Personal avatars (Community)
Personal avatars // CommunityfacterAug 10, 2005, 3:16am
Well, I've been waiting since 1999 for them, and it seems from all rumours
that Personal Avatars will be in 4.1 All i can say is THANKYOU guys. Now, wheres my email reply =P equin0xAug 10, 2005, 6:03am
I wouldn't take it so great.. I don't think they can work out how to make it
all work.. [View Quote] baroAug 10, 2005, 6:28am
upload avatar files, web based thinggy checks for a max file size, rwx
thingy tests for max geometry size (so you can't have a 500x500m flashing cube for an av). That would work. Untill of course someone uploads some X rated AV and some easilly offended types freak out and AW realises it's way too hard to check every av and shuts the thing down? Who knows, I'm sure they'll think of something. facterAug 10, 2005, 8:01am
technically they can do it - they have know how to do it technically for
a long time. The problem, lay in how to go about policing the uploading of avatars. Yuo dont want someone walking with an avatar of a big penis for isntance (although, wouldnt that be great!). But they've been trying to figure out a "way" to monitor how to go aobut the submissions for quite some time now - it was even talked about quite a lot whilst I was still working there - it looks like they have technically implemented it now, and, I have a little more faith in the fact that after four years, they may have figured out a way to properly monitor it. Now that they have technically implemented it into the actual browser, its not so far off that they will get it working in terms of submission - once the tech is there, you make it work. What they are trying to do is have it set on a object path at the universe
scale. Of course, the feature would be an option to dis/enable for the world owners, so that some avatars are not out of place for themed worlds and that some family-orientated worlds are not abused in that way. Yes, I know it will work.. It's just they need to think of some of the things that a few lines of code cannot do, like monitor all the vulnerable results of allowing users to use custom avatars. legionAug 10, 2005, 4:11pm
I doubt... especially considering the fact there ISN'T a reliable method to
prevent any inappropriate avatars from entering Alphaworld (not sure about WildAW though, considering its wild nature. :p ) and not only that but also it's impossible to even prevent such avatars from entering the world so good luck looking for a solution to this problem. :p Sincerely, Godfather Avatar = R-rated [View Quote] strike rapierAug 10, 2005, 4:13pm
Each av would be screened by AWI I think is the plan, and it will probably
cost. Each will get a rating, and world owners will be able to set max rating. I THINK. -- - Mark Randall http://zetech.swehli.com [View Quote] baroAug 10, 2005, 4:27pm
That sounds awfull complex. They'll probably not have inspections and just
disable custom avatars from awi owned worlds so no children kill their siblings and rob a bank after seeing a boob. They just don't have the time to inspect hundreds, thousands of avs. An easier idea would to set up some sort of community group like the PK's, free labour inspecting new avs. I'm sure there are plenty of busy bodies out there that would love to sit there judging every av to protect children and not correctly folling the rules and rejecting any av who's clothes they judge not lady-like or of the wrong religion or race or didn't like the way that av looked at them. Over all, will be fun to see how they handle it. [View Quote] aura lilyAug 10, 2005, 4:45pm
This type avatar would require ingame policing. Incidents of inappropriate
av's in pubilc areas for example would be a violation of terms of service. CT or world owner would have control over ejecting most violators. But a real channel for reportng the offender and subsequently having them banned for this would be needed for this to work well. GK and PK could do a lot of the policing and if given authority to ban could resolve stuff quickly, quietly, permantly if required. Although some ingame presence by Aw, Inc. would be needed. Email would not be a solution .. email reporting terms of service violation as this would likely go in the "maybe we will read it maybe not" bin, (as is typical or so it seems). Other vr chats similar to aw do this routinely without alot of strain. strike rapierAug 10, 2005, 4:48pm
Hmm lets see, PKs (and especially GKs) policing avatars...
Lets not, shall we. -- - Mark Randall http://zetech.swehli.com [View Quote] aura lilyAug 10, 2005, 5:04pm
Policing inappropriate avatars in public places. Perfect application of PK
or GK. strike rapierAug 10, 2005, 5:09pm
AWI would screen them before uploading them; as they must be placed on a web
server that AWI controls, not just any old place. -- - Mark Randall http://zetech.swehli.com [View Quote] c pAug 10, 2005, 6:56pm
Quite frankly that sucks...
If im getting a feature i dont want to pay to have it rated. I say that you let the person have an avatar... wow...they make a 300 foot penis...big deal...i can goto awgz and say many foul things and post links to pictures of a 300 foot penis...errr you get the point an avatar is no different, person breaks the rule they get ejected and reported... no new systems are needed...you just take care of it as it already has been... there is no reason to do anything else... there is no difference between a picture and a url...adn heck if a person doesnt want to see personal avatars or have the chance to be exposed to this...then they can set the option to not see different avatars, or awi could make a new one that would disable personal avatars browser side... simple...and easy... strike rapierAug 10, 2005, 7:03pm
I imagine you pay for the hosting of it, as in addition to the world object
paths, there is a 'universe' object path for such things. -- - Mark Randall http://zetech.swehli.com [View Quote] ryanAug 10, 2005, 7:05pm
Here's an idea. Give the moderating power to the users. If someone has a
personal av you don't like, you can block the av just like you can mute someone who trash talks. Or, if you don't want to see custom avs at all, you can block that option too like anything else. Then we don't need a committee to screen avatars, as the entire AW community at large will become the screeners. Ryan [View Quote] sw chrisAug 10, 2005, 8:21pm
Didn't they try that experiment in Second Life? Look where it got them. A
"lady of the night" reputation. Chris [View Quote] ltbrentonAug 11, 2005, 9:12am
Nope, SL is quite clean actually, from what I've seen of it. They've got a
new grid for teens, as there were a few people getting busted for underage. And as a few "refugees" say, it's "only bad if you pay too much attention to [adult areas]" -=LtB=- [View Quote] |
