You don't have to name names, but what happened? It sounded like it would
have been great fun to meet the AWI staff. :(

from a Reunion 2005 diary.....

August 12, 2005
AWI Fiasco

We were scheduled to go to AWI's home offices for most of the day, with a
pizza party at the end.

Unfortunately, circumstances prevented that from happening due to a
certain committee member. The tour was cancelled, along with the party and
meeting the people of AWI.

I wasn't there but heard about some of the details. I'm really glad I didn't
invest all that money to go there for only "half" of the reunion. I will not
post here all that I heard or who told me, but I WILL say this... not much
effort was put out by AWI staff as far as making the 10th year anniversary
what it was anticipated to be.

If I had spent my hard earned money to go (which I would have had to work
overtime for), knowing that I was sacrificing other responsibilities and
going to all that trouble to arrange for vacation from work... you can bet
yer bippy I would have voiced my disappointments to both parties!!

Imagine coming all that way from another country or from the other side of
the country, only to find out that because of a disagreement amongst the
organizers, half of the group would suffer and both groups would be put in a
position to choose between whom to spend time with. These reunions are all
about meeting each other in person and getting to know people that you
haven't already met in AW. They're all about sharing our love of AW, not
bickering about whose plans are better. There should have been some kind of
compromise made in Boston, instead of division amongst the groups. Sides
should not have been chosen and I don't understand why more people didn't
speak up about it and just accepted the situation. I am very disappointed in
a couple of people who were in the group that were lucky enough to visit
AWI's offices because they KNEW what was going on, and could have said
something to the AWI tourguide within their group, ... they could have
protested or talked the 2 reunion organizers into some kind of
compromise.... but they didn't.

I don't know WHY the 2 organizers were at each other's throats but you'd
think some kind of agreement could have been reached to ensure the
attendee's had a great experience. But unfortunately most of them suffered
great disappointment. The banquet area was pretty much empty and nobody from
AWI came for the dinner. Sure, both groups were given a grand tour but with
a sour feeling for all.

And most importantly, WHY did AWI not accept the one group into their
offices to show them around? From what I heard, lunch was more important to
AWI's staff and the group was to be satisfied just looking in the windows at
the darkened office. >_<

I thought it was rather odd that there seems to be 2 different sets of pics
circulating from the reunion.
Two distinct seperate groups of Cits in each. : ( How silly.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, well. 2006 will be WAY better.
CHICAGO, BABY!!!!!! WOOO HOOOOOO!!!

I wasnt altogether sure how to answer these posts, but I suppose one way is
to simply say that one reason for the "seperate" groups stemmed from how the
plans laid out. No, we did not get to tour the offices at AWI on Friday. As
a result, a bunch of us decided that if AWI had cancelled our tour with
them, WHY in the world would we run up to Newburyport, and attempt to visit
anyway? Seemed kind of silly to a few of us, so we suggested making other
plans and actually *seeing* the historical sites in Boston... Which we kind
of accomplished that day :)

On Saturday, because of a snaffoo in communication and planning (in my
opinion, but I suppose that is up for argument too) by the organizers.
That's my opinion. Roughly half the group did not make it to the Duck tours
in time, because half of us were following the itinerary literally, while
the organizers werent, lol, so as a result, those of us who were carpooling
together to get down to the "T" station (the subway, which seemed like a
better bet to us than trying to find non existant parking in downtown
boston, or driving in that mess for that matter) were.

There were a lot of things that happened at the reunion that I'm sure people
can (and will, or have) had a field day with. However, in my opinion it is
more important where we all go with things in the after glow. I say, if you
are unhappy with how something was done, do it yourself, but there's no
reason to cause a lot of drama while you do it. Being one of the committee
members listed (and one of the primary organizers with Archergirl) I can say
that yes I was displeased with how Boston was organized, but that I would
rather move on a make a progressive stand to create a very well run reunion
experience that will hopefully inspire dozens of people to come to these
reunions from now on. It's just like AW, folks. If a world you visit, or an
organization you're a part of doesn't work to your standards, you don't
gripe, complain, begin flame wars (at least, I would say you shouldn't) -
you get up, and start your own effort to do it better. That's life. That's
what we're doing with Chicago.

And with that..... I would say that anyone and everyone is welcome to come
and join the fun in Chicago, in 2006; even people there were disagreements
with in Boston. Boston, was Boston, and while we had an INCREDIBLY time (I
know I did), and while there was tension between people, it is truly time to
move on. :) Forward thinking always. www.awreunion.com :)

This is the longest post I've made in a while. I hope its coherant.

Thanks,

Poseidon

So in my former post I totally got off track. Let me pick up the pieces,
LOL.

On Saturday, because of a snaffoo in communication and planning (in my
opinion, but I suppose that is up for argument too) by the organizers and we
were left behing. Roughly half the group did not make it to the Duck
tours in time, because half of us were following the itinerary literally,
while the organizers werent, lol, so as a result, those of us who were
carpooling together to get down to the "T" station (the subway, which
seemed like a better bet to us than trying to find non existant parking in
downtown boston, or driving in that mess for that matter) were.

As a result, that day was either going to be wasted hanging around, waiting
for the rest of the group to return from the Duck tours, or spending more
time visiting the historic locations in Boston... What'd we do?! We toured
more of Boston :) We toured Boston, and coming from someone who had never
been to the east coast before, for a first visit, I saw a hell of a lot more
of Boston than I would have, had I gotten caught up in waiting around
because of an error in the itinerary. I'm a proactive individual; when
things go wrong, I generally only like to take about ten minutes freaking
out about it, and then I move on with present company, and work on fixing
the situation, or at least making the best of it. As a result, I had a great
day in downtown Boston with new friends.

*snip!* The rest of the post should continue here now :)

There were a lot of things that happened at the reunion that I'm sure

wow
Well, for the 2006 reunion may I humbly suggest that there be several
itineraries to choose from.
Some things, like meals, could be "non-negotiable" so that everybody touches
base as to what is happening next but Chicago is HUGE, with many different
activites to enjoy. Everything from some of the finest museums in the
country, to the fabulous Navy Pier with all it's shops and a 15 story Ferris
wheel. Architechual tours by boat or by bus of some of the truely
magnificent buildings and skyscrapers designed by some the world's leaders
in design (including Frank Lloyd Wright).
btw, Navy Pier has fireworks every Wednesday and Saturday night. Something
else to consider. : )
and many times there are free concerts in Grant Park, usually given by the
Chicago Symphony Orchastra, and even free classic movies shown in a drive-in
type setting, but you walk in. LOL

You can see 4 states from the top of the Sears Tower. Take a lake cruise on
The Star of Chicago boat. Pack a picnic lunch and eat at the lakefront or in
Grant Park. Visit our zoo in Lincoln Park!!!
Eat at the famous Billy Goat restauant. Cheese burger! Cheese burger! No
fries - Chips!!
There is something for everybody in Chicago.

I'll shut up now, or I'll end up typing a short novel. hehehehe

You should post all that on the forum on the awreunion.com website so we
have a record of it. :P

Anyways, to Lioness,

All I will say is that there are two sides to every story, and the AWI visit
is no exception. I don't blame them for what they did, because given all
the details that I know about it (and there aren't that many), I would have
done the same thing.

Telegram if you've got questions. I can show you only some of the
information as to why my reasoning is this way, but I will not post any here
for fear of starting another flame war. And, I really don't care if anyone
believes it or not. There's no reason to. It's in the past. But anyway,
onward!

We'll see what we can cook up for 2006. A "multi-iternary" is definitely
one of the things that we want to do. And of course, _everyone_ is welcome.
Even the staff.
