I dont get it. It must have been recent because the 'world ratings' are on
the worlds list.

[View Quote] I think Castles was still kind of around back in 2003, when that screenshot was probably taken - minus the right column ;)

By the way, I have never seen thousands of users in AW.
Here are some of the highest numbers I could find:
http://mauz.info/awpics1997/AW-19970930-8.jpg
http://mauz.info/awpics1997/Transcen-19971023-5.jpg
Those were taken with AW version 1.3, from September 1997.
In earlier builds there was no Worlds list to see the user amount in the first place.

Yes it been gone a while . I remember it used to be a meeting place for all
of Bells friends and also others would come and chat. There were more
people in AW I think. Does anyone really know how many active cits there
still are in AW?

Bell has her own Galaxy now and a lot of the "old timers" still come there
although it's been pretty quite this past summer. But we still see
Yosemite and moonie and Sir Ron and Sir Ivan and Blaize and LadyJane and
Lady Asia and Eagle and Christopher and KayBerry and Ladychats and others.
You can download Castles at www.belladora.com
Bell has a Christmas Sale going on with her Paintings at 50% off.

Blame it on AWi for charging $70 for cit accounts and not allowing tourist.
That's why Bell left. She used to have tourist and cits come in Castles
all the time to chat and also to buy her paintings.
She was also responsible for a lot of tourist becoming cits.
It just became a lot more cost effective for her to buy a Galaxy.

Ahem...

From what I know about the creation of AW Help files, the pictures weren't
always updated version to version.

That snapshot of the worlds list is probably from 3.2 or earlier ... I also
attribute a couple of factors to that gihugic user count:

1. Influx of Users from JunoDome
2. AW Cit price was about $20 a year :)

So.. what we have here is general economics. When AW charged users $20 a
year to be a citizen, many thousands populated the universe, across many
worlds, thus attracting large contracts like Juno Internet to make up the
cost difference as a corporate contract.

Something apparently went horribly wrong with the Juno contract (a falling
out) and the result was a rediculous loss of money for AW. To make up for
the crippling mistake, and recoup costs, AW raises cit prices to $70.00 per
year with a letter to their users saying something like "we're sorry, but if
we don't increase the price there will not be any other versions of AW"

Problem is... when prices were raised to recoup the costs, user counts
dropped dramatically... anyone out there who contests this look at the
difference between over 3,000 active cits and currently about 1,000 today
(tops). AW is generally making the same amount of money from their users as
they did when it was $20 a year.

And so... lesson of economics kicks in again for AW - who is doing Stage
Coach Island for Wells Fargo using 4.1 of their software. Users = Corporate
Participation = Money

Going on the current Users = Money part is a waste of time and effort.

There are better ways to recoup costs and pay bills from users other than
outright charging them.

If AW wants to prove that their software is top of the line - make it free
to the public and put the costs on corporate inclusion. Hence we will again
see numbers like those in previous years, or probably a hell of alot higher,
and more things to see and do in here (companies).

Of course... I cannot even fathom how AW managed to sell the idea of a game
oriented virtual environment to a company like Wells Fargo (a bank)... must
hae been some amazing sales pitches going on... (AW: "Of course, the use of
our software not only whitens your teeth but makes you breakfast in the
morning while printing fresh $100 Bills ...")

I dunno...

emm, i've been in aw since atleast 2.2 or 2.0, and i've never seen 3000
cits, hell, most i remember seeing was probably about 800, and even that i'm
not too sure of. i mean, if they had been having 3000 cits on at a time my
guess is that the new cit numbers would be way higher then the 350,000
numbers they are now.
my guess is that picture had a bit of retouching. so they really only need a
third of the cits they had before to be making more money then they did at
the $20, which i don't doubt they do.

On another point, AW didn't sell the idea to Wells, Linden Lab probably did,
since it was originally on the Secondlife platform.

[View Quote] Cool, can you find a screenshot? Because I don't have such a screenshot
from between June 1995 and the registration fee in October 1997,
when the highest user counts supposedly were. Either there was no Worlds tab,
or then I cropped it from my all pics :/ This was the most I could find:

[View Quote] Yeah I remember occasional 500-figures in 1998, even though AW was already a paysite then.
Or 600-ish during big events like Cys and Avvies. But, still, thousands, every day...?
Hacked bot users don't count either ;)

I'm gonna go with Syntax on this so I will admit the following:

1. I am delusional as well
2. I remember a time when there were thousands of people in AW
3. Ignorance is bliss :)

So while somebody here may very well find out for sure that there never was
3000+ people in here at any given time, I will sit here contently and be
ignorant and delusional :)

Oh yeah... by the way: I'm an orange, too :)

AW is going downhill and 4.1 wont' save it. They need to backtrack and
regroup where tourists are concerned. This is not a programming problem so
there is no need to worry over backwards compatibility.
