Lurking (Community)
Lurking // Communityscented nectarMay 20, 2006, 3:52am
Sometimes I like to just lurk in chat areas like AW ground zero, not
speaking with my name not showing to others. Other times I like to chat, but it's the lurking that's got me confused. Twice now, when I've gone to the Gate, tourists were able to see my name over my head when I hadn't yet spoken. Is the Gate set up to show everyone's name even if they're lurking? If so, no big deal, I can re-log in as a tourist for my antisocial lurking. :) -- Scented Nectar http://www.scentednectar.com/aw/ strike rapierMay 20, 2006, 3:59am
Yes, show all avatars is enabled.

Yes, once upon a time you used to be able to go to AW Gate and.... be
annonymous.... but no more. If you go there, everyone will be able to see your name. Personally I have found the change to be irritating. I came to rely on the annominity, especially after reinstalling the browser... even on friends machines hundreds of miles away from my own home... in order to show them other worlds. I don't like the change, but there is little, if nothing, we can do about it. scented nectarMay 20, 2006, 4:22am
Thanks. I was quite surprised when it happened! I'll log in as a rude
tourist of some name or another when I feel like sipping coffee instead of joining in the conversation. [View Quote] scented nectarMay 20, 2006, 4:26am

I don't like it either, but I guess if I really need to, I can re-log in as
a tourist. I'll just have to think of some new names. :) -- Scented Nectar http://www.scentednectar.com/aw/ talisanMay 20, 2006, 4:29am
Yes indeed, it does encourage us to be something other than we are. Why do
they encourage us to be tourists when they obviously want us to be citizens? It's a mystery! Although I have no intent of leaving AW, I am reducing, severely, my activities within it. This however is only 1 very small reason. But, all the reasons combined are having a large impact on my desires. I think some serious thought needs to be made into AW policy. talisanMay 20, 2006, 4:33am
Well, you shouldn't have to. You paid for an account, and you should have
the right to make it public or private. Instead, they are making you login as a tourist for your privacy... which is absurd. > I don't like it either, but I guess if I really need to, I can re-log in > as a tourist. I'll just have to think of some new names. :) baroMay 20, 2006, 5:32am
Some could argue you hiding and listening to them was an affront to
their privacy. I kinda like to know who I'm talking to, and if you don't want to talk or be seen.. why are you there at all? sweMay 20, 2006, 8:09am
ooo, oooo, your tourist name could be smelly juice! ^_^
but anyway, just a hint, you can goto Options>World >Features in the tool bar, and check there what options are enabled or disabled. -SWE scented nectarMay 20, 2006, 4:20pm

I'm doing just the opposite, recently having come back to AW after years
away. My AW related activities have skyrocketed. I'm seriously addicted again. :) But I would like the option of whether my name shows or not to other cits and tourists. -- Scented Nectar http://www.scentednectar.com/aw/ scented nectarMay 20, 2006, 4:20pm

Sometimes I like to use AW as an interesting chat thing to just watch but
not participate in, other than as a spectator. There are times when I just am not feeling chatty, but I still want to follow the conversations for a while because they are enjoyable. I can find some conversations interesting the same way reading a book is, as a silent audience. scented nectarMay 20, 2006, 4:20pm

LOL, Smelly Juice, I like it! That's a good one.

That's up to the 'host' of the world you are currently in, as it should be.

You just choose to not answer. More often than not if a Cit doesn't reply to
a tourist, another Cit will tell the tourist that Cit must be AFK. Or you can give a brief greeting and say BRB. I go to TheGate a lot and just watch the chat scroll by, cuz I'm not up to chatting but I want the company. Sometimes I'll log in as a tourist, but after being a Cit I find that annoying. rofl [View Quote] baroMay 20, 2006, 5:36pm
Or just set your self to afk. As long as yo don't fly around to ruin
your cover, people will ignore you. [View Quote] scented nectarMay 20, 2006, 6:24pm
I think I'll just log in as a tourist. I don't want to hurt anyone's
feelings (why isn't she talking to me?). [View Quote] scented nectarMay 20, 2006, 6:27pm
I'll just pop in as an anonymous tourist. It's not really that big of a
deal. Might prevent some world-hopping though. -- Scented Nectar http://www.scentednectar.com/aw/ [View Quote] lady nighthawkMay 20, 2006, 6:45pm
No worries hun, you wouldn't be the first LOL, take note of how many other
cit lurkers there are! BTW tourists can't see the whisper box in AWGate so they wouldn't know you were there if you hang out just out of sight ... the globe is a good spot, you are nearby but can't be seen (can see out tho :o}), only cits would know you are there but most even if they say hi and you don't answer don't give it much thought. Be who you are, use your cit, you paid for it ... just hang out and lurk, tis your perogative, many others do! :o} Hugzzz Lady NightHawk [View Quote] scented nectarMay 20, 2006, 10:05pm
I'll keep on lurking. :) It was just a shock being outed like that, when I
thought I was anonymous looking. [View Quote] makiMay 20, 2006, 11:07pm
It's been that way for a long time and I don't think it's a big deal. Just
ignore people, they'll move on. It's not that way everywhere anyway - your choice to lurk in the Gate. :) Maki Support AW [View Quote] scented nectarMay 20, 2006, 11:45pm
The Gate and Aw seem the 2 most likely places to find lots of interesting
conversations due to the large numbers of people there. I only lurk once in a while though, so if it's the Gate, I'll just pop in as a tourist. [View Quote] |
