Overpriced.. How the heck? // CommunityjoshuatempestaJul 20, 2005, 1:03pm
Okay im a new citizen here at aw but I have went to other universes.. cnw..
etc.. And i dont understand why uniservers (just for the software no hosting) costs like 30k? I find that really really retarded seeming to the fact this is a 3d browser not a car. The dedicated server required to run something like this would cost enough. I truthfully think the server software should cost around 300 bucks at the most and maybe have a fee to activeworlds itself monthly or something. thats just my thoughts tart sugarJul 20, 2005, 1:23pm
Are you sure you're not confusing a 'universe' with a 'world within the
universe'? A universe, yes, starts at 30k. A world within the universe starts at a couple hundred. Are you thinking of buying a universe? Or a world? [View Quote] r i c h a r dJul 20, 2005, 3:39pm
Universes are at rip off prices to buy because AW Inc doesn't want anyone to
compete with them. Universes start at $9995 though a lower user limit you could get a special deal maybe. You do not have to be hosted by AW Inc which is a rip off they do allow universe owners to self host the uni, 30k seems a bit much even for AW's standards though, If well planned hosting can be alot cheaper. gnu32Jul 20, 2005, 3:55pm

Universes are over priced because AWI doesn't seem to have a problem selling
them for those prices =P Poseidon [View Quote] strike rapierJul 20, 2005, 6:31pm
Go look at similar server software, they usually start at about 10,000 per
processor. -- - Mark Randall http://zetech.swehli.com [View Quote] legionJul 20, 2005, 6:43pm
Why would a relatively new citizen buy a uniserver? I'd say new citizens
need a lot of time doing research and see how they feel about their experience in the Active Worlds universe or elsewhere before making a decision to buy a uniserver. In other word, it's better to take a tour to see what it is like and etc. :p Sincerely, King of the Universe :p [View Quote] gnu32Jul 20, 2005, 8:39pm

It's money for the LICENSE to use the AW Browser in your own business if you
wish. They let you use that license to create a business to get money off of their technology. Of course you would still need a regular business license, etc. for a business, but this license they sell is kind of like a business setup opportunity. All you would need to do is charge people to register and get a server and make some worlds and advertise a little and you got yourself a pretty easy way to make money. But if you don't want to make a business, yes I agree with you, the price is too much. Maybe AW should make 2 licenses, one for commercial and one non-commercial use. Just an idea. -Kenneth [View Quote] legionJul 21, 2005, 5:42pm
Good luck finding financial data on that since AWI no longer have to report
to SEC since it is no longer trading stocks. :( Sincerely, Legion [View Quote] legionJul 21, 2005, 5:47pm
That's interesting idea about non-commercial and commercial license but is
it feasible business-wise? There are many, many non-commercial world and universe owners besides those commercial ones so if they receives lower prices and if there is no additional purchases, Activeworlds Inc. will be in deep shit (translation: red ink) so that is a big issue, unfortunately. But it is possible that surveys could provide answers from many folks when asked if they would purchase an universe or world if the idea above is implemented and the price is lower for those non-commercial users. But the survey method is also questionable according to some people, especially in accuracy. But who knows. Sincerely, Legion [View Quote] |
