AW Mapper - approaching 1 year outdated (Community)
AW Mapper - approaching 1 year outdated // Communitysw comitJun 13, 2005, 7:16pm
Being late and busy is one thing, but...come on, a whole year outdated? >_<
Here's hoping for an update next month... Who's to blame - AWI for not supplying the propdumps, or the awmapper folks for not being persistent to get it? I think we need a new mapping organization, regardless :P What would be the idle replacement - Andras's mapping program reaching the visual quality of AW Mapper + a better way to obtain the propdumps. Like YASBB is pretty fast at surveying, but does it only use 1 bot to scan? Seems like you should be able to use more, by using multiple ppw for example. - Com themaskJun 13, 2005, 7:20pm

[again, keyboard... excuse me.]
awi is what i'd point to. aw itself is probally like gigs, so it'd take alot of power to push out a propdump out of itself. but they probally dont want to do that exactly. jermeJun 13, 2005, 10:00pm
I had been thinking about trying to come up with system such as this for
AWTeen (which could also be applied to AlphaWorld). If someone could come up with the software, I would be happy to host it and generate maps on my server. -Jeremy [View Quote] jermeJun 14, 2005, 3:00am
I already do that for awteen. :-)
I wouldn't mind doing it for AW, thought it would take a lot longer.... My problem is actually generating the maps. I could use Andras' mapper, but it wouldn't look anywhere as nice as the AW Map, or be as usable. The web interface to the map wouldn't be as hard to come up with. Just need some java script or a java applet. Generating the actual images is the problem I see.... -Jeremy [View Quote] gnu32Jun 14, 2005, 12:47pm
Looking at the AW Mapper, im a bit confused
The bot is able to perfectly show the models and textures, or a rough idea of how the objects look like And i am stuck with 2 conclusions, do they 1. Using macroing and the AW Browser, leave the aw browser running as the macrorer moves the browser posistion and records whats on the 3d window (Maybe a special client to turn off the ground object to see underground) or 2. Have a bot that downloads the objects and textures from the OP and specially renders it (If they have local OP access, otherwise would be unlogical to download each object and texture) I think conclusion 2 is the closest one.. They tell you how on the about page.
They are given the propdump, and it just scans through it generating an map based on it...each object is given a specific graphic to display. However it doesn't upload the actual .jpg image until somebody requests it. That's why mapper images don't update within AW automatically until somebody looks at it on the website. Funny how i look at AW Press release pages, but not the about pages on
the mapper >_< Cheers [View Quote] themaskJun 14, 2005, 6:51pm

i have 2 servers, i wonder if there would be a way to combine both
together to do the workload =] actually, there is, like half of the world here and half of the world there. heh bastillionJun 17, 2005, 1:31am
Just to make this thread active again, has anyone noticed that there isn't
one reply from anyone that is actually involved in this project? I find that a bit disturbing. If it's a matter of space being the biggest issue, and a way to transport the propdump, why the heck don't they (AWI) just plop down the lousy $150 it would cost for an external X Gigabyte drive? *sigh* Just my 2 cents (not paying anything more, since the price for Cits is already high enough!)
