 10:23pm
Ok, well I have downloaded it, and put it onto disc, but I am afraid I am no
MAC expert, so I am unable to know how you would do it. Good luck, if you need any more help just ask. I may be able to help you out. [View Quote] sweMay 30, 2006, 10:57pm
oo, wait, you got windows working on a mac, and not a service pack 2
version? O_O think i should give it a go then :) or actually, might aswell wait until thursday when i'm in libya, and go out and buy a copy of XP pro, with SP2. oh, you by any chance know how to get the newsgroup in firefox to group all the similiar posts together? for me, it's just a list of everysingle post, in the order it was sent >_< -SWE [View Quote] sweMay 30, 2006, 10:58pm
whoop, figured it out, nevermind. all i had to do was choose "threaded"
in the options toolbar lol. angelicusMay 30, 2006, 11:09pm
If you are going to use an emulator, then you may not need windows on there.
The emulator may fool aw into thinking it's on windows, just a thought. I personally have not put windows on a MAC, but I have burnt windows XP Pro +SP2 onto a disc and ran it from there, now I don't know if this will work for a MAC [View Quote] sweMay 31, 2006, 12:22am
oo, well, na, don't think that would work in my case. emulators are far
too slow, and the CD has the be the retail XP, SP2 version, but thanks for the input :) ya, guess i'll just wait a few days and do it while back home :) mrmehMay 31, 2006, 3:29am
lol im probly late but welcome to the mac family,
now your child has "special" needs ok enough of that crap for the time being good emulators VirtualPC = microsoft and expensive GuestPC = good i run it on my g3, g4 imac and my ibook and they all run aw fine, it even allows you to choose which os to instal from win 3.1 - xp, linux or other im not to shure on the option lol. once again welcome to the family and be warned vodka and mac do not mix unless you like your computer shooting sparks at you MrMeh - resident drunk [View Quote] blueguyMay 31, 2006, 4:10am
I was under the impression that since Macs went INTEL, that emulation of the
OS had been... ahem... solved satisfactorily. Are we saying this is not the case? Again, I was under the impression that all new Macs under the Intel guise also came with built in Windows emulator... I am now guessing that I was duped? I am... at this time... grateful for my distrust... as in I have always wanted a Mac except for... its certain limitations... which... well, I had been led to believe had been solved. :) [View Quote] sweMay 31, 2006, 4:22am
yep, solved, but, see, to run windows on a mac, you haave to have a
version of the windows cd that comes prepacked with the SP2, and i don;t, so was looking for a quick solution, but oh well, i don't mind waiting now :) will let you know if it goes well. -SWE sweMay 31, 2006, 4:23am
thank you, just hoping i didn't make a mistake lol. but god are they
pretty, well, will just wait and get windows xp with sp2 lol, figured, hey, might as well. :) thanks though :) SWE > mrmehMay 31, 2006, 6:56am
lol i fell in love with a sexy black machine today the new powerbook <3 lol
but i will have to sort out my ibook first but lol now gnu32 and i will have someone else to converse about macs with. As for bootcamp i am yet to try it for that sole reason i dont have xp with sp2 :( congrats on your adoption again :P mrmeh -resident drunk [View Quote] mrmehMay 31, 2006, 7:00am
i mean macbook X_X lol, but you have to admit its one sexy piece of
machinery MrMeh -Resident Drunk [View Quote] sweMay 31, 2006, 3:24pm
lol, was wondering about that black powerbook thing.
but should have went powerbook pro, love it! sexy too. but ya same, waiting to get XP sp2, and ya,will be nice to have someone to talk to about the macs, so, you use AW on the emulator right? -SWE [View Quote] simplaza.netMay 31, 2006, 5:50pm
Time to prance about like the TUAW reader i am (The Unoffical Apple
Weblog, not the University AW ;) ) 2 words: Parallels Workstation Virtual PC and GuestPC are dead, seeing as they're only for PowerPC. Using them on Rosetta = emulating a mac emulating a mac emulating windows But of course, you still need windows XP, but with parallels, you can just create a disk image from your old windows installation http://www.parallels.com/ But, if you don't want to go through that, then the only other approach is doing it the linux way: Wine Or, more specifically, Darwine http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Darwine http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/ is a great site for technical resources And finally, welcome aboard. The following sites are great for mac resources: www.tuaw.com for your daily fix of mac cult goodies, along with software news osx.hyperjeff.net/apps/ for a great up-to-date application library www.joyoftech.com for your apple humor ;) Emergency exists can be found with me or MrMeh Enjoy simplaza.netMay 31, 2006, 5:56pm
Oh yeah, newsreaders are nowhere to be found on Macland. I use

Well, my laptop doesn't have a latch at all. :P I do like those though as I
was always attracted to the Powerbook. Never got the motivation to switch though. Maybe next laptop I'll go for a MacBook! :) Maki Kato Support AW sweMay 31, 2006, 6:48pm

lol gnu hence why i only have guest pc on my g3 and g4 :P and it dont
bother me seeing as my g5 is in the shop again, but its a tough cookie that one. Last month I had a party and it was sitting on my bench and some prick knocked it off and well bye bye mac it just needed a new screen then i replaced it with a Intel G5 but is started shooting sparks at me so back to the mothership for you X_X [View Quote] mrmehMay 31, 2006, 8:25pm
i did it again X_X i forgot to add, yes aw works fine under the emulators
but as gnu said the dead for the intels :( [View Quote] byteMay 31, 2006, 8:59pm
Welcome aboard, I've had my MacBook Pro since the first day it came out. :)
Anyway, you could either emulate (I'd suggest Parallels, don't kon wht URL) if you can't do Bootcamp. As for news readers, look into Thunderbird (e-mail client) it should run on OS X just fine. :) [View Quote] sweJun 3, 2006, 9:59am
Lol, sounds like you've had your fair share of problems.
but ya, i need to find me an original version of XP pro sp2, turns out the one we had here is an update, and i'm in libya, so original Windows is not something you can go out and bye, plus the fake versions won't work with bootcamp >_< anyone know anyway around that? :) just as a temp solution until i'm back in england and buy an original. -SWE sweJun 3, 2006, 10:12am
thanks :) but boy, is getting online a pain, had to set up a wireless
network through my dad's laptop, which is connected to the internet. anyone know how to use an adsl usb modem? got a sagem f at st 800 one here, but won't work for some reason. drivers for it just won't work. and ya, downloading a trial of parrallels to check it out, thanks :) oh, and ya, already using thunderbird. -SWE angelicusJun 3, 2006, 7:30pm
Try downloading a trial version, and using a crack
Has worked for me in the past. Could also try using a file share program to get a copy. Just an idea ;) [View Quote] simplaza.netJun 3, 2006, 8:36pm
Trial version?
Stop right there, first you thought you could just download windows from the offical site. Don't go off on any other silly things. And yes, filesharing ftw (bittorrent) [View Quote] angelicusJun 3, 2006, 9:07pm
